Playing a kicker who is playing against your defense? (1 Viewer)

I know, I know...play whoever you think gives you the most points. Normally I would agree with that thinking, but when it comes to kickers (who are typically a complete toss-up), does your approach change? In most leagues, you lose points based on the points that that your defense gives up, so each time a kicker makes a field goal, you are losing points at the same time.

Let's look at tonight's game for instance...

If you happen to have Robbie Gould and the Dolphins defense, or Dan Carpenter and the Bears defense, would you just let them play, or would you try to find an alternate kicker (or less likely, defense)?

i'd avoid it if i could, but if you have a top end kicker and a top end d, this wouldnt be a reason to bench one. aka, i think you could do better than gould, but i'd stick with carpenter

I think you're over analyzing this. Play the kicker you think that will give you the most points.

It's not like your kicker is really stealing points from your D. Your D is going to score the same whether you play or bench your kicker.

WHAT?

I am not sure what's more surprising...the original question, or that there was a legitimate response.

Your DEF does not know or care who you are playing at Kicker.

These 'double points for my QB and WR' or 'if he starts the QB I'll start the TE from the same team and THAT'LL show 'em' questions....STOP THE INSANITY.

You take the kicker that will give you the most points! I shake my head when I see these threads. Kicker A scoring 10 points against your defense, is more valuable to you than kicker B scoring 8 points against someone else.

Yeah, my first instinct was to post a faceplam picture but I'm in a good mood tonight.

I understand the point that you guys are making, and I agree with all positions except kicker. Kickers are so random, I think that it's at least worth considering using a kicker that isn't playing against your defense. Looking at tonight, for instance...

If you started the Chicago Bears defense and Dan Carpenter, you got great points for the Bears, but Carpenter was shut out. If you would have started a kicker that wasn't playing your defense, youwould have had a better opportunity for points. As the game went on, even if Carpenter kicked a field goal, it would have simply taken points away from your defense, evening things out. Diversifying that aspect of your game doesn't seem like a bad move to me.

Again, I understand the whole "start who you think will score the most points" argument, but when it comes to kickers, I've yet to find someone who can reasonably forecast their performance.
