Poorly Run Cities and Attributes They Have in Common (1 Viewer)

Let's try this again.

I'd like to have a discussion about poorly run cities/states and what makes them poorly run.

My opinion is that there is a correlation between poorly run cities (and states) and the Democratic party running them.

Need to define what is considered a poorly run city/state first.

Let’s say Republicans were voted into power in Baltimore or Detroit.  What would they do to fix the problems?

How many large cities have Republicans running them?

How many of these “poorly run” cities have you spent any time in?

Do you think the Democratic administrations in those cities are the cause of why they are poorly run? If so, what specifically is run poorly?

Aren't there are a lot of states under the constant yoke of Republican ideology in which quality of life issues are significantly lower than their Democratic counterparts?

Here's a listing of 150 American cities, ranked from best-run to worst-run.  The article details exactly how the measurements were made.  I went to the trouble of looking up the mayor of the 10 best and 10 worst cities to see what I could see.

After going through this exercise, about the only thing I can conclude is that cities tend to elect Democrats.

10 best

1 Nampa, ID (Mayor Debbie Kling, party affiliation unknown)

2 Boise, ID (Mayor Lauren McLean, Democrat)

3 Provo, UT (Mayor Michelle Kaufusi, Republican)

4 Las Cruces, NM (Mayor Ken Miyagishima, Democrat)

5 Durham, NC (Mayor Steve Schewel, Democrat)

6 Lexington-Fayette, KY (Mayor Linda Gorton, Democrat)

7 Missoula, MT (John Engen, Democrat)

8 Fort Wayne, IN  (Tom Henry, Mayor, Democrat)

9 Virginia Beach, VA (Bobby Dyer, Mayor, Republican)

10 Nashua, NH (Jim Donchess, party affiliation unknown)

10 worst

141 Flint, MI (Sheldon Neeley, Democrat)

142 Chicago, IL (Lori Lightfoot, Democrat)

143 Detroit, MI (MIke Duggan, Democrat)

144 Oakland, CA (Libby Schaaf, Democrat)

145 Hartford, CT (Luke Bronin, Democrat)

146 New York, NY (Bill de Blasio, Democrat)

147 Chattanooga, TN (Andy Berke, Democrat)

148 Gulfport, MS (Billy Hewes, Republican)

149 San Francisco, CA (London Breed, Democrat)

150 Washington, DC (Muriel Bowser, Democrat)

I’m sure Nampa Idaho is lovely and all but I’m taking DC and SF over it.

I mean it's probably that a city - especially a large one - is just really difficult to run well no matter who is in charge

As of August 2020, the partisan breakdown of the mayors of the 100 largest U.S. cities was 64 Democrats, 28 Republicans, three independents, and four nonpartisans.

Is it your opinion that the City of San Diego is an example of a well run City?
And the Republican mayor is pro choice, supports a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, supports same sex marriage, has called for civil rights act to include sexual orientation and gender identity, and is an advocate for having the city use 100% renewable energy within 15 years

one of the reasons we live in SD
Born and raised in SD.  Have lived here 40 of my 45 yrs.  It’s been both D and R in that time. I can tell no difference.  🤷🏻‍♂️
The sun still shines and the people are still great.

Great city.  No arguments here.  (Sans exorbitant state taxes)

SD is great. Lived in Encinitas in the 90’s for 6 years. Have been to SD prolly 5 times in past few years. Tons of homeless. Felt like it’s in a bit of a time warp. Not a bad thing just an observation. Typical problems of a bigger city.

Exactly. I moved here and will never leave, but I’ve never heard people talking about how well run the City is.  🤷‍♂️

I'm surprised this thread is allowed to exist

Tulsa is a republican city and has consistently had one of the highest violent crimes rates in the country.  let's talk about that.  Or how about Oklahoma City?  Or Omaha?  Or Bakersfield?  All terrible cesspool of cities that should be abandoned and left to rot (to use our president's words).

To the OP's credit, the initial post isn't nearly as blatantly argumentative as his initial thread that Joe shut down.

But even in this thread, the OP posted  a controversial opinion and then hasn't been back to support that opinion when questioned about it.

You son of a...

I lived there for several years in the aughts. Never heard anyone anywhere talk about local politics, except where it concerned the Chargers or Padres. When it's sunny and temperate and full of things to do and beautiful people... who really GAF? I would still live there but I wanted to buy a house and didn't want to spend half a mill for a dump in Santee.

On the flip side, here's the 10 best states to live in:

1. Massachusetts

2. Colorado

3. New Jersey

4. Hawaii

5. Connecticut

6. Minnesota

7. Maryland

8. New Hampshire

9. Washington

10. Virginia

10/10 of those states have been Democratic states since 2008 (and most far longer than that)

This is actually an eye opening discussion!
New Jersey :lmao:
