I'm not sure how Jackson or Maclin are similar to Welker other than not being over 6-2 and 220 pounds. What is the Welker role anyway? Slot guy? Possesion WR who can get 100 catches? Other than size, are any of these guys similar to Welker?Of the guys listed I supoose the closest prospect to a Welker like role is McCluster, but his ceiling is pretty much Welker's floor.

the most obvious for me is:Davone Bess

 Seems like every team (thinks it) has one these days.

On the Rams, Danny Amendola under the white receiver provision.

The things to me that define Wes Welker are he is tough, great hands, quick not fast, very smart (Knows how to find the open field), and he is clutch.

Of the list provided only Stokley has ever really shown all those same qualities although I think the best WW impersonator now is Julian Edelman followed by Davone Bess.

I just can't give any rookie that much credit yet, although in my opinion Armanti Edwards has a great chance to be a similar player.

Welker has uncanny awareness on the field that enables him to wreak havoc after the catch. He has great hands, runs with purpose for his size, and understands the angles on the football field. There are many players that match his size and maybe his quickness, but I believe it is his understanding of the game that sets him apart.

My thoughts exactly. Assuming that's what he means, Bess, Smith Jr. and McCluster do seem the most similar. DeSean Jackson could play Welker's role but he offers more big play ability. Don't be surprised if Andre Roberts fills a similar role.

Jackson would get smoked if he took a quarter of the hits Wes takes and bounces up from.... to me Wes is in a class all by himself; atleast before the injury. Smith NYG is a close second and is just as tough.

Already stated but Steve Smith NYG.

A true possession guy that will lead his team in receptions every year while playing beside other more capable deep threats. He will make the odd big play down field ala Welker but that is not their main roles. They are trusted by their QB's and are able to read defenses and be where they are supposed to be and have great hands and pass catching ability.

There's only one.Wes Welker
There sure is. If they had to replace him, it'd take a long time to find someone else that can work the underneath, and average 10 yards a catch. You know, someone other than the 7th round pick from Kent State that did it last year.

If you want a joke answer, I'd say every white receiver who lacks sub 4.5 speed. You'll see guys like Shipley and Collie compared to Welker even though they have very little in common from a physique/skill set standpoint. It's the new lazy comparison trend, sort of like how every 6'2"+ white receiver was compared to Ed McCaffrey for years.

If you want a serious answer, the easy choice for me would be Davone Bess. He's very similar to Welker in almost every regard. Like Welker, Bess put up big stats as a collegiate playing in a friendly passing attack. Both went undrafted despite their successful college careers because they lacked prototypical size and speed. Both are short, squatty possession receivers who excel in the short passing game because their initial quickness and agility allows them to separate out of routes. They're also built almost exactly the same. If you look at what Bess is doing in Miami, his stats mirror Welker's days as a Dolphin pretty closely. I think they're similar talents and the difference in their production is mainly due to situational factors.

Eddie Royal isn't built as thick as either player, but he's a lot faster. I would say he's more of a Santonio Holmes/Derrick Mason.

Despite Royal's speed, he has never been used in a role similar to Holmes. His rookie year, almost all of his receptions were of the short underneath variety - he was never used as a vertical threat. So, he was used in much the same way as Welker is used, and he excelled in that role. And last year, well, we all know how last year went for him. I do think that he can be more than a possession WR, but to date he hasn't been utilized that way.

Wow, what a complete ridiculous and absurd thread.
In what way?
In the same way as asking who is like Donavan McNabb or Vince Young? To ignore the racial bias behind the "gym rat" image that Wes Welker has is ignoring the way that black and white athletes are portrayed. Anyone compared to Welker is going to be a speedy white guy. Black stud WRs are called athletic and gifted, and white stud athletes are tough and scrappy.

I disagree. It only becomes a race issue if you choose to make it one.

The most shocking part, to me, is that people are actually taking the topic seriously. I just figured it was an easy joke thread, and got a good chuckle out of it.

All the OP asked for was players that are similar to Wes Welker. Not specifically WR's or slot Recievers. If a player is white they are most definitely similar to Wes Welker. In fact I think Wes and Patrick Kerney look a lot alike.

This guy gets it.
I actually thought it was a good thread. The NFL, as we know, is a copycat league. Teams see the huge success that Welker had with the Patriots and want a guy like that who can move the chains and help the team score points. i think it makes sense to try to identify guys that fit that role as they can be huge fantasy point scorers for you. My vote is Edelman, which is meant to be a joke. I'm not completely humorless.

Randy Moss's TD celebration where he spreads his arms out like he's ripping something open (or "splitting the defense") is actually a vulgar inside joke between he and Welker. I'm not kidding.
