Player Spotlight: Jon Kitna (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jon Kitna, QB, Detroit Lions

Player Page Link: Jon Kitna Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

4,000-yd passing seasons are gone with the departure of Martz. With a more conservative offense now in Detroit and with questions remaining about the o-line, expectations for Kitna must be tempered.

Pass Yds: 3200

Pass TDs: 18

Pass INTs: 17

Rush Yds: 50

Rush TDs: 1

Detroit is implementing a run first philosophy but Kitna will still be asked to lead the team, in much the same way as Garcia did last year, however Kitna is still surrounded by several top tier weapons in Roy and CJ2. If your league imposes anything more than -1 for interceptions, buyer beware as Kitna is notorious for forcing the pass into coverage.

3600 yards passing 16 TDs, 17 ints. 70 yards 1 td

they might run first, but with those WR's 'ol Captain Caveman is gonna have to air it out a bit.

3800 25 tds 17 ints.

Kitna will be a nice QB2 value imo.

Jon Kitna's going from being a mediocre qb who throws for a ridiculous amount of yards to a mediocre qb who doesn't throw for a ridiculous amount of yards.

Bye-week guy. Nothing more.

Kitna should have a nice Season this year. Tatum Bell and Kevin Smith are not going to carry that team. Wanting to run and being able to run are two different things and I expect to see Kitna throwing the ball quite a bit.

The Defense is still sub-par and if Detroit plans to win any games...it will need to look to Roy and CJ2 early and often.

I think Kitna improves the TD to turnover ratio this year. Teams won't be able to bring such a big rush everydown anymore.

Jon Kitna has passed a lot in the two previous seasons and completed 62.4% in 06 and 63.2% last year. He averaged 7.1 and 7.2 ypa. All these are solid numbers even though he was harassed more than almost any other NFL QB.

The Lions have stated that they will run more in 08, but with the rookie Kevin Smith and Tatum Bell leading the charge behind a suspect OL, several around here doubt their plan comes to fruition. Additionally, their defense is not that strong so they should be playing from behind as often as not.

I think that even the threat of a running attack may assist their protection of Kitna and he still has two excellent WRs and two more decent WRs to back them up. Kitna will surpass his ADP, which is currently QB18 and 122 overall. Personally, I would not hesitate to go into the season with him and Schaub as my two QBs.

Jon Kitna 333 comp in 520 attempts for 3640 yds 7.0 ypa 20 TDs 20 ints & 110 rush yds & 1 TD

Jon Kitna will not last the year as the starting quarterback. Although he is the best option to start the season, the Lions will not be in playoff contention after Thanksgiving and they need to find out about if Stanton can be a professional starting QB in this league. Kitna should be considered a backup QB on your fantasy teams to start the season off and for Survivor type leagues where you count on a QB to play the entire season, bump him down your QB list as I think it's a real risky pick to count on him to start the entire season for the Lions.

2300 yards, 12 Td's and 14 int's

The Lions basically suck. They can't run the ball, the offensive line is terrible. They can't play defense. The only thing left is to pass...alot. The past 2 seasons in Detroit, he's averaged over 4,100 Yards and just under 20 passing TDs. Roy should be healthy to start the year, Calvin has had a year to learn the offense and adjust to the pros, McDonald really broke out last year, and Furrey is fantastic as a 4, having a 1,000 yard season under his belt just 2 years back. I see no reason to drop his yardage totals significantly.

4073 Yards

17 TDs

22 Ints

Of course, these are assuming he plays all 16. He's old, they suck, they could try Stanton out before the season's over.
