QB Carson Wentz, MIN (1 Viewer)

NFL changing the policy. Wentz can play Sunday if he shows no symptoms. Do we know if he tested positive or was a close contact?
I think it’s foolish to play the side effects card at this with what we know and the number of people vaccinated.  Yes, he’s selfish.

So Wentz tested positive today. Tuesday.

No rules indicate 5 days for unvaccinated players.

Everything I'm reading says under the new rules he has a chance to play. Don't get that when 5 full days would be through Sunday.

Clear as mud.

Was just listening to NFL network post new protocol rules. Feel like there's a very good chance Wentz plays.

Specimen was collected YESTERDAY not today so his five days will clear.

All he has to do is show improved "self reported" symptoms...and team doctor agrees.

So unless Wentz is clobbered by this I'd think he'll play.

My take.

Colts activated Carson Wentz from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Colts also activated CB T.J. Carrie and OT Braden Smith. Wentz still needs to clear COVID protocols Sunday morning but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport notes that he’s fully expected to start. After missing practice all week and possibly still recovering from COVID symptoms, expect Indianapolis to keep leaning on Jonathan Taylor versus the Raiders. Taylor is this week’s RB1 while Wentz is a middling QB2 option.

NFL Network's Stacey Dales reports Carson Wentz (COVID) has been cleared to play in Week 17 against the Raiders.

Wentz was activated from the COVID list on Saturday and cleared his final medical hurdle this morning. He will start over rookie Sam Ehlinger, who worked with the first team throughout practice this week. With Wentz getting no practice reps leading up to this game, the Colts may actually find a way to increase Jonathan Taylor's workload. The season's RB1 remains the best fantasy option at his position while Wentz is a desperation-QB2.

Lack of practice and covid killed wentz and killed this team. They got away from Taylor again as well. When things go off script this team is doomed with reich

per article in Rotoworld -

The Colts, who controlled their own destiny, were eliminated from the playoffs with the loss. Wentz was a disaster, getting shut down by a historically bad Jacksonville team, with his lone touchdown coming deep in the fourth quarter. After a career worst 2020, Wentz broke down in the second half of 2021, failing to clear 250 yards in his final five games while throwing just six touchdowns. Wentz's completion-percentage (62.4%) and turnover ratios improved in the Colts' run-first offense, but his play down the stretch overshadows what would have been a rebound year. With the quarterback trade market expected to be active, the Colts could look to get out of Wentz's contract this offseason.

Who would take him? Who would replace him? Where’s the evidence that this is anything more than a blurb writer spitballing?

Wentz is done mentally. He just can't slow things down for himself anymore and I'm guessing that will never change. If they can get a can of beans for him and that awful contact, they need to do it

Wentz surely came up small when the team needed him the most, but he actually had a decent year. 27 TDs/7 INT with a 96 QB rating (before today). He was basically a game manager for an offense that totally ran through Taylor. The defense didn’t do them any favors down the stretch and they absolutely seem to need a credible 2nd receiving option to free up Pittman more.

Cut him and sign either Deshaun Watson or more remotely Aaron Rodgers.  He would cost 15 in dead money and they would save 13 against the cap.  Currently the Colts have 55M in cap space (7th most in the NFL)

Watson and Rodgers are both under contract to their respective teams for 2022. Trade compensation would be necessary.

I’ve had time to reflect and get over my anger over the Colts loss to arguably the worst team in the NFL, knowing a playoff birth was at stake.  With that said, if I could be in the mind of Chris Ballard and to be able to influence his thought processes,  I would say this to Frank Reich:

Chris:  Frank, tell me, how committed are you to Carson Wentz?

Chris:  Before Frank can answer, say this.  Frank, it’s not whether I think Wentz is good or bad, it’s that I don’t trust him in a big game.

Frank:  ……..but, but, , but 2017!!!!

Im not blaming Wentz solely for the loss either.  The OL and defense was bad.

Frank is loyal to a fault. I don’t know if he could take his Wentz-blinders off.  I like Frank…even more after the dang HBO season.  But if he can’t cut bait, he may have to be gone as well.

+1 the D laid an egg as well this week. Usually they bail out the offense and that just didn’t happen.

The OL was terrible, as well.  Can't believe how dominant Josh Allen and company looked.  Stuffed  JT way too many times during the game at critical times

Man there is a lot of Wentz hate out there - dude finished #12 in my league.  I think the Colts can win with him - this is not like the Darnold trade where he fell on his face.  They invested a 1st rder in him - Id give him another year and add a better WR corp....he looked bad at times but definitely better than last year.  A second year in the system with stronger weapons could make a real difference.

Most embarrassing loss I’ve seen in quite some time. That loss made the perception of the first round pick so much worse than a win would’ve. Just getting into the playoffs was worth a first round pick and they couldn’t seal the deal. I think this all falls on reich. Too many times he just looks clueless out there but his team is pretty talented to overcome it. He’s a solid coach but they won’t win a super bowl with him in the range of outcomes. I think wentz played pretty decent in game manager plus role but his second receiver was a washed TY Hilton? Pittman is ready to be an alpha but you gotta get some additional help.

Losing to a #### Jacksonville team and losing your playoff spot is a fire able offense. If Flores can get fired, so can reich.

I think Indy has to find some way to beat Jax, period. They looked like a deer in the headlights.

