Before anyone jumps down my throat and tells me to do a search, I have already read the thread about rules every league should consider having (located here: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=272290). However, I am looking for even more. I have been the commissioner of my league for 12 years and although it is an awesome league and we all have fun, I feel like I could do more.

For example, last year, we had 7 regular season ties so this year I am instituting a decimal scoring system so that ties happen almost never. Ties were very frustrating last year and I can't believe I didn't think of a decimal scoring system sooner.

What other rules have you Commishes out there put into place to make your league better? I tried using the search but that did not return really what I was looking for. Id love to hear rules maybe on what you guys do with your add/drops, trade deadline, maybe rules that increase trades, etc.

Not the commish, but we have a 20 transaction max...HATE IT!!! 15 man roster: qb/3wr/2rb/te/flex(wr,rb,te)/def/k...so 8 starters + def/K which leaves only 5 bench players...tough to manage if you want to have a backup QB and replace def/k on byes or if they just suck...we already have a good waiver system, so i dont see the need to have a transaction max

I would hate this. I sometimes like my kicker a ton and would rather risk a 0 from him one week than drop anybody, for example.Our league does positive points for completions, and negative points for incompletions. As such, accuracy in QBs is rewarded. We're trying to figure out how efficiency can be added in also (with ease) because it makes a guy who throws a ton of short passes a bit overly valuable for our liking.

16 team IDP keep 3. Players kept in round selected the year previous. You can keep 2 IOPs and 1 IDP or vice versa. Start 1 QB, WR, RB, K, 3 Off-flex(RB,WR,TE), 4-5 IDPs for 12 total. Starting 3 DLs or 3 DBs takes away 1/3 opposing RB or WR points. Scoring is fairly balanced and teams will either try to be balanced on offense or use elite QBs and TEs to avoid getting points taken by opposing defenders. Defensively teams will load up on elite DBs or DLs to take away opponent points or just try to outscore people with stub LBs. 12 years in and going strong. This league has spawned a redraft of the same ilk and this year will startup a similar dynasty league.

Besides the obvious like auction over draft...

Addition of Punters. They are much more predictable than kickers if you stick with just yardage points (nothing for inside the 20). More punts = more points, so if you can predict bad offenses you can do pretty well predicting punters. Can also play weekly matchups, grabbing mediocre offense against a top defense.



Addition of Head Coach. You get points for an NFL win plus additional points for margin of victory. Again, if you can predict game outcomes you can predict this, so it lends itself to skill. Can go grab a Packers or Patriots early in the draft, or play weekly matchups with whoever is available on waivers.

Teams select draft position. Instead of just assigning the next year's draft order worst to first, we use that order in letting teams select their position. Based on past results, drafting 11th and 12th are in the top half of most desired spots. Though we do have some rules on our keeper compensation picks where teams may favor those spots as their first pick they use may be in an even round. But still, some people just like drafting at the turn and prefer it over an earlier pick.

Draft order for Bottom six based on combination of regular season results and playoffs. For a contract dynasty league, we combine both sets of results with a bigger weight towards regular season. Basically the bottom 6 teams get seeded in the consolation bracket. We have a point system towards draft order where you get your seed x 2 points. So the highest seed gets 2 points, the 6th seed gets 12 points. Then you get additional points for your order of finish in the bracket. Bracket winner gets 8 points, followed by 6, 4, 2, 1, and 0 points for the bracket loser. The worst regular season team can't pick worse than 4th, and the team that just missed the playoffs can't pick higher than... 3rd I think. I think it's a good compromise between giving teams something to play for in the consolation bracket, but still giving the poorest teams the best chance to pick early.

As commish, I want to make sure all the teams have something to play for. I have a 12 team league. The top 4 teams will compete in the playoffs. The middle 4 teams will compete in the "Cap Bowl", for extra blind bidding money the following season. The bottom 4 teams compete in the "Pick Bowl", for an extra first round rookie draft pick. Also, our league does competitive realignment every year to give each team an equal opportunity.

My league does something that I read about years ago, but haven't heard much about since. Every year, there is the owner who gets the unlucky fantasy schedule. You know, the guy whose team has the most "points against" average in the league. Even if that owner's team scores a ton of points, they might not have a great win-loss record because of who they played when. To reduce the effects of the fantasy schedule screwing a team over, we have something we call PPR (Performance Point Ranking).

