With Mt. St. Helens just down the road, how about the Portland Volcanos?
I agree -- it makes a lot of sense of pick a name having to do with volcanos. Portland VolcanosPortland CindersPortland MagmaPortland LavaIt also lends itself to "hellish" nicknamesPortland InfernoPortland HadesPortland Orcus -- could have double connotation as Roman ruler of the Underworld + "Orca" or killer whale as a seaside city.Portland StyxPortland Cerberus -- guard dog or Hades but in this case also "sea dog"?Of course if you want to just delve into Greek mythology, the obvious choice for the patron god of Portland would make a good nickname:Portland PoseidonIts got everything. God of the sea. God of earthquakes (per the volcanic region). Even god of horses as per their want to name themselves stallions or stampede.

Another volcano, Mount Hood, is an iconic image in Portland as well. Easily seen from locations around the city.

I'm picturing uniforms of gray and red, with maybe an accent of yellow. Similar to the Ohio St. uniforms but maybe with gray being the predominant color.

OK, I've been studying this question non-stop for 36 hours, evaluated every possibility, sorted through all the many potentially great names I came up with, and have now narrowed it down to the one name that is the absolute, perfect, best:

The Portland Portlanders.

We could move the Raiders there and call them the Portland Hoods.

As an Oregon resident, I won't bash our biggest city. Though some of those are pretty funny. The Lumberjacks and Treehuggers/environmentalists would reflect about 50% of the population but would alienate the rest.

The volcanoes and other offshoots have to be the leaders as I think it would be important to have a connection to the area.

Some other ideas:

Chinook - though would have native american issues

Salmon - a state icon, but doesn't invoke fear much

Chinook salmon - The king of salmon species

King salmon - same

Kings - could be medieval and salmon

Steelhead - The most persistant of the salmonids

Rain - it would be accurate

Drizzle - even more accurate

Firs - as in fir trees, the ones loved by loggers and treehuggers alike
