Player Spotlight: Steven Jackson (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis Rams

Player Page Link: Steven Jackson Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Jackson is currently my #2 fantasy back and it is actually very close between him and LT. This guy has talent and opportunity. I really struggle to see why Peterson should be ranked ahead of him given the RBBC in Minn. Unless Jackson suffers another injury he should easily see more carries and receptions that Peterson and maybe the most of any RB in the NFL. Although St.L is not as good as Minn and doesn't have their Oline, Jackson still gets it done in a fantasy sense because he is so resourceful in the passing game and running game.

355 carries, 1530 yds, 12 TDs

60 receptions, 500 yds, 2 TDs

Steven Jackson is a phenomenal player but his team isn't. The Rams aren't as bad as they were last season but they aren't as good as they were in 2006. Unless the Rams offense and Marc Bulger in particular plays much better this season as opposed to last season I think he'll be somewhat of a disappointment in 2008. Most likely a top-10 rb. Top-5? I'm not so sure about.

I Project he'll Miss 2 to 4 games
Did you miss this in the OP:

Jackson is a tough player....likely to get picked very early, but it's tough to gauge how good the Rams offense will be this year.He seems like a lock for 18-20 carries per game, plus 3-5 catches. ypc has been consistent 4.1-4.4 in the past 3 years when he's carried the load. Projection:310 carries, 1,275 yards, 10 TDs45 catches, 315 yards, 1 TDTDs could be higher, but it depends in large part on performance of the overall offense.

I'm predicting better play by the o line, better play calling, and a healthier player:

300 carries 1290 yards 11 TDs

50 recs 400 yards 3 TDs

I'm not seeing that healthy player...he's already sitting out of OTA's because of groin issue. Smelling little Fred Taylor syndrome sneaking up on a player. Predicting another injury prone season, owners should be picking up Pittman like no other right now. 250 carries, 1001, 7 TD's.

The Rams were dead last in team rushing td's with 5. I know their line was in shambles last year but is there reason to believe it will improve substantially from last year? Their defense is horrible, their line is bad (at best) and they lost their #2 wr. I think a lot people will be disappointed if they take him in the top 3 this year....

Jackson is one of the few true workhorse RBs left in the NFL. He is featured on the ground, in the passing game, and in the red zone. Even last year, behind a pretty awful o-line and coming off of a torn groin ( ) he was dominant for stretches -- weeks 10 - 15 he had 20+ touches and 100 combined yards/week.

Jackson is 25 (in his prime) and I see no reason why he won't easily surpass 100 YFS/week, if/when healthy. The Rams also have nowhere to go but up on offense, and still have some talented players on that side of the ball.

325 carries for 1400 yards, 60 catches for 500 yards, 12 total TDs

Steven Jackson is one of my favorite candidates for top RB in 08, especially in ppr leagues. I think that he will have a truly outstanding year. I think that he will be featured a lot in the passing game and will be the key component in the Ram rushing attack. He is not likley to lose carries without injury and there aren't many RBs that you can say that about any more. I know that many are projecting injury and are leery of his groin problems already this spring, but I think that he will return to good health before the beginning of the season.

330 rushes for 1480 yards (4.48 ypc) and 65 catches for 520 yards (8.0 ypc) and 12 total TDs

The best combination of size/speed/attitude/receiving ability in the league. Not the perfect situation, but will get the ball a TON. Add in the contract year and...

320 carries 1400 yds 12 TD

65 rec 550 yds 2 TD

His end of the year run made a lot of fantasy football owners happy. You have to rank this guy top 3 in Rb's heading into this season unless you're a doom and goom guy and you could bring that kind of attitude down on anyone in this league as there is never a sure thing.

1500 yards rushing, 14 td's

45 recptions for 500 yards and 5 td's

Big big year.

Much improved and healthier O-Line, RB God as new OC, weapons at QB and WR and maybe a potent set of TE's. I see big things from him if he can stay healthy. Thats really the question isnt it? You know he'll get goal looks, is a force out of the backfield in pass catching and has proven when healthy to be of elite status.

315 carries @4.5 per 1417 yards 13 TD's 48 catches @7.7 369 yards 3 TD's I expect more but cant project it.

With a low (2 games out) 1260 yards 8 36 catches @7.7 277.2 and 2

That beings said, when was the last time a Saunders led back had stats as low as the "low". Portis x2 LJ and Priest and Faulk...........is SJ the next one?

As an SJAX owner last year, it will be VERY difficult to take SJAX (redraft) over ADP or Addai. Or Brady, Moss or Manning depending on scoring systems.

I haven't done projections yet, but I will be taking into consideration these things:

1. The offense is crumbling

2. Jackson seems to always be dinged

3. He's only finished high once in his FF career

Last year, he had injuries all along the offensive line, and Bulger missed time. The offense as a whole was down.

Still, in the 2nd half of the season, he appeared in all 8 games, carried the ball 160 times for 728 yards and 4 tds--caught 28 balls for 205 yards and a td

Extrapolate those over 16:

320 carries for 1456 Yards--4.6 ypc

8 Rushing TDS

56 Receptions

405 yards

2 Receiving tds

376 touches

1861 Total Yards

10 TDS

Take into account the injuries and what not, I'd expect the Tds to go even higher in a contract year for Jackson.

356 Rushes

1602 Rushing Yards

14 Rushing Tds

60 Receptions

468 Receiving yards

4 Receiving Tds

416 touches

2070 Total Yards

18 Total Tds

He'll push for the Title of Fantasy RB1 this year.

I agree. Top 10 yes but the players around him aren't what they use to be. The biggest problem that Jackson faces goes by the name of LINEHAN! I still don't know how this guy has kept his job. In order for Jackson to be successful he needs 20+ carries a game. If he can get that, along with 5 receptions a game he will have a great season. The problem is that Linehan would rather put the game in Bulgers hands rather than giving Jackson a shot to carry the team. I think Linehan and most of the fans in St. Louis believe Bulger is better then he really is. He's prone to mistakes and when you have a coach who would rather give Bulger the opportunity to win a game rather than Jackson, his hands are tied. Jackson has proven that he is a game breaker, I just wish his coach would give him more opportunities to make plays.Aside from the coach and QB they also need some help on the offensive line. In all I think if he stays healthy and gets his touches like he did 2 years ago, he COULD be top 3 at years end. Personally I would rank him #3 on my board with a projection of 1300 yds rushing, 12 tds; 40-50 receptions for 300-400yds, 5tds.

How about a little bump here.....curious to know how, if at all, Jackson's holdout is affecting your opinions on him?

Saunders in as OC isnt going to hurt him. I dont think the holdout will linger too long. The Rams need Sjax badly

Recall a post about a lil known stipulation in either contract or CBA about losing a year of eligibility if he held out inside 30 days of start of season, which would be Aug 8, which I think means he wouldn't be a FA at end of year.

Is this right?

Pretty sure this is right. There's also a SJax holdout thread (here) that covers this in more detail.

A little off topic, but who is his backup? I saw where FBG has Pittman, but I do not see that anywhere else.

S Jax is easily top 3 talent and plays in a weak conference. He also plays against the AFC east teams as well.

Only worries is his health, which you have to question giving his history. Make sure you get Pittman and you'll be fine.

Only player I'd draft b4 SJax is LT. AP has the skills, but his injury history and having CT worries me.
