Players league/coaches league (1 Viewer)

There are many great players in this league, but I say it's a coaches league. It's why we see the same coaches year after year vying for the hardware. Yes, it's the first time for Tony and Lovie, but they've been working their way there for a long time.

Look at a great player like Favre. Since Holmgren left, he hasn't sniffed postseason success. Holmgren on the other hand has built another team and taken them almost there. Parcells has taken two teams there, and gotten Dallas to the playoffs twice. Coughlin can't get over the top, but they're in every year. Schotty is a great regular season coach. Cowher is gone, but a great coach and the Steelers were always there. BB has the Pats right there most years. When Jimmy Johnson was there, he did it with the Cowboys and then Miami. Look at what Mangini did w/ the Jets. Payton with the Saints. Can't leave Billick out. He's always right there too. Shanahan and Gruden too.

And then you look at teams like the Cardinals and Lions that have an abundance of talent, but can't win except for when it doesn't matter.

I'm just a believer that, relatively speaking, talentwise the teams are pretty equal in todays game. The draft guarantees it. You can slightly seperate yourselves with free agency. What sets them apart, in the long run, is the coaching staffs, and how they manipulate, structure, motivate and organize that talent into a cohesive unit.

In the 80's it was NFC dominance behind Gibbs, Walsh, Parcells, and Johnson. Now it's been the AFC led by Belichick and Shanahan. To me, it's all about the coaches.

Should they implement a coach draft and rules around coaching staffs?

Your giving too many coaches way too much credit. Dallas is 0-2 in the playoffs under Parcells. Shotty never won anything, with his awesome 5-12 playoff record. Coughlin coached in one conference championship and thats about it. What did Jimmy do with Miami? I dont remember any recent SB memories down there. Mangini/Payton had one good year. What has Shannahan done since the retirement of Elway (which was like 5 years ago)? How's Gruden done since he won the SB with Dungy's team? Has he even MADE the playoffs since the SB? Or even had a winning season?

Favre has done better than 'never sniffed postseason success'. Has he won the big one? No, but dont act like he'e never been in the playoffs or won a game. It took Holmgren what, 4-5 years to win his first playoff game in Seattle, AFTER getting stripped if his GM title?

Was Bill Callahan a great coach too? Was Barry Switzer a great coach because he took Jimmy's team to a SB win?

I'm not saying you dont need great coaches, because you do. But all great coaches have great players. They make each other. Holmgrem wasnt winning the SB with Don Majkowski, i can guarentee you that. Favre had the talent, and Holmgren got it out of him. Its a 50/50 thing, really. There isnt a single coach listed that would have won anything with this years Oakland team. Would Payton been in the conference championship game with Aaron Brooks? Dont forget, they had a last place schedule, thanks to thier 3-13 last year.

I think theres alot of rehiring of coaches because owners are afraid of unknown commodities. You see a hiring like McCarthy in GB and everyone starts criticizing Harlan because he was never a head coach before. Like I said, its 50/50, give and take. Good coaches need good players and good players need good coaches to have success.
