"Now this week he's had a chance to get all the reps with the 1's, get a a chance to communicate with the OL, with the receivers, with the TEs, with the coaching staff on exactly how we want to go about playing this game. I have all the confidence in the world in him, that's something I've stated from the very beginning. He'll be a good player in this league, & he'll have his opportunity again this week."
He's barely taken first string reps in practice all year. Note the quote above.
He looked bad last week. Typical rookie type bad.
Two fumbles two INTs and then 163 yards of can do determination.
He's a UDFA that has a real fire to him. Famously he left a college game, went to the hospital, and returned to play and win. There's a lot to like about the kid as a project. I don't know that he's anything for today.
There's 10k inexperienced rookie QB things he does that everyone here can just assume he did. Very typical nerves and such.
If you scripted things and it wasn't due to injury, maybe he gets a start or two late in a losing season. That goal is to get him to calm down, call the offense, lead, make OL or route adjustments and that's it. It's not 300 yards or four TDs.
The kid is gonna sling it though and we'll have to see if he can do that or it's all too much for him just yet.
All this Phillip Rivers talk and how he barely had time to prepare- it's about the same here
My guy Adrian Martinez is looming.
He was curiously cut. There were many days he played better than Fields, some not close, and former Jets/Glenn's friends were saying he should definitely be starting and then we started to see NFL GM protecting their key signing. Martinez was pushed to fourth (third w Taylor injury) and Fields had a day or two of bad til it worked and Fields had his best day in camp and then rocked in limited capacity and ...it seemed to help Fields. Just for a couple weeks though. The season was gonna come and Fields was gonna be Fields.
Martinez is an athlete with a presence. He's a leader. Fields is not. This doesn't make Martinez special. This is how 50? 60? QBs are in the NFL.
All summer, Martinez takes the field and suddenly there's order and process. Fields is on, chaos. It was like a switch. And again you pick any other QB and same happens but the Jets QB choices were bad.
Martinez is a lot like Taamu and just looks so darn good in the UFL. He runs to get away and get his feet set to make a good pass. He runs for firsts. He's got a McNair Daunte style under control purposeful managing the game run style to him.
He's a sponge. He had a great rapport with Aaron Rodger and Rodgers is a fan. Shanahan had only good things to say.
UFL MVP and champion, I think twice the Jets camp MVP. As we know, camp MVPs do get cut sometimes so he's one of them.
Anywho, so what's important here-
Cook and Martinez can run. I think 4.5 for Martinez and 4.6 for Cook. The Jets new staff wanted a type that wasn't exclusive to Fields.
The why is probably because their line stunk last year in a frustrating look good look good, broke down manner. The offense though is scripted for mobile game managers. During the summer, at times it looked like a fun offense regardless who ran it. Fields had a game or two where it looked sharp. We love running QBs in FF and the Jets may have created an offense we gotta pay attention to.
Cook isn't in a good position with Hall playing injured and looking worn down and new WRs since the deadline. That's better than Cam Ward but by a little. It's a bad setup for a rookie.
Martinez is probably better here. (Many QBs would be) He's gonna bark orders and keep em in line in the huddle and do veteran stuff even though he's barely played in the NFL either. He just looks far more experienced.
If the Jets can get a good looking QB here and show a good looking offense, it'll be like winning the lottery. Chances are probably similar. Their off-season becomes very different if they can close out strong.
I really think it'll be Martinez taking over but you'll see Cook is a rookie but also he's a baller.
