QB Bryce Young, CAR (1 Viewer)

Jacob Gibbs has been rocking videos of every QBs cut ups. They're fantastic.
I forget exactly what but Young was like great in short passes, good at medium, and not good deep.
It's about as honest a review as we've ever seen. Here's the videos, here's the stats from what you just saw.

I thought the light went on for him last year. I sensed a change from trying too hard to skip this I'm just being me. I loved his play in college and thought he was OMG bad but last year gave me pause. I don't think you should count this kid out just yet.

If Bryce somehow settles into even being a top-15 NFL QB, it’ll be one of the weirdest and most interesting success stories ever after the winding road he’s been down already.

What’s so unusual about it?
First overall draft pick. Plays his entire rookie year. Gets BENCHED his 2nd year, where it seems like the team had already given up on him. I can’t remember another 1st overall QB pick getting benched and come back with the same team (instead of being traded for a “fresh start”).
Can you?

FWIW…

Several overall first picks at the quarterback position have been benched, including Terry Bradshaw, JaMarcus Russell, Jameis Winston, Troy Aikman, and Bryce Young.

Here's a more detailed look:
Terry Bradshaw: Benched as a rookie after poor performance in his first few starts.
JaMarcus Russell: Benched during his third season after struggles.
Jameis Winston: Benched in his fourth season, later returning to the starting role ESPN says.
Troy Aikman: Although not benched in the traditional sense, Aikman's rookie season was not successful.
Bryce Young: In 2024, the Carolina Panthers benched him for Andy Dalton after a poor start to his NFL career.

So 5 other dudes you can think of in the past 50 years...and you’re arguing that Bryce’s path is not unusual? It’s certainly not typical.
I guess my use of “most” and “ever” should’ve been “top 5 most” and “in recent history”?

Well, you're dealing with a population of less than 30 players to start out with so 5 is not an insignificant amount. You're certainly correct to say it's not typical but I think that's mostly because Head Coaches tend to be stubborn with QB's they picked #1 overall.. We've seen lots of them who struggle early in their career on a bad team but the coach sticks with them until the team just gives up on them 3 or 4 or 5 years later. I think a lot of them would have benefited from an early benching.

Funny, I'm an old guy so when I read your post, the first guy that popped into was Bradshaw. I remember that situation well. I think he might have been benched a couple of times (for Terry Hanratty and Joe Gilliam). I've long felt that he benefited from those benchings.

Right on. You’re saying what I’m saying. Not typical. Unusual. Even surprising (my words) that he’s rebounding when many were already writing him off.

Why am I arguing about Bryce Freakin Young?

Not #1 overall picks but I dont think its necessarily awful for a 1st rder to sit for a while - really like the coach and upgrade of weapons. Definitely a path and skills for him to be a top 10 dynasty QB if he develops

Seems like yesterday people had literally tossed him out of the league. It was crazy. Like the debate wasn't is he good or not. The debate was will he get another shot to be the starter. It was silly.
Give him credit though, he worked hard and persevered. The people saying this weren't crazy he looked like straight trash on the field, there was nothing to hang you that on decision wise and was undersized. He fought and surprised me and I root hard for him now and he's a big part of my draft strategies this year as QB2 with the most upside possibly

For sure. This young man narrowed his focus and put the work in. Happy for him.

Yeah. His anticipation looked great last night. Tet gives him a legit WR1. I don't know where the ceiling falls, but he'll be a lot better.

Hearing a lot of that w Caleb Williams. CJ Stroud having a solid rookie season might have put more pressure/ bias/ perception on expectations for Young.

In ways, it feels like Nix and Daniels (and maybe even Maye) brought the same bias on Williams. All of these guys have varying degrees of enablers (coaches, systems, OL, and position players) surrounding their circumstance.

Learning this game takes time and it never stops evolving. I was impressed with the awareness, confidence, speed and precision Young showed at the back part of 2024 and that carried over into the limited scope we saw last night.

Good post. I'll die on this hill: The NFL QB position is the hardest in sports. Outside of maybe Olympic curler.

There's an account on X that has released numerous compressed reps from players this offseason. The one he did on Bryce Young showed this guy is an NFL QB. Young is grounded IRL, smart, and throws with anticipation. That's a good foundation for success. I hope he breaks out this year and solidifies himself as a franchise QB.

This. The talking heads are way too quick to proclaim a high pick QB a bust. I suspect both Nix and Daniels will come back to Earth a bit this season and then figure it out.

The same talking heads that puff up these young QBs prior to the draft. When defensive coordinators start rolling complicated defensive schemes at young QBs things change quickly. A highly touted QBs worst enemy - blitzes, bad OL play, coaches that cannot facilitate development, and impatient media looking to worm up to whatever side sells more copy (tuning into local sports radio, local stations, cable networks, and platform clicks).

I like the Young approach, ramp up and prove that adjustments are working. Incremental progression of player, coaches and the offensive unit = vast improvement and success. The road should be bumpy before the talent pierces the veil and empirically speaking we have seen this play out in the NFL.

Bryce Young completed 18-of-35 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Panthers’ 26-10, Week 1 loss to the Jaguars, adding five carries for 40 yards.

Young also lost a fumble in a stink bomb performance that stopped his late 2024 momentum dead in its tracks. He was lucky to have “just” three giveaways, as he tossed a fourth quarter pick-six that got undone by a defensive holding penalty away from the play. Young’s supporting cast looked awful following the trade of Adam Thielen and injury to Jalen Coker, not that it was going to be elite with those targets in the lineup. Young did take only one sack, and was moving well on the run. He just wasn’t making good decisions or creating offense down the field. It’s a major step back, but the development of young quarterbacks can be non-linear. Young will try to get on track in a Week 2 road date with a Cardinals defense that was mighty unimpressive in New Orleans. He will be off the streaming radar.

No more blurbs on Young for me until he gets his mojo back.