Each week, the winning teams receive 5 PPR points, losing teams receive zero, and ties receive 2.5 points (we had our first tie last season since switching to a decimal scoring system about 7 years ago). This is an IDP league that starts 9 offensive players and 9 defensive players. So we also keep track of a weekly total team offense and total team defense. The #1 offense for the week gets 3 PPR points. The #2 and #3 offenses get 2.5 PPR points each. And so on until the #12 offense gets zero. The same points are awarded for the #1 through #12 defense. So, the maximum number of PPR points a team can get each week is 11 (5 for a win, 3 for the #1 offense, and 3 for the #1 defense).

When we first switched, some people were confused why their team was below another team in the standings even though they had a better record. The answer is because the other team's PPR total was higher than theirs. Soon enough, people figured it out, and now everyone is comfortable with it. It definitely smooths out the randomness. Yeah, you could go to a total points league and achieve the same thing, but I like keeping the head-to-head matchups in tact.

Basically the team with the Most Points Against gets a playoff berth as the 8th seed. Gives the guy getting screwed a chance to do something even if he's had the worst luck throughout the season.

I've been in a league where offensive linemen were split by OT, OG, OC and LBs and Safeties were also split by OLB, ILB, FS, and SS. That was not fun at all when those positions switched so much since a penalty was given if you didn't start the player at his designated position. So if you started your center at guard because your guard had a bye week or was injured would only get a fraction of his points.

The offer has to be a 20% increase in salary or an additional year on the contract. The original owner has the right to match the offer and move the player to his active roster. We have something similar. For every pt against you lose a pt. Defenses always score negative for us. The goal is to get a decent defense to limit your losses. Creates havoc during the draft as some defenses go off the board in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

we don't actually use this rule, but it's one I always wanted to implement -- award an nfl player, let's say, +1 point if his nfl team wins, or maybe deduct for a loss.

I think this would be cool just because it gives you another variable to consider when choosing players and line ups, and it gets you more involved in handicapping the actual games instead of just the players.

maybe monday night games would have a real rooting interest instead of just hoping some guy catches a ball.

We do this too, with our "defense" being defense + special teams. Our defenses get -1 for every point allowed to the opposing offense/special teams. Our defenses also get positive points for TDs, sacks, interceptions, fumble recoveries, etc.It makes having at least one good defense extremely important... and our draft reflects that. There are always a couple owners who carry 3 defenses on the roster throughout the year.We certainly like the extra dimension that this adds to our league.

10 team leagueRegular season is Week 1-17 top eight get in.No one plays during wildcard weekend.Rosters of the eliminated two team get put back these players back into the FA pool.We redraft from the avail FA's...first to worst.We repeat this after each week in the playoffs with losing teams rosters getting put back into the FA pool.We also reduce the amount of picks each team has during these re-drafts as the playoffs progress.So choosing the right players early is a VERY smart plan.I fully admit many people will roll their eyes or think this is stupid...heck I thought it was stupid when I first joined. UNTIL I played and drafted. In this leaague:Really rewards in season performance by getting to play the lowest seeded team and you have first pick in each round of the re-drafts.Player value is vastly different then regular leagues based on players chances of making the post season.I find it keeps owners active on the trade front. Week 17 is very important and with many NFL teams resting playoff players, it creates an interesting week for teams fighting for playoff seedings. The waiver wire is crazy this week.In general, to be succesful you have to find the balance of having playoff players and having players who score lots of points to help your standings.By no means is it perfect, but I find it a refreshing change from the same old same old.

I used to play in one league that had an excellent set of rules involving player contract values and rotisserie-style scoring. Here are key elements that made the league fun:

(1) Each player drafted would have a contract value, based on which round he was drafted. That contract value would increase each year, making the player more and more expensive to keep. Each team had a salary cap for all its players. What this all meant in practice was that the first couple rounds of each season's draft would focus on picking up stud vets that had been released because of their contracts got too expensive, and then later rounds would focus on developmental players. It really added a challenging twist to the league, since you were focused on balancing long term contact values against expected player performance. I absolutely love this contract setup, because it has the side effect of promoting tons of trading. People were much more willing to trade their stud players, because the value of those players was dropping each year because of the contracts. There also was lots of trading of future draft picks. Incredibly fun and active.

(2) Scoring was rotisserie-style, meaning that the points you scored each week depended on how your players did in comparison to other starters at the same position. This was hard for the commish to calculate scoring, but made it pretty challenging.

