putting clauses in FF trades (1 Viewer)

I was wondering if you guy have ever put a clause in one of your FF trades, if so what?

last year I traded my 1st round pick in 2007(ended up being the #7 pick) for Lee Evans right before the trade deadline of week 10. The other guy put the following clause in

if Evans catches 10 TDs from week 10 to week 16 he would also get my 2nd round pick in 2007. I agreed.

I just trade Holt for Henry and the other guy put this clause in, I agreed.

if one of the players get hurt before week 1 the trade is void.

I have never put a clause in for injury (let the chips fall where they may), but I do a ton of draft pick trading and we use clauses all the time.

My most recent one was that I traded for a 1st rounder next year and if that pick ends up being one of the top 3, I will also kick in an additional 3rd next year. Sometimes, this is exactly the kind of leverage you need to get a trade to work for both parties.

I have used clauses in regards to draft picks.

An example:

MY TEAM GIVES:

player A

2008 1st

MY TEAM GETS:

2008 1st

2008 1st

*At this point I negotiate that I will receive the two highest draft picks out of the three.

I also always use expiration dates on my trades. Prevents owners from sitting on deals forever.

I do it all all the time. Conditional clauses are one of the things that can swing a deal I'm on the fence about. I would question the legality of if one of the payers get hurt before week 1 the trade is void but hey, if your rules don't specify anything I guess it's all good.

Auction League clauses are in about every deal.

I trade for Thomas Jones. I give the other guy $20 in cap money over 3 years (0,10,10) but if Jones rushes for over 1,500 yards in 2007 then I throw in a bonus of $10 the next season (2008).

You can really get creative and help get deals done.

I added a clause in trading away my 2008 rnd 1 pick, it was a multi-player deal with a couple of picks also.

I gave: Coles, Battle, M Moore, 2008 rnd 1

I got: DeAngelo Will, I Bruce, 2008 rnd 2 and rnd 3, 2009 rnd 1

and conditional picks in 09 based on my 2008 rnd 1 pick that he got, if its top 3 i get his 09 2nd and 3rd rounders, if its top 5 then just 09 2nd rounder.

It really made me feel better about trading away my 1st rounder next yr, feeling if it was a good pick I'd get compensated.

I've only really had one clause (not counting Santa) in a deal many yrs ago. It was a yardage clause in the RB I was getting, that IF he got over the certain amount...it was a higher draft pick (2nd) and if he got under the yardage amount, it was a lower pick (3rd or 4th). Can't remember it, but the other owner came up with it because they were really high on the player/RB they were giving me, while I had injury concerns. Basically posted the deal and process for lower pick, would swap the picks after season, if needed. THis was all in a dynasty league, of course.

I like this clause with regards to picks.I've dealt a few times with clauses, one was a few years back: I received Rod Smith in exchange for a 1st if he scored more than 200 points, or a 2nd if not. Another had me giving up Culpepper last year, I'd get his 1st if CPep played more than 8 games. Neither worked well for me.

I remember a couple years ago I traded for Garrison Hearst and gave up an 8th. If for any reason Hearst didn't hit 1,200 combined yards I would also get a 12th in return.

The hard part about this is it holds the other teams 12th hostage until Hearst notched that 1,200 yards.

I've also made trades where I would get an owners highest 1st round pick. This is a good ploy to use against a winning team early in the season. In this particular case the owner made an early run then ran out of gas. He began trading pieces of his team for draft picks. He made a move to trade a couple of his star players to a losing team for a collection of picks. He forgot I owned his highest first and I ended up with the 1.2 after winning the Super Bowl.

Once the first guy in our league did it, everyone started doing it. It's great for keeping the trade activity flowing, but man am I glad I'm no longer the commish... :towelwave:

All Clauses should be announced to the league at the time of the trade!

It is a tough enough job for the commish to keep track of without having it announced on the league message board for finding later.

Conditional clauses are great, but yeah, all the details need to be made public. I think it is great because it basically serves as insurance on a deal. That can be an attractive trading chip.

I don't see any problem with clauses as long as the league allows them. But I definitely think that it should be something that is specifically addressed one way or the other in the league rules. It DOES create quite a bit more work for the commish at times.

I've seen clauses used in all sorts of ways. Either specifying the highest or lowest pick in a round, changing a pick based on a player's performance, or even basing a traded draft pick on the performance of the fantasy team getting the player.

I'm not a big fan of injury clauses. If you must do this I would try and specify what "hurt" actually means. It could cause someone with cold feet to try and resend the trade because he is listed on an injury report. Try and specify something like "If he is not listed as OUT on the week 1 injury report" or "Not placed on IR".

hehe if you'd have done that to me, i'd have accepted and then traded away the best one at the deadline to someone elseyou said 'best', but if i traded the best then my second best becomes the best

In the last season that Priest was the starter and then was injured, I traded Priest and a 12th for a 6th, with the condition that if Priest was officially retired by the keeper deadline, the 6th would revert to an 11th.

here is what I proposed to him. We do need to specify what hurt means. if one of them gets hurt, before week 1, and is out for 4 weeks or more then the trade is void. If they both start week 1 then the trade stands.

I have never heard of injury clauses but took part in a trade where the other owner would throw in XX round draft pick if player XX rushed for less XX yards and scored less then XX td's. You get the idea...

do you guys think clauses should be told to the league, up front?
Yes. The full details of any trade should be disclosed when the trade is made.
absolutely. Otherwise you might as well allow loaning of players, trades for players to be named later, etc. Nothing done should be secret.
Anyone who thinks a league is going to allow a clause, that wasn't disclosed to the league at the time of the trade, should be in for a huge disappointment. If the league has a commish who is worth half his salt that is.I mean seriously, why would anyone expect it to be otherwise?Edit to add: Matter of fact, if two owners intended a clause to be part of the trade and intentionally kept that knowledge from my league, they would probably both end up losing draft picks for the attempted deception.
