Punt and Kickoff Returners 2009 (2 Viewers)

Man!!! What is wrong with the Titans placing a healthy Alvin Pearman on the inactive list 2 games in a row?
It's a Fisher thing, he likes the return guys to contribute on offense. His bias against specialist led to the decision to cut Mark Jones in preseason, which is responsible for at least one loss (multiple lost KR fumbles v. the Jets). Suspect its the same thing with Pearman.Of course since I picked up Griffin, he gives the job to Kaesviharn.

Devin Thomas, WR, Washington, may be worth a pick-up, at least for this weeks game against the Saints. He has been involved in the passing game recently (2/37, 3/33, and 4/46 the last three weeks) and appears to be the main KR as well as long as Cartwright is starting at RB. He had four returns last week versus one for Quinton Ganther.

With Portis already declared out for this weeks game against New Orleans http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4701678, Thomas may see a lot of KR opportunities, and Washington will probably be in catch-up mode for a good chunk of the game.

From Rotoworld.

The Titans plan to use Kenny Britt on kick returns more going forward.

Boosting his value in return-yardage leagues. Britt will also likely finish out the year as a starting wide receiver because Justin Gage has broken bones in his back and probably won't be on the first-team offense when he returns.

Wow. He gets a huuge bump in our kind of leagues.

Any news on whether Fred Jackson will continue to do KRs even though he might be the starter in Buffalo? HUGE value if he does!

I'm really upset that I missed out on picking up Britt. And to make it worse, my opponent this week picked him up for a crucial game between two teams tied for 3rd place right now!

Bears FS Danieal Manning is expected to lose his starting job to Kevin Payne this week.

The injury-prone Payne surprisingly lost the job to Manning one week into the season. He's an upgrade against the run, though Manning is superior in pass coverage. Manning is expected to move into the nickel back role while seeing increased special teams duties.
LinkI think this means Manning less IDP stats, more KR's and Knox less KR's.

CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!

With Kolby Smith going on IR I am concerned that Jamal Charles may be pulled off kickoffs and no longer be a mega-stud in return leagues. Seems like a heavy workload with not many healthy backs on the roster. Any Chiefs homers that have heard anything?

Sun, Dec 6

Smith (knee) is active for Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Recommendation: He’ll be available for his regular special teams duties.

Rotowire was right. Clifton Smith started the game then got his second concussion on the first play of the game.

Clifton Smith's 2009 season ended Tuesday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed their Pro Bowl kick returner on injured reserve in the aftermath of his second concussion within a seven-week span.

Dang...well, time to pick up Sammie Stroughter

Devin Thomas is returning kicks as long as Clinton Portis is out and Rock Cartwright is starting.
From Rotoworld. I picked up Devin this week but if Rock is on ST again then it doesn't look so great any more.Rock Cartwright has asked to go back on special teams full time after getting his starting running back job stripped.Cartwright complained that he didn't get enough carries to get in a rythym, but the real issue is that he's not that good and is 30 years old. Quinton Ganther at least has a shred of upside at age 25. Neither one is the long-term answer for the Redskins and we're still expecting some kind of committee going forward.Source: Washington Times

I'd love to get clarification on the reply from coaching!

Any Stillers fans know why Logan didn't return kicks tonight? Wasn't inactive...big fat zero to start off the first week of the playoffs.

I saw the game. It was weird. The wind was blowing crazy and Mewelde Moore kept getting the kickoffs and Santonio Holmes kept returning punts. I think the ball wasn't getting to Logan. Then again, for some reason, he wasn't out there on some of the kickoffs. He only had 1 fair catch. My opponent had Logan...*shew* (sorry tho man. Hope you still win!)

Thanks, didn't catch the game, just double checked the inactive list (he has had a rib cartilage injury), figured I was good to go.Oh well, dems da brakes.

Yeah, I'm personally going to bench Devin Thomas this week. Sounds like Cartwright will go back to returning kicks, and Oakland doesn't offer up many returns with the lack of scoring and Janikowski's touchbacks.

*WR Devin Thomas, not RB Rock Cartwright, will field the first kickoff against Oakland on Sunday, Zorn said. Cartwright had hoped to return to being the No. 1 kickoff returner after losing his starting running back spot. Cartwright still could return a kickoff or two. [SOURCE OF INFORMATION]

great info...much appreciated!

I'd play Devin Thomas regardless because Oakland has been playing way better lately. They should get a few scores at home.

Bengals KR week 14?

Cosby or Caldwell? I would like to know since I own both...need to play one of them.
In addition to cleaning up the penalties (81 through 12 games), the club needs a solid performance on special teams. Quan Cosby is averaging 11.8 yards per punt return and is due to break one. With kickoff returner Scott sidelined with a painful sprained toe, wide receiver Andre Caldwell and Cosby will likely share kick return duties. If they don't hold onto the ball, the Bengals won't secure a victory. [SOURCE OF INFORMATION]

The most interesting situations I see out there right now:

San Francisco: Josh Morgan returning kicks and has 6 catches in back-to-back games.