(3) 2 QBs. You start 2 QBs each week, and this means you really need to learn what's going on with all those mediocre QBs in the league that most people ignore in one-QB leagues. I really enjoyed this. I suppose you could accomplish the same thing at other positions by requiring more starters than normal (e.g., 3 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 2 D, 2 K). Sounds like a silly quirk in the rules, but it actually made the league a lot of fun to focus on those forgotten players of the NFL.

All-in-all this was a great league, rules-wise. Sadly, the commish situation was totally messed up. One commish allowed lots of unfair trades to benefit his brother in the league, and then basically disappeared with the money. So the other league members threw the old commish out and re-formed with a new commish who was primed to do an excellent job ... but then he died in a freak car wreck, which essentially destroyed the league.

A real shame all around. But still an excellent set of rules.

In some of the leagues I commish, we have a number of unique rules like:

Section 12 Common Rule Book - Replacement Owners Draft

When a team gets a new owner, they have the opportunity to remake their team through free agency and trades during his first week in the league. When there are multiple orphans, all of those players (and draft picks)from the orphaned teams go back into the FA pool so all of the new owners can redraft their teams. This sort of thing makes it much easier to fill orphaned teams if one team has Arian Foster & Megatron while the other is a real dud

Section 25/26 CRB - Division Realignment

Another form of parity while also pitting the very best teams against each other at least twice a season if your in the top division. Promotion and relegation division systems have been working for many years all over the world, especially in European soccer leagues. The key to this concept is that the new divisions are based on how the teams ranked last year. So in a 16 team, 4 division league, the top 4 teams go into Div 1, next 4 into Div 2 etc. This can also make for some unique division names......no one wants to be in the Lingerie Football League division.

Section 27 CRB - Taxi Squad acquisitions by rival teams

If you leave a player on your taxi squad, they can be taken by another team for a price. The team owner activating/signing DTS players from opposing franchises will pay the price of 2 draft picks to the franchise losing the DTS Player; 1 draft pick from the same round the player was drafted, 1 draft pick from the round higher than the player was drafted.

Example: The price for a DTS player drafted in the second round will be a 1st & 2nd round draft pick, player drafted in the 5th, the cost is a 4th and a 5th. As per the logic described in the above mentioned rule, it's not possible to acquire a player drafted in the 1st round via a DTS Activation Trade.

We have a strict list of items that need to be adhered to for the commish to approve the trade, otherwise its voided. The owner losing the player has no recourse (other than the picks given to him as compensation) unless the acquisition is declared invalid by the commish. I have no doubt some people will baulk at this rule as they like having a place to stash rookies but this rule still allows for that but also adds layers of additional strategy in how you might use the taxi squad.

Section 25/31 CRB - Potential Points used to determine draft order for Non Playoff teams

Non Playoff team final standings - For the determination of draft order, all non-playoff teams at year end, will be sorted according to "potential points" which is the total points that would have been scored if a team set the optimal lineup each week. The lowest total Potential Points (PP), will be awarded the first draft position, and so one, through all of the non-playoff teams. This rule has virtually wiped tanking from the map. The only way to tank is to pretty much destroy your team and have it filled with worthless players no one is willing to do that.

We do both VP and head to head in 1 of my leagues. The Head to Head (13 games W/L record) determines the 3 division winners and 3 playoff spots. The VP determine the 3 Wild Card teams.

Each team can get up to 11 VP per week (0-11) you get 1 VP for every team you outscore each week.

The 2 byes are based off VP not division winners or W/L record so if you have a bad luck year playing one of the top scoring teams every week you could go 6-7 and still get a bye if you are in the top 2 in VP.

Teams are seeded off VP 1-6.

Started this dynasty league in 1997 and used it every year and not 1 time has anyone complained about it. In fact it is what makes the league something special because no other leagues use this kind of rule. Everyone in the league would not have it any other way it gives the regular saeson real meaning.

I was in a league last year where the commish loved to see big scores, so he wanted 30 yard + touchdowns to be 9 points and 50 yard + touchdowns to be 10 points. We also had PPR, and a few other bonuses I don't remember. Anyways he put in the scoring wrong so if your player scored a touchdown over 50 yards not only did you get 10 points for the score, you also got 9 points for the score being over 30 yards plus 6 points for the touchdown, not to mention the yards. The league was sick, I had the most points in the league by almost 200 total points but finished at 7-6 and got the last spot in the playoffs, the team with the second most points didn't make the playoffs at 4-9.

I looked up the league and here are some highlights from my team

Week 1 - going into Monday night I was up 176 - 130 and he has Welker playing, Welker catches the 99 yard bomb and I lose 188 to 176. Welker has 8 catches 160 yards and 2 touchdowns = 58 points.

