There are many great players in this league, but I say it's a coaches league. It's why we see the same coaches year after year vying for the hardware. Yes, it's the first time for Tony and Lovie, but they've been working their way there for a long time.
Look at a great player like Favre. Since Holmgren left, he hasn't sniffed postseason success. Holmgren on the other hand has built another team and taken them almost there. Parcells has taken two teams there, and gotten Dallas to the playoffs twice. Coughlin can't get over the top, but they're in every year. Schotty is a great regular season coach. Cowher is gone, but a great coach and the Steelers were always there. BB has the Pats right there most years. When Jimmy Johnson was there, he did it with the Cowboys and then Miami. Look at what Mangini did w/ the Jets. Payton with the Saints. Can't leave Billick out. He's always right there too. Shanahan and Gruden too.
And then you look at teams like the Cardinals and Lions that have an abundance of talent, but can't win except for when it doesn't matter.
I'm just a believer that, relatively speaking, talentwise the teams are pretty equal in todays game. The draft guarantees it. You can slightly seperate yourselves with free agency. What sets them apart, in the long run, is the coaching staffs, and how they manipulate, structure, motivate and organize that talent into a cohesive unit.
In the 80's it was NFC dominance behind Gibbs, Walsh, Parcells, and Johnson. Now it's been the AFC led by Belichick and Shanahan. To me, it's all about the coaches.
Should they implement a coach draft and rules around coaching staffs?
