Player Spotlight: Tony Scheffler (1 Viewer)

Is Jackson's blocking any good? This is critically important for a TE's value. If he can't block, then he's a "converted WR" in name only, and will either be a blocking liability or be a TE who the defense knows must be running a pass pattern, greatly reducing his value.
i just reviewed the drives during first half of the GB game, and this is what i saw:- lined up wide, run play- blocked Jenkins, run play- lined up wide, not near play- lined up tight, not near play- in motion, blocked kampman, run play- lined up tight, short route- lined up tight, blocked no one- lined up tight, short route (a little blocking downfield)- lined up in slot, opposite side of play- lined up in slot, run play- lined up tight, blocked popinga- lined up tight, nice cross route for a reception and first down- lined up tight, short route opposite side of play- lined up tight, blocked popinga- lined up in slot, blocked popinga- lined up tight, assisted in blocking kampman- lined up in slot, TD reception
How often did they run 2-TE sets?

from cbssportsline:News: The Olympian reports that TE Tony Scheffler is currently listed as the backup pass-catching TE in Denver behind Nate Jackson. "I'm not worried about it," Scheffler said. "I think I proved myself last year that I can make plays for this team and I think I'm going to be a big part of things."Analysis: Scheffler had a nice last two-thirds of the season in 2007, but that was after Jackson went down with an injury. Most people thought Scheffler had the inside track heading into this season, but he was slowed by a foot injury early in camp and now Fantasy owners will really have to worry about what kind of production they'll get out of him in 2008. He remains a No. 2 option, but you have to drop him down to very low end of that category with this latest news.
Nate Jackson ??a fracking SCRUB ??are you kidding me ??? :moneybag:

This started in training camp when Nate was listed ahead of TS. Many thought this would change in training camp, but it did not. Originally there were grumblings that TS was getting full of himself and that's why he was #3. Then Nate just kept outperforming him in camp. Throw in the fact that Scheffler has almost got the QB killed when he was in there "blocking" and you have a guy that is going to be the backup.

Shanahan has a policy that the best players will play, and right now he thinks it's Nate over Tony.

So would you advise trying to sell Scheffler? Hold? Acquire Jackson? Basically I'm asking how long term you think this situation is.

ok let'see

- Marshall is out 2/3 games

- Royal is a rookie

- Stokley is 30+ years old

- D Jax looks done

- Scheffler on the bench

who's goin to catch the ball ??

10, 3 were when they were backed up on their own GL.

Couple of things here to keep your spirits up:- This may just be a ploy to motivate Tatum Bell Tony Scheffler.

- There are a few weeks before the season opens for more movement on the depth charts.

- Nate Jackson is still on ST duty, which would be strange if he is truly going to hold on to the starting gig.

- Chances are you can still grab Nate Jackson if he winds up starting the season.

Well, it's a lot easier to comment this AFTER the thing happened...That' s not what I expected from a fantasy football "expert".TIA

I'm not blaming anyone. I read information, decide what to believe and discount, and than make my own decisions.Having said that, I don't remember anyone posting much besides that Scheffler being Culter's best friend and is in for a great season after such a strong second half last year.I can't imagine this will hold but now I can't trust Shanahan for TEs as well as RBs?

 I've been talking about this on the air for about 2 weeks now.Besides, most everyone in the Denver media felt that Scheffler would win the job in camp. Why the hate?

I certainly believe you, as I've listened to the audible on occasion and you're always willing to give informed opinions. However, if you strongly felt that Scheffler's job was in jeopardy, shouldn't you have mentioned something earlier in this thread? Did you mention it in the subscriber content somewhere? This is the kind of info we expect FBGs to provide us before a news blurb comes out.

Guys, lets not hit the panic button yet. I'm no homer, and I don't have any inside information to offer. What I do know is that I had been buying up all the scheffler stock I could scrounge in the last few days. I was not aware of this situation brewing. I still believe that Tony is the best option for the Broncos, that he will finish as a high top 10 TE and that he will outpreform his current ADP market valuation. Yes this news is worrisom, yes it would have been nice to have heard some of this news earlier from our on staff insiders. That being the case I think Shanny is up to his old tricks and trying to motivate Tony.

