Time to put this one to bed...

You have two choices in the poll. For the rest of your life, no matter the circumstance, you are stuck with the choice you make today, which one do you chose?

This poll assumes the cost is the same regardless of your choice.

78% pump-it-yourself....not turning out the way you had expected, huh?

I'm telling you...the NJ law is a pain. I hate waiting on people. Pumping your own gas isn't that bad if you've always done it.

I never have to wait for a gas pump. I'd probably have to go back years to before a hurricane for the last time I wasn't able to pull up, immediately get gas and leave.

Now if you're talking about an attendant fully dedicated to me so the gas gets pumped just as fast, and at no additional cost, then sure I'll take the attendant.

I grew up in NJ, and my mom still lives there. I try to fill up before I enter the state of NJ. Always have to wait for the attendant to start pumping and remove the pump.

i live in NY, work in NJ. I always fill up in NJ just cuz its much cheaper but if the prices were the same I would never fill up in NJ cuz the waiting ####in blows.

This is rather odd. I am extremely lucky in that I work five minutes away from Jersey. I need gas, I always get it in NJ. Why on earth would I want to do it myself. If the place is crowded, I go to one of the 1,000 that are right next to it. Even if I have to wait 5 minutes, who cares.

I'm forced to live with it but I don't like it. That said, I usually hit the same gas stations at off-peak hours and have mitigated the wait times. If a guy does extra stuff like clean the windshield, I'll throw him a buck or two.

I'm not sure where the "can't stand waiting" argument is coming from. I can't remember the last time pulling in and out of a gas station ever took me more than five minutes - and after this winter I'm sure glad that I got to stay in my heated car while I got the tank filled.

ETA: Also I generally fill up on my way to work - and I get in much earlier than I need to everyday anyway or on a Sunday morning where I'm not in any kind of a rush.

Not to mention that the times I've been waiting at a gas station, it's because the pumps are in use...it's not because I'm waiting for an attendant to either start or finish pumping. Mentioned this in the other thread, but I'd much prefer to find myself stuck waiting for an attendant who knows how the pumps and CC system works than god forbid find myself behind someone who has gone inside to pay cash and get a bag of chips, or can't get their card to swipe.

What's the NJ law on filling up gas cans? When I fill up my car, I also fill up 20 gallons into gas cans. (I get a discount from the grocery store to use at their gas station. There is no cap for the discount other than no more than 30 gallons. So, by the time my prius is done with all 30 gallons, I have more than enough for another 30 gallons of free gas.)

guy pumps it for you

If I know how to do something, I'd always rather do it myself.

I even hate having to use a travel agent at work. I'd rather book all my flights, hotels, car, etc myself so I get exactly what I want.

Pretty sure everyone prefers booking their own travel, this isn't really comparable...

Also, there are a tons of things I'd rather people do for me than do myself, just a few:

Masterbate

Vacuum

Iron

DIshes

Cook (depending on my mood)

pump my gas

carry my luggage

clean my car

annoying tasks at work

Just to name a few

Getting the "I'm a tough guy, I'd rather pump my own gas" vibe from the gas pumping crowd.

Just for the record, pumping your own gas doesn't make you any more of a man...

Wasn't trying to compare, just saying I have hangups with people doing things for me I can easily do.

The dude in the men's bathroom with the towels and cologne might be the most awkward thing I've ever experienced in my life.

The dude in the stall with the lotion is even more awkward.

I agree, I've covered this one before.

"Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food, I can drive a taxi, I can and do cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist. Because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones."

Pay the same price and have some idiot do it for me? Sign me up. Not getting rained on, not standing in the slush getting snowed on, let that poor guy do his thing.

You guys are all picturing the sunny day easy pumping and not the freezing your nuts off pumping.

Yeah but do you check your oil and clean your windshield?. Not to mention the kid pumping gas gets to look at a lot of female crotch when he is cleaning the windshield. Why would you deny him that.

Are you my Mother-in-Law? Are you named Carol? I swear I thought she was the only person who did this. She will get wind of any purchase the wife and I are about to make, and offer to "buy us" gift cards (aka. buy gift cards and then we mail her a check for the full amount) so she can then get the gas station points...at which point she fills up her car and every gas can she can to get to the gallon cap with the discount.

Seriously. She buys us Gift Cards. In Pittsburgh. She mails them to us...in New Jersey. So she can get gas points. And she gets very very angry if we say, "I can't wait 5 days to buy this. Sorry."

but you have probably done your own prostate exam, so there you go.

I don't check my own oil or clean my windshield...and in the 5 years I've lived in NJ, I've had the guy wash my windshield exactly 2 times. This corresponds to the only 2 times I've ever given the attendant any tip.

When I lived in VA and was allowed to pump my own gas, I washed my windshield with almost every fill-up because I was out of the car anyway. I've found that many stations in NJ have crappy squeegies because nobody ever even uses them. The fluid is brown and smells like...New Jersey (the bad parts).

I live in n.j. I don't understand this waiting thing. Maybe once a year I have to wait more than 30 seconds for the attendant to first come over or to take the pump out.

For all these types of polls for me it's time vs. what's my time worth. Cost equal and I have to be there anyway I'd prefer to do it myself. Unless the guy is standing there with pump handle in hand like a Nascar pit stop I'm going to be able to do it a lot quicker and save some of my time. If someone would fill up my car for me at my house in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping then sign me up.

Yeah. This seems pretty easy to me.

how much longer does this take? i actually voted to have it done for me, but i didn't think about the time factor.

According to some you have to wait hours. According to people that actually live through it, it may take a minute to two out of your life.

Time to put this one to bed...

is the wait time the same?

I'm impatient. I'll be the first to tell you that. I fully acknowledge that it's usually a max of 5 minutes of extra time...I also don't tolerate inefficiency very well. I have to drop my kid off at daycare. They open at 7 AM...my commute is an hour, and it gets really bad if I get going after dropping him off after 7:20 or so. When you have one guy running 8 pumps at a busy station that I have to stop at 2x/week, and that guy is usually jibbering in some foreign language to someone on his bluetooth, I'd much rather just get out and pump my own gas.

I'm calling extreme bull#### on waiting up to five minutes extra solely because of the amount of time it takes for the attendant to get to you at the beginning and end of the filling up process. Bull#### on that time having nothing to do with the actual act of filling up the tank, which you would be waiting for whether full or self service. Five minutes is a very long time in that context.

Apparently getting it pumped for you takes 20 minutes, but pumping it yourself takes negative 8 seconds.

I'm not going to say I've never had to wait (but even under the worse case scenario, 5 minutes would be max) - but generally by the time I put my car in park and pop the gas tank door open, they guy is at my window. Perhaps I wait 30 seconds after the click for the guy to bring the card and receipt over. So instead of standing outside while the gas is pumping into the car I get to listen to the radio and check texts or emails on the phone. On cold or rainy days, this is a no brainer.
