The Secor lyrics contain a geographic impossibility: heading "west from the Cumberland Gap" to Johnson City, Tennessee "you'd have to go east."[13] As Secor explains: "I got some geographywrong, but I still sing it that way. I just wanted the word 'west' in there. 'West' has got more power than 'east.'"
Nah, as Dylan proved in one of the greatest songs ever written, Tangled Up in Blue. West is a cliche. Really an ironic artistic decision given he was stealing Dylan's music.

West is frontierism, East is societal, as any good songwriter will tell you.

Great, great song.  Old Crow version is excellent and the Rucker version is strong.   You have to be in the mood for country though.

I voted enough already, but I had the good fortune to catch Old Crow at Red Rocks. That was pretty epic actually.

The only good thing that came from Hootie’s bastardization of this song is he had to cut a fat ### check to the guys from OCMS.

I don't know if country music is the worst possible music, but it's pretty horribad
Two words: Johnny Cash.

If you can hear those two words and not think “well, not all country music I guess...” then you should be tied in a burlap sack and thrown in the Mississippi.