Seattle: Will a healthy Justin Forsett get an opportunity to work on the kick return team again in place of Louis Rankin?

Chicago: Who will see punt returns if Hester is out for a while? Earl Bennett?

Cincinnati: Can Caldwell hold off Cosby in the return game and regain rhythm with Palmer in the passing game?

Denver: Does it remain the Eddie Royal show? What about Correll Buckhalter?

Indianapolis: Will kick returner Chad Simpson get late season carries, or will Mike Hart get the nod if Addai and Brown (injury) are held out?

Kansas City: Sticking with Jamal Charles in the kick return game?

New England: Will the Pats stick with one guy on kick returns that is also fantasy relevant?

Philadelphia: Will DeSean really be out there for all punts coming back from injury?

Tennessee: Will they continue to use Britt on returns?

Washington: Will Rock Cartwright return to kick returns displacing the emerging Devin Thomas and still see a decent share of carries with Ganther and Mason in the RB mix?

Jacksonville: Wih Mike Sims-Walker likely out, Mike Thomas could be in for a really big game!

And some longshots?

Atlanta: If his hip would heal, could Jerious Norwood replace 24th ranked Eric Weems in the return game?

OK, this prolly should be in the bragging thread, but the only folks who visit this thread are the rare breed in the IDP/KR leagues.

Thanks to everyone who contributed this year - but especially Mike Herman.

Back in mid-September he had a brief blurb about the Rams signing a rookie WR who would be a double duty returner.

GB Danny Amendola.

223 return yards today, 1472 for the season (2nd only to Josh Cribbs) - and he wasn't even rostered the first 2 weeks.

Preaseason I figured I was all set; I had a stable of elite kick returners I could plug in:

Will Blackmon, GB

Mark Jones, Ten

Jerious Norwood, Atl

Leon Washington, NYJ

Clifton Smith, TB

Every one of those guys is on IR, except Norwood, who lost his job to Weems when he got his 2nd concussion back around the time I was picking up Amendola.

The Rams WR is easily the MVP of my team in the Total Yardage League.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread - moving on to the Semi-Finals, and its primarily due to this thread.

Niiiiice!Yeah, playoffs start next week for my league. I'm the 2nd Seed (out of 14). My best returners I had this season were (BOLD = who I currently have):

Eric Weems, Atl (had him, dropped him, added him again...could be my best returner)

Clifton Smith, TB (IR - quickly picked up Sammie Stroughter)

Aaron Brown, Det (roller coaster ride with this guy, picked up Derrick Williams - who is also inconsistent)

Andre Caldwell, Cin (until he started sucking at returns, picked up Bernard Scott...and briefly picked up Quan Cosby)

Johnny Knox, Chi (suddenly got inconsistent during mid-season)

DeSean Jackson, Phi (still got him! wish he returned kickoffs too)

LaRad Stephens-Howling, Ari (dropped him like an idiot)

Courtney Roby, NO (dropped him like an idiot)

Mark Jones, Ten (IR)

Tyrell Sutton, Car (ehh...)

Rock Cartwright, Was (started sucking, picked up Devin Thomas)

...and I passed up on Danny Amendola and Dominek Hixon like an massive idiot

(the 1st seed has Percy Harvin, Darren Sproles, and (had) Leon Washington)

(the 4th seed guy has Danny Amendola, Joshua Cribbs, Domenik Hixon, Wes Welker, LaRod Stephens-Howling, and Rock Cartwright) <- don't know why he's 4th...he's had them all on his team since WEEK 2!!

From Rotoworld:

Santonio Holmes is expected to be Pittsburgh's primary punt returner for the rest of the season.

He's taken the job from Stefan Logan, who's been a major disappointment on both kickoffs and punts. Holmes only generated six punt return yards against Cleveland last Thursday, but will get more opportunities going forward.

WASHINGTON

It appears Devin Thomas might be even busier than usual on Monday night against the New York Giants. Thomas is the starting flanker and primary kickoff returner, and judging from Coach Jim Zorn's comments on his radio show Tuesday, Thomas could be involved on punt returns against one of the Redskins' NFC East rivals. Responding to a fan's question about wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who has struggled as the primary punt returner, Zorn indicated the team planned to make changes for the final three games. "We're going to make, you know, some adjustments and things like that," Zorn said during his weekly appearance on ESPN 980's "The Jim Zorn Show." "It doesn't mean that Antwaan's going to be totally sitting on the bench the whole time. But we're going to try to get other guys involved. . . . We're going to try to get Devin more involved now."

After the game Sunday, Thomas revealed he has gotten practice reps on punt returns and is willing to "do whatever the team needs. If it'll help us win some games, bring it on." Hall has been sidelined the last three games because of a knee injury and probably won't use him on returns if he plays against the Giants. Zorn apparently believes it finally is time for a change. "Santana will be more involved," Zorn said. "We'll see what happens as we go along with DeAngelo just to try to get him back there as well."
