Playoffs: losing the turnover battle (1 Viewer)

Indians Fever
The Seahawks made a little history this weekend.

The Seahawks this wekeend lost the turnover battle (3-1) but still won (by 10 points, 20-10 over the Redskins). As far back as the records I have go (1994) NO team has lost the turnover battle by more than one and still won the game by two or more scores.

All instances since 1994 where a club won a playoff game without holding an edge in turnovers:

2004:

Steelers 20, Jets 17 (OT) - The Jets held a 3-1 edge in this game. The Steelers went on to lose in the next round in the AFC title game 41-27 to the eventual champs the Patriots.

2003:

Titans 20, Ravens 17 - The Ravens held a 3-2 edge. All 5 turnovers were interceptions (3 by McNair, 2 by A. Wright). The Titans went on to lose to the eventual champs the Patriots in the next round 17-14.

2002:

Titans 34, Steelers 31 (OT) - The Steelers held a 4-1 edge. McNair threw 2 INTs and the Titans lost two fumbles. Maddox threw 1 INT. Titans would lose in the next round in the AFC title game to the Raiders 41-24.

Steelers 36, Browns 33 - The Browns held a 2-1 edge. Maddox threw 2 INTs and the Steelers lost 1 fumble. Browns QB Kelly Holcomb threw 1 INT. The Steelers went on to lose their next game - that game listed just before this one.

49ers 39, Giants 38 - The Giants held a 2-1 edge. Both Garcia and Kerry Collins threw 1 INT. The 49ers lost 1 fumble. The 49ers went on to lose in the next round to the eventual champs the Buccaneers.

2001:

Patriots 16, Raiders 13 (OT) - The "tuck" game. The Raiders held a 1-0 edge. The only turnover was 1 Brady INT. The Patriots went on to win the super bowl.

2000:

Dolphins 23, Colts 17 (OT) - The Colts held a 3-0 edge. Dolphins' QB Jay Fielder threw 3 INTs. The Dolphins got blanked in the next round by the Raiders 27-0.

1999:

Rams 11, Buccaneers 6 - The Buccaneers held a 3-2 edge. NFC title game. 3 INTs by Kurt Warner and 2 by Shawn King. Rams of course won the super bowl.

Titans 19, Colts 16 - Colts held a 1-0 edge. The Titans lost 1 fumble. Titans would advance all the way to the super bowl, where they would lose to the Rams.

1997:

Broncos 14, Chiefs 10 - Chiefs held a 2-0 edge. Broncos lost 2 fumbles. Broncos went on to beat the Steelers for the AFC title and then the Packers to win the super bowl.

Packers 21, Buccaneers 7 - Buccaneers held a 2-1 edge. Both Favre and Bucs' QB Trent Dilfer threw 2 INTs. The Packers lost 1 fumble. Packers went on to beat the 49ers for the NFC title before losing to the Broncos in the super bowl.

Vikings 23, Giants 22 - Giants held a 3-2 edge. Vikings' QB Randall Cunningham threw 1 INT. Both clubs lost 2 fumbles. Vikings lost in the next round to the 49ers.

Buccaneers 20, Lions 10 - Lions held the edge 2-1. Both Lions' QB Scott Mitchell and Bucs' QB Trent Dilfer threw 1 INT. Buccaneers also lost a fumble. Buccaneers went on to lose to the Packers as mentioned above.

1996:

Steelers 42, Colts 14 - Colts held a 3-2 edge. Steelers' QB Mike Tomczak threw 2 INTs. Colts' QB Jim Harbaugh threw 1. Both clubs lost 1 fumble. Steelers lost in the next round to the Patriots 28-3.

1995:

Steelers 20, Colts 16 - Colts held a 1-0 edge. AFC title game. Steelers' QB Neil O'Donnell threw 1 INT. Steelers went on to lose to the Cowboys in the super bowl.

1994:

Cowboys 35, Packers 9 - Packers held a 2-1 edge. Both Favre and Aikman threw 1 INT. Cowboys also lost 1 fumble. Cowboys lost their next game to the eventual champs the 49ers.

Chargers 22, Dolphins 21 - Dolphins held a 3-0 edge. Chargers' QB Stan Humphries threw 2 INTs and the Chargers lost 1 fumble. Chargers went on to beat the Steelers for the AFC title before losing to the 49ers in the super bowl.

Yes, the redskin O is THAT bad. ;)Cool stat. Every turnover is worth around 4 pts, so...all the more impressive showing w/o Alexander.

That fumble ended up helping the Chargers. They were down 21-6 and driving for a score. The fumble hit the pylon so Miami took over at their own one. The Chargers tackled the Miami RB on the next play for a safety, and then scored a TD on the drive resulting from the free kick. So it was in effect a 9-point play and the safety provided the margin of victory.

BGP what is the statistical probability of Cowher's 6 seed beating a rested 1 seed on the road despite being -2 in the turnover department?

Don't forgot the disadvantage Pittsburgh has with Rothlisberger at QB.