Week 2 - I pick up Henderson after Colston goes down and use him week 2, Vincent Jackson 10 catches 172 yards and 2 tds = 41 points Devery Henderson 3 catches 103 yards and 1 touchdown = 41 points

Week 9 - I score 208 points, Vincent Jackson has 7 catches for 141 yards and 3 tds = 41 points, Julio Jones has 3 catches 164 total yards (33 rushing) and 2 tds over 50 yards = 73 points

Week 13 - I go into Monday night down 148 - 79. I have Brees, Cruz, and Graham playing. They score a combined 134 points and I make the playoffs on this game. Brees 372 yards 4 tds 0int 1 rush 8 yards 1 td, Cruz, 9 catches 157 yards 2 td's, Graham 5 catches 84 yards 2 tds.

Obviously I don't play in this league anymore.

I think that can be a bit unfair, I am in a league where the higher rated seed gets a 5 point "home field" advantage and if you are the number 1 seed overall you get a 10 point advantage

The sleeper keeper rule

Each team may keep up to two players it drafted the previous year if those players were on that team’s roster for the whole year, never cut or traded and then reacquired, and drafted in the 10th round or later. To keep a player that qualifies for this the team must give up its fourth round draft pick for the upcoming draft if the player was drafted between the tenth and fourteenth round, and they must give up a 5th for a player that was drafted in the 15th round or later. You can keep two players drafted after the 15th, but one takes the 4th spot and one takes the 5th.

I really screwed up this year as I traded Gronkowski and could have kept him with a 5th (I traded him because my 1wr went down, hernandez was coming back and I was competing for a playoff bye.)

I lost in the first round of the playoffs and now I cant keep gronk with a 5th round pick.

Basically the team with the Most Points Against gets a playoff berth as the 8th seed. Gives the guy getting screwed a chance to do something even if he's had the worst luck throughout the season.

That is interesting. I have seen some pretty bad screw jobs for points against. One year, our total points leader was 6-7 because his points against were 20 more per game than his points for. Nobody wanted to see him in the playoffs.

would call this more scoring and lineup rulles, but this system we have been using for a few years now and it really creates a fun and interesting draft day.

we all decided on a 5th round reversal as well instead of 3rd.

following lineup is used:

start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D/ST, and 1 SUPER FLEX of any position you want including QB, TE, and D/ST.

scoring is 6 pts for all td's

1 PPR for RB and QB

1.5 PPR for WR

2 PPR for TE

.25 pt per carry

.04 per passing yards

.1 per rush/receive

5 pt bonus for 300 passing, 100 rushing, 100 receiving

10 pt for 400/200/200

15 pt for 500/300/300

again with the chance to start 2 qb's or have 2 te's getting 2 PPR, as well as everything else, tons of gameplans happen every year on draft day.

This may be the stupidest rule I've ever heard...LOL...... sorry but I had to say it....

Started this dynasty league in 1997 and used it every year and not 1 time has anyone complained about it. In fact it is what makes the league something special because no other leagues use this kind of rule. Everyone in the league would not have it any other way it gives the regular saeson real meaning.

Has there EVER been a team in the championship who didn't have home field advantage throughout the playoffs? Going up against an extra flex player is an almost insurmountable challenge. You might as well just put the division winners into the championship.

- 16 team total points league . . . draft and done. - 21 week season (Week 1 through the Super Bowl) - No weekly lineup submittals, trades, drops, waiver wire claims, or roster moves at all. Rosters lock after the draft ends. Once the draft is over, owners are done for the season. - ALL players on rosters will count each and every week. The team with the highest point total after the Super Bowl will be declard league champion. - Rosters will be comprised of 2 TEAM QB, 4 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE, 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE), 2 PK, 2 DEF - Scoring system outlined in League Scoring section but two important points are all TD = 6 points and RB = 0 PPR, WR = 1 PPR, and TE = 2 PPR.

Was thinking of doing something similar to this for my main league. Although I'd likely want to do it best ball each week for starting lineups. So your top scorers play. Little bit less radical then having everyone count if I'm trying to convince my league to adopt this format.

Mine is a 12-teamer. Was also thinking of making each week an "all-play" for the regular season. So if you have the top score for the week you go 11-0 for that week. 13-week regular season with top 4 teams making the playoffs. Our playoffs would be weeks 14-16 with top score for that 3-week period taking the title.

I like the aspect of being done when the draft is over as well as all the strategy best ball entails when drafting.
