The Florida Times-Union reports the Jaguars expect to receive notification from the league soon that DT Marcus Stroud will be suspended four games for violating the NFL's steroids and related substances policy, the Times-Union has learned from sources, who requested anonymity because of the hefty fines the league could impose for disclosing information relating to its drug policy. Stroud's positive test came from "taking some supplements," according to a league source. His 'A' sample came back positive last week, and per the drug policy, Stroud exercised the right to have his 'B' sample tested on Monday. According to a league source, Stroud is not likely to appeal the suspension. An appeal might allow Stroud to play in the club's next few games. But if Stroud were to lose the appeal, he could be out of action for several key late-season games.

How come I feel it is not as bad to be using steroids as it is for say cocaine or weed. Should the punishment be the same. Let me know your thoughts because I may be way off base.

I think they should be punished equally. You can go down many different roads with what is worse, but Im sure its best/simplest for the league to lump them under the same umbrella. But personally, and not that Im at all condoning steroid use, Id rather see a player on my favorite team get busted for steroids rather than pot, cocaine or some other recreational drugs. I would think cocaine or dope are more of a potential problem/addiction. And I sometimes wonder when I here about suspected 'suppliments' that players take if any of that stuff is being misidentified. If he doesnt come right out and admit use, its always tough to label the guy because we simply dont know. So, Id be inclined to take Stroud at his word, even though Im sure he'll have to do the 4 games.

Just my :shrug: but I'd think the suspensions would be a combination of the criminal justice system with how the use impacts the game.

Cocaine/crack/meth = big time suspensions, fines, etc.

Steroids = a little smaller

weed = small. Not to say "who cares?", but weed isn't giving an unfair advantage to that player, and it isn't that bad a drug.

The NFl has a list of supplement that are guaranteed not to contain any banned substances. Many guys getting caught use unendorsed supplements that may contain banned substances not on the label or traces from the processing machinery etc... That's the reasoning that Merriman gave and I'm sure a few of the others that have been caught, though there's no way to know if that's true. Some have actually admitted it, like Shaun Springs. And although I can't stand him you at least have to give him credit for fessing up.As for which is worse, well this is a game so anything that enhances your performance, like steroids has to be treated as worse and therefore punished more harshly. Recreational drug use is illegal and falls under the personal conduct policy. I know you can argue that coke or meth can give you an advantage but not unless you have a way of doing it all through the game. And no more than any legal energy booster drinks. I am severely against pot being illegal in the first place so I don't think that's worse than anything, although I agree with the stipulation that players ought not smoke it while employed by the NFL. For one, it is sadly illegal and two, smoking anything is in effect negatively affecting your performance for it's negative effect on the lungs so I can see why owners would want it banned. While I see nothing wrong with it, it can actually hurt performance. And if I was getting paid like they are I'd have no problem putting down the pipe.

I think you are exactly backwards on that. Steroids are illegal. So is weed and coke. But steroids are performance enhancing drugs. They are the drug of cheaters. Cheaters should be dealt with more harshly in my opinion.

agreed, Roids help the player perform on the field. Weed and coke, not so much.

Slippery slope, but it's up to the league to decide. Caffeine is also a "performance enhancing drug".

But caffeine is not illegal. Not that hard to grasp IMO, if you get caught with performance enchancers, you are suspended immediately. Caught with street drugs, first time you are in the program, 2nd time suspended

I doubt if the league moves to that. They've been concerned about the image of the leauge. I doubt if giving a free pass to illegal drug users will help that cause any.Also, I know using caffeine was a stretch, I'm just saying that it's a performance enhancer also. I don't think steroids is illegal because it enhances performance. That's where I think it becomes cloudy. It's illegal I guess for safety reasons. The same reasons that cocaine and weed are illegal (that's what they say anyhow). So, while I don't think steroids and caffeine are in the same ball park, if you are just looking at getting rid of performance enhancers, where do you draw the line?

????, this is already policy, first offense for street drugs = no suspension just frequent testing. First offense for roids = 4 games off.
