Predict the Week 17 flex game! (2 Viewers)

Yeah Indy/Tennessee it is.

They've done the non-flex before?

Anyway I am sure that Cincy/Pitt and Baltimore/Cleveland will be at the same time now - presumably 1pm.  If Seattle hasn't clinched they'll probably put them and the team(s) that can knock them out all at 4

Seattle is playing Arizona. Has to be a 4 pm game. In addition to playoff-relevant games, all games involving AFC/NFC West teams have to be played at 4:00 unless KC is at home (which they are next week, but if they lose tonight and fail to clinch HFA it will be moved to 4)

How about this? Steelers lose, Colts win, they play Tenn next Sunday night. Earlier in the day, Steelers win, Ravens win to take the AFCN, and then Colts-Titans tie on SNFTenn definitely loses the tiebreaker based on conference record, but Pitt and Indy would have the same record, and beyond that I have no idea who wins.

Personally, I would love to see SNF ticking down to the end of OT and Steelers hanging out at Tomlin's house cheering for a tie.
According to ESPN, this scenario is still in play. If Steelers win and Colts-Titans ends in a tie, Steelers get the 6 seed.

Weird schedule.

10am games:  only NE and Houston have something to play for (2/7 games)

1pm games:  If NE wins (likely), KC would need to win, which means every game means something (8/8)

SNF: team that wins is in

KC needs to win regardless what happens with NE. The division and homefield throughout are on the line.

What's weird about that? They always try to put the games with the most at stake in the later slot. I'm guessing the only reason they have NE and Houston early is because those games mostly only affect each other. Yes, those results will impact KC and IND/TENN, but those games will have stakes regardless.

What the league wants to avoid is where a 4:00 team gets an advantage by knowing the 1:00 results. So let's say Team A loses at 1:00, eliminating themselves clinching a spot for Team B. Now Team B gets to rest their starters, which is unfair to Team C, who they'll be playing next week in the wildcard round.

That's a good question.  If NE wins, HOU wins, KC loses, LAC loses... all four are 11-5.
LAC can't win any tiebreakers with KC. So if both teams lose, KC wins the division. If it's a three-way tie with KC/LAC/NE, LAC is eliminated first and then NE gets top seed over KC because of head-to-head. If it's a four-way tie with Houston, then I'm not sure. NE would have the worst conference record, but they would also have beaten both KC and Houston, so I think they would win and I'm not sure who would get the second seed (would probably go to common opponents).

(Just checked the ESPN playoff machine; in that scenario Houston would get the 2, KC the 3 and LAC the 5.)

Thoughts for this year?

Seems like there are 3 candidates to me:

HOU-TEN: not sure if it can be a do or die game, but it's the only one with even a possibility on the surface.  Seems like if PIT, HOU and TEN are all 9-6, there's a chance, but I haven't looked at tiebreakers)

SEA-SF: obviously both clinched, but potentially fighting for a bye vs. wild card could be somewhat interesting

BAL-PIT: seems highly unlikely unless Lamar looks he will play.  Lamar vs. PIT fighting for a playoff chance?

It’s too early to tell. The driving factor has always been that the late game matters, regardless of what happens in the earlier games.  The NFL just won’t risk, for example, putting Pittsburgh-Baltimore in prime time if Pittsburgh could already have clinched a Wild Card via a Titans loss earlier in the day. Because then both teams are liable to rest starters and then you have an exhibition game instead of the play-in game they want.

That being said, it doesn’t look like any of those are shaping up. Beat the league is kicking itself that Philadelphia-Dallas is this week instead of next

So if the current situation holds, then it probably will be Seattle - SF. With the #1 seed and a bye on the line vs a road Wild Card game on a short week, you can beat both teams will play to win

Also, that allows the NFL to announce the Wild Card schedule during Sunday Night Football, just leaving a blank line on the bracket for the loser of the game