That said, how many play-offs teams are Indy's WR group better than? 2? 3?

Such an embarrassing loss that Chris Ballard will change some things.  What that will be I don't know, except it is obvious they need better WRs. It goes well beyond that however.  Yesterday's fiasco was due to the OL, Wentz, and the defense.   He is too good of a GM to not do something and I'm pretty sure he's reading all the stuff blasting both him and the organization this morning.

When asked if Carson Wentz would be with the Colts in 2022, GM Chris Ballard said he was "not going to make a comment on who is going to be here next year and who is not."

"At the time, we felt it was the right decision," Ballard continued on acquiring Wentz. "You’ve got to have stability at the QB position, and he has to play up to his potential. I’d like for Carson to be the long-term answer or for somebody to be here for the next 10 years.” With $15 million in dead cap space left on his deal for 2022, the Colts will find out that separating from Wentz could be tough. Odds are an organization would still be willing to take on his $28.2 million cap hit as a stopgap under center for the right price. Wentz's market, which obviously does not include the Colts keeping him, will be interesting to watch this offseason.

Appearing on the Colts' in-house podcast, GM Chris Ballard again declined to commit to Carson Wentz for 2022.

“I don’t care who you have at the position at the time — I think every year, you’ve got to evaluate it in full, both free agents and the draft," Ballard said. "I mean, it’s that important. And it’s one that we’ll exhaust each and every year and we do with our scouts and with our coaches.” In theory, this is just a normal "competition" mantra from a coach/executive, but those simply do not happen for established franchise players. The Colts are leaving themselves wiggle room to upgrade if the right opportunity presents itself or go back to the Wentz well if nothing materializes in the draft or trade market. They could also add veteran competition in free agency, but that might be more mess than it is worth, as no clear upgrades are headed to the open market.

Seems like the organization is in lock step to state non-committal things when it comes to Wentz. Seems a high possibility he's one and done in Indy.

Wentz was very disappointing down the stretch when teams tightened up against the running attack, and he couldn't even make defenses pay.

They are definitely trying to move on from him. I can see a team in a 2-3 year rebuild taking on the contract (like Goff) and the Lions. Also, when you give a 2nd rounder that turned into a 1st rounder, yeah, someone is going to get the axe, and it won't be the GM.

Taylor had an alltime great season carrying the offense......and Carson choked it away. If he's not going to carry the offense and can't be a game manager (in an offense he's run before).....what good is he?

This season ending was as bad a result as Colts could have had in that deal. Still crazy to think Colts didn't make the playoffs somehow

Someone has to take the blame for the embarassing choke job at JAX and it won't be GM/coach, it'll be Wentz, and that's just how it goes sometimes

Yeah he faltered down the stretch - but 3500 yds, 28TDs 7 ints - I cant see him not getting a job next year with so many awful QBs in the league.  What are better options for the Colts without any 1st rders?

The GM sunk a valuable asset into a poor decision that his HC couldn’t rescue. Thin ice is a fair assumption for everyone in Indy

Chris Ballard will get a little extra leeway from the media, who spent the better part of the last several years giving him a tug job.

So Sam Ehlinger next year then?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Carson Wentz will "'probably" be traded or released before the start of the new league year.

The new league year is when Wentz's $15 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. Wentz's future in Indy looks "bleak," according to Mortensen, which doesn't come as a surprise given how the Colts' season ended and the lack of support Wentz has received this offseason. Wentz is unlikely to draw interest on the trade market and the Colts will be taking a $13.3 million dead money hit if they release him in March.

I'm of 2 minds here. While I think he wasn't worth what they gave up for him, he's not a bad QB, just a lower end starter. He's in that category of, "good enough to win with, but not because of" that I think Jimmy G, Teddy, and Goff are in.

Without a 1st round pick, and unlikely to be a player for a major QB(Watson, Rodgers, Wilson) I'm not sure there is an upgrade available, and $15 million isn't a bad salary for this level of player.

There probably is a trade market for him, but not for anything close to what they gave up. Likely looking at maybe a 3rd and 4th rounder from a team with serious QB issues(Commanders maybe?) For the record, if I were a team needing a QB, I'd rather trade for Wentz than Jimmy G.

So how overrated is media darling Chris Ballard? These are the types of deals that get you fired
Only if you have a terrible owner.

Ballard has almost universally made good moves. Look at his draft record since 2018:

2018: Outstanding-Quinton Nelson, Darius Leonard, Braden Smith, Nyhiem Hines

2019: Not as great but contributors like- Rock Ya-Sin, Bobby Okereke, and Khari Willis

2020: Outstanding-Michael Pittman, Jonathan Taylor, and turning their 1st into DeForest Buckner.

2021: Doesn't look great but Kwity Paye looked pretty solid.

FA wise, Rivers was a good 1 year rental, Xavier Rhodes was a successful reclamation project, and Eric Fisher was solid.

Considering he had Andrew Luck's sudden retirement sprung upon him, I think he's arguably been a top-5 GM during this stretch. The Wentz move was maybe his worst move, and it wasn't a total disaster(like Carolina trading for Darnold was) Wentz was decent, just not worth the draft capital, especially as they likely could have traded up(though lost Paye in the process) for Mac Jones, or possibly Justin Fields for the price Wentz ended up costing.