At any rate I will put in a call to Mike and calibrate him.

Are you suggesting that Cecil is just another pretty face in fantasy football?

I don't want to bury Cecil. I like the guy, I really do. But for a staffer to come in here and essentially say, "we knew this was going to happen" when there isn't a peep about Nate Jackson in Scheffler's subscriber spotlight, it's a bit disconcerting. If you mentioned it on the Audible, fine. But that's free content. Shouldn't the inside info go in the subscriber content?

Maybe there's nothing to worry about.. I'm just miffed at this as a 4-year subscriber. That's all.

I did not feel strongly that his job was in jeopardy(and I usually don't read Player Spotlight threads). As I stated previously, the Denver media felt that this was just a ploy to motivate Tony Scheffler. I thought like everyone else - once the season starts it has to be TS, right? When training camp closed is when suspicions were aroused. I just can't see Nate keeping this job for the entire season - especially with the early suspension of Marshall. But this is Shanahan we're talking about, so who knows what's going to happen.

dude, he's been talking this up on the inner circle forum for a month.

No one knew this was going to happen (or at least stay this way), no reason at all to be miffed. I was merely pinged by a forum member and alerted to this thread - I came here to give everyone a timeline of what happened.

This isn't Lammey's fault. Everyone & their brother thought Scheffler would be Denver's #1 receiving when the regular season started. He still might. Scheffler is an immensely talented player. Shanahan has said as much.

I compare this to Ronnie Brown sharing time with Jesse Chatman early last season. Everyone thought Cam Cameron was crazy. It definitely didn't make sense to us, but these guys (the HC) have their reasons. What you have to do is simply believe what you know. Disregard the fluff & pay attention to the real stuff. Sometimes it's a fine line.

I have a feeling this has something to do with Scheffler's foot injury in some way. Maybe not. Maybe Shanny simply wants to motivate him. Or maybe he sees a young player who could be the best TE in football & wants to remind him that he needs to stay grounded. Who knows. What I do know is Scheffler is known as a good kid & a hard worker who is one of the most talented young TEs in the NFL. I happen to believe he's the best young TE in FF & is in a perfect situation. Tony Scheffler will be a top-5 TE year-in & year-out, IMO.

I generally look at things from a dynasty perspective & my advice is try to use this info to acquire Scheffler at a discounted price. Use it to your advantage if you can. This will work itself out & it won't take long.

I think its asking an awful lot for a TE to post top 5 numbers when he's #3 on the depth chart! I have no choice but to keep him as I already signed him at a price for a top 10 TE - but now I have to actually draft another starter instead of a $1 backup - awful - I will never draft another Denver player again - too unpredictable.

You have a definite dissconnect between those that own Scheffler in a league already... and those that are simply talking football or have yet to draft.

What utter arrogance. I blame myself for not getting word on Scheffler's 'big head' earlier than this. Memo to Scheff: Stay humble, you won't out-do Shanahan in the ego department, kid.

How things looked in Week 1...

Nate Jackson logs 3 targets. All three are very, very short dumpoffs in the right flat (two caught for 2 yds apiece, the third not caught).

Tony Scheffler logs 2 targets. One is a bomb that splits the defense, the other is a dart in the end zone.

Conclusions? Jackson is playing a role in the offense, but he's not playing the role of the receiving threat at TE. Regardless of what number is next to his name on the depth chart, Scheffler seems to be playing just the role we envisioned for him- that of the receiving threat at TE. Also, even more heartening, one thing prevents Scheffler from just being a glorified Jeb Putzier- Putzier held no value because he was pulled in the red zone. Scheffler was NOT pulled in the red zone, continuing a trend dating back to his rookie year- the majority of his career TDs have actually been red zone scores.

It's one week, and a sample size of 5 passes, but I'm going to wait to see a bit more before scaling back my projection any.
