QB Jalen Hurts, PHI (2 Viewers)

What I sent to subscribers:

Jalen Hurts has been downgraded to "Questionable" with an illness. He's reportedly going to fly separately to Seattle for the Monday Night Game.

I agree with our Jason Wood here, who wrote:

"There's little precedent for someone missing a game due to flu-like symptoms outside of when the NFL was enforcing strict Covid protocols. I would be stunned if Hurts missed the game, and I don't think it would materially impact his performance.

"That leaves people with two options -- pick up Lock or Mariota. Both should be widely available because it's the playoffs, and few playoff teams were starting Geno Smith or need a QB like Lock (who was already projected to start on many sites, ours included).

"If, for some reason, someone has a quality QB2 in lieu of Hurts, I would strongly consider it, provided they're not a massive underdog in their playoff matchup."

My take is I think Hurts plays. Star QBs on a top team that's reeling don't sit out games on Monday Night in Week 15. Never forget the NFL is a television show. And nothing sells like hope and drama. I expect wall-to-wall Michael Jordan Flu Game hype up till game time.

If I could get Mariota or Lock as pivots, I roll with Hurts unless I had a super strong backup option. If had a stellar backup QB available like Allen, Jackson, Prescott, Mahomes, Purdy or Stafford, I'd consider them as they're more safe in that you feel certain they'll play.

But my gut feel is Hurts is not sitting out Monday Night Football and if you can back him up with Mariota or Lock I think you're ok.

Do not love this, especially since my backup was Goff who went crazy but due to the schedule he couldn't be played. I really really don't want to have to insert Mariotta- especially since I also have Devonta.

Yeah Hurts still has 30 hours to recover. There is a good chance he's feeling mostly fine when he wakes up tomorrow. He would have to be so extremely ill to not play tomorrow. I feel pretty safe.

As a side note, and I know they said he was traveling apart from the team to cut down on this chance, what if it's to late and he's already exposed another player and they are just not sick yet? I just say this as someone who is mulling Goedert and Swift in a lot of lineups today and might use that as a tiebreaker as I'd have no option if they are out.

I have no idea what to do. My dynasty league doesn't allow pickups, so Mariota isn't an option. I have Sam Howell as another option and the matchup this week isn't bad. It's a close playoff matchup and we both have lots of guys playing later, so consider it 50/50. Looking for any thoughts on what you guys might do in my situation.

Mariota may be a necessary pick up for those of us expecting to start Hurts on Monday.
Just did exactly this. Other option would be Sam Howell, which I'm now considering
I’m in the same situation but I’ve made a decision: I dropped Mariota to pick up Howell.

It’s the fantasy playoffs. I can’t rely upon uncertainties. Howell is more of a sure thing than The Eagles QB situation, so I’m rolling with him.

I still might decide to start Howell. He hasn't always looked pretty, but his scoring has been really consistent this year.

My backup is Lawrence. It's just a really tough matchup against BAL. But Mariota isn't available in my league.

With no insurance Mariota, I probably have to go Lawrence, right?

Guy in our league rolled the dice and didn’t have a backup QB. We don’t allow pickups after FAAB deadline on Wednesday. If Hurts doesn’t go he’s done

At this point, I think he is going to play. No reason for him to fly otherwise. Though because I'm mean. I picked up both Lock and Mariota. If he does not play I'm moving on. And if not I'm most likely going to lose depending on a huge game by The Ravens defense. So, my season is most likely over.

Watching this thread and news carefully. I've got a 5pt lead with Hurts & AJB to play, opponent has Swift & Lockett.

Agree with others, if he's flown out, why would he not play?

Back to week 3;

"... Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts confirmed that he played through flu-like symptoms during Monday night's 25-11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Just us executing," Hurts said, describing what it took to gut it out. "It's not the first time I've dealt with this or had to play with something like this. And it always happens on Monday night for whatever reason."

Wow, this isn't just some added drama thrown in? He's fine & will perform just as he otherwise would. It's a shame because it gets some owners to formulate a contingency plan or pivot away from him and/or their WRs altogether. I would assume the broadcast narrative will be that he's less than 100% and throughout the night, all about this super-human effort.

My fantasy season hangs on him tonight. My 2 most important leagues. Down 17 in a 6 pt per passing and down 27 in PPR with Hurts and Smith. Normally I would feel pretty dang good about getting the wins but this adds just enough worry for me. God help me if I have to sub Mariotta in.

Good luck. I think you are good

There's not a player in fantasy I would trust more in this situation. He's never let me down. I took a gamble on him trading away Hebert after his rookie year and trading for Hurts instead. He's made me look very smart so far and has been the core I've built my dynasty team around.

A lot of speculation Hurts has covid. Maybe it was Rap or Sheft but they very (add oddly) said it is NOT the flu but he is most definitely going through something major.

So cryptic but seems to be he legitimately may miss tonight. I hope that's not the case.

There's been some stuff going around. I work at a high school and a lot of kids and teachers have missed a bunch of school lately. Some have tested positive for COVID, some for the flu, some for both and some for neither. IDK what's going on but there is nasty stuff in the air right now.

I wonder how this will change his playing style tonight. Will he be as willing/able to run? Do they tush push as often?

Let's find out!
I would think it’s pretty much all or nothing. If he was too weak for run a sneak he would be too weak to play. I would be more worried about foggy mind and slower decisions on pass plays then him running for tough yards

Wentz 2.0. Paid him too early, now he's getting exposed.
Exposed as a turnover machine? The DB's (Julian Love) 1st INT probably gets called for PI if the WR fights for the ball. Reviewing the play at the url below, clearly, the WR has first eyes on the ball. But he then allows Love to plant a hand into his chest, for a bit, even a handful of jersey which completely alters the WR's path to the ball. Right at that critical moment when the DB is playing the WR and NOT the ball, if the WR takes a more aggressive approach to the ball he very likely draws the penalty. With the ball placed at the 2, maybe 3yd line everybody knows what happens next & the subsequent desperation INT isn't even thrown....
