PUP vs IR with designation to return? (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know benefits of a team putting a player on PUP vs IR with designation to return. I've been searching, but not finding a specific explanation.

For a player like Crabtree or Harvin. I'm assuming the team gains a roster space with both, but does one give cap relief?

Thanks

Both PUP and IR you count against the cap. Both of them the player in question doesn't take up a roster spot.

PUP, you have to start the season on it. The player cannot play in any of the first 6 games. After that, they have 3 weeks to start practicing or have to be released. Once they start practicing, they have another 3 weeks from the first practice date to be activated or must be cut.

IR with designation to return, the player is also out for 6 games, after which he can be activated. I suppose it differs from PUP mainly in that a) you can assign it after the season starts and b) PUP there is a deadline by which they have to be activated or released, IR is open ended in that regard.

Thanks Greg. So in the case of Harvin, should we expect the Seahawks to put him on the IR w/designation? Or will they put him on the PUP since the season hasn't started? Seems that he may not be able to start practicing by week 9?

Our league doesn't give any relief for PUP players, but IR players free up a roster space.

If the reported 3 to 4 month time frame is correct, he might not be able to start practicing in time. So yes, I'd expect IR w/designation, but PUP might still be a possibility depending on what his actual doctors who are more in the know have to say.

Teams only get one IR designated to return spot and the Seahawks may want to save it since Harvin is eligible to go on the PUP.

Another difference between the IR and the PUP is a player is only eligible for the reserve-PUP during the season if he spends training camp on the active-PUP. Meaning the player cannot practice with the team at all during training camp. If a player gets hurt in practice during training camp the team's only recourse is IR or IR designated to return (with only one spot for the designation). Unless, of course, they carry the player on the active roster.
