Bidet for the win!

Your quote reminded me to go look into the toilet I used at the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok this summer while on vacation. The most fantastic bathroom experience I've ever had. Heated seat, automatic flushing and seat open/close...and a nice warm bidet spray AND air dry. Toto NeoRest...The bad part is the dang thing costs almost $10K.

With that said - the self-induced panic buying is getting really old. Why is toilet paper the thing that everyone freaks out about anyway?

$10k for a toilet. LOL. Was it gold?

Not trying to start a political war cause I truly don't know the answer to this question, but has our president done or said anything at all about this? Either this or the Hurricane fallout?
I tried looking and found nothing

Haven’t seen anything from the President but Harris has shown support for the striking, union workers.

Only thing I've seen is he won't invoke the Taft–Hartley Act.

Hurricane is a different story.

Seems odd to support either side rather than simply supporting a resolution.
But whadoo-I-know

According to an industry consultant on Bloomberg TV, the resistance to automation includes some very basic stuff. E.g. automated parking gates and time stamp machines (currently done by hand by a human scheduler).

So even if the pay gets resolved, it seems the automation talks could get quite protracted.

I get why these guys would be opposed to automation. Better accuracy, more efficiency, less danger. Wait a second......!
When Rotterdam went to almost full automation, the dock workers were given massive buy outs. Sounds like a good plan to me, give them a bunch of money to learn another trade
No idea if this is accurate or not, but I read someplace the one of the impediments to this is that many of these jobs are basically hereditary. So a buy out means that you kid doesn't get this incredibly sweet gig.

Again, I don't know if that is true, but it does seem highly plausible based on the occupation.

But yeah, a buy-out would be reasonable IMO. (Edit: Also, these jobs aren't going to exist in another generation regardless. The union might be able to impede automation for a little while, but there's no stopping progress.)

Yes, jobs being passed down through families definitely occurs, on Oahu at least.

Good for them. They certainly picked a good time right before the election, the holidays and as AI is ramping up across many industries. As someone who’s been in new union negotiations and seen the garbage the lawyers tried to pull and remember what the benefits used to look like 20 years ago when I started vs what they are today, I’m always going to be for the workers.

For that price the water in the bowl better be potable.

For that price there better be a happy ending.
Fixed

Only one way to find out.

I wonder how long before robots replace people that are unionized? The jobs are mostly repetitive. Not always, but many are. And often can be done more accurately by machines. Whether it is a port crane operator, a plane door assembler, or a stewardess serving drinks ... all easily doable by robots. Heck, many white color jobs are too.

I have been slowly trying to get my organization to realise this. It’s not even on their radar. I’m telling them that that are 10 years late to the battle but they are oblivious to their impending crisis.

If you're for the workers then you should want them to ask for training on the newer technology that is positioned to replace their jobs rather than demanding more money for an already overpaid and antiquated position that currently only slow down our outdated ports.

You know what's fun about being over 50? You can see your organization making dumb decisions, and just not worry about it.

I know this is a little off-topic, but now that I have a pretty firm retirement date -- even if it's four years from now -- it really helps me chill out about long-run stuff like this. I won't be here anyway.

The Toilet Paper shortage will last longer than the strike.
There is no shortage.
The Upstate of SC would like a word
As would my local Costco.

Just so we're not splitting hairs - I fully recognize the strike did not cause the TP shortage. All the social media doomsday preppers did by telling everyone there would be a shortage, and thus driving everyone to buy pallets of TP unnecessarily.

Or you live in the backyard of the worst hurricane devastation since Katrina. I don't begrudge where our supplies are going (or at least I hope they are going) but the rest of you out there that are out, yea go find you some hoarders and kick them square in the *****.

I mean, TP is produced in the USA or imported from Canada. Nothing comes from the eastern ports so any shortage is not due to this strike, but rather due to blistering ignorance. So...checks out?
I blame this guy for the TP shortage

If I was still in HS I'd go on a "TP some houses" run. You know, cuz some people are going to need it.

There are also just a lot of folks taking supplies from the Charlotte area to Western NC right now as it is the easiest large metro to get to. I expect quite the influx of displaced folks locally.

I knew nothing about this until my wife said "They just reported on the news that due to dock strike there "may" be a shortage of toilet paper, paper towels and bottled water" This "maybe" puts people into a panic mode. So I was going shopping yesterday at Costco and when I pulled up every cart that was coming out the door was overflowed with paper products and they were totally out. This was at 1pm. It was crazy. Employee said they went through a 2 week supply in hours.

The news needs to be more cautious

Why would the news be more cautious? This is a win-win for them. The media spurs a panic, then gets to report on the panic and its aftermath.

I also have this attitude with AI affecting my work. I'm a writer (mostly marketing / sales), and have had a solid 20+ year run. I'm also 58. In my best GenX mannerism... "whatever".

The Sams Club nearest to me yesterday was completely 100% out of toilet paper and paper towels. One employee said they had to put a Limit 1 Per Person sign on it at lunchtime or it wouldn't have lasted til 1 pm. Just insane...

goes to show that regular people have no clue how this strike will effect them.
They're stockpiling a product that has nothing to do with containers from overseas not being unloaded.
