QB Jared Goff, DET (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline reports that NFL general managers have begun to vet Cal junior QB Jared Goff beyond the information provided to them by west coast scouts.
Typically, area scouts provide the bulk of information clubs know about prospects in the preliminary stages of the process. In situations such as Goff's -- a high-ranking prospect leaning towards early entry -- the homework timeline accelerates. "During several conversations late last week with those on the west coast close to the situation I’m told Goff’s family is giving every indication he will make the jump to the NFL once he closes out the season," Pauline wrote. "And though far from a guarantee, it seems more than the usual evaluation process is taking place." Goff, who has thrown five interceptions and been sacked eight times during the Bears' two-game losing streak, has a marquee matchup against USC this weekend.

Goff was very sharp today, despite the two picks. He completed 10 of his first 11 passes, with the only incompletion drawing a pass interference call. That string included a 6-yard passing TD to Treggs on fourth and 1, and a couple more "I can't believe he completed that" throws.

He showed the most athleticism we've seen from him, particularly on a third-down play where he was nearly sacked in the end zone, broke out of a tackle, rolled out and took off running, and beat a defender on a spin move that nearly picked up the first down. He also had a couple nice runs later in the game.

The first interception was a very strange play. Goff was under pressure but not being hit, and it doesn't look like the ball or his arm was hit on the release, but the pass came out like a wounded duck. Looks like it just slipped out of his hand. He had a man open but didn't come close to getting the ball to him.

The second interception was on fourth and 10, so not highly consequential. Goff correctly read single coverage and the DB made a good play on the ball; the pass was a bit mislocated.

One play I didn't like was the first play of the fourth quarter, on third and 3. First, it was Dykes getting cute again, faking a moving pocket to the left, with Goff rolling left and then spinning around to throw back to the RB in the right flat. No blocking out there because of the moving pocket; it was a screen play without a screen, and the pass was completed for a loss of seven yards. So, I don't like the play call, but even on a quick misdirection play like that, Goff has to read that the play isn't open and find a second option. That set up the fourth-and-10 that led to Goff's second INT.

Cal got the ball back with 7:13 to play down by 13, on its own 13. Goff had a nifty 13-yard run after breaking the pocket, another 8-yard run for a first down, a nice deep pass to Treggs that drew a PI call, and a 29-yard pass (through the air) on fourth and sixth to keep Cal's hopes alive. The next play he threw a nice back-shoulder pass to Anderson for the TD to pull Cal within 6 with 3:52 to play.

Unfortunately, we never got the ball back, so we didn't get to see Goff in the situation of having to lead a game-winning drive. But for the game, he showed off good mobility and pocket awareness, accuracy, and good decision-making.

Now on the road to Oregon. Night game, so more national exposure for Goff. We'll probably go into Oregon as an underdog, and it should be a shootout. Daniel Lasco had his first decent game since getting injured early in the season, but Cal has still struggled to get any running game going; most of Lasco's yardage came on Cal's first drive, and we weren't able to pick up yardage on first down or in running situations all game long.

Then, trailing 27-14 on the second play of the fourth quarter, the Bears faced a fourth-and-10 play from the USC 37. Goff threw to Kenny Lawler, who was jostling for position with safety Kevon Seymour on the right sideline. By the time the ball arrived, only Seymour was in position to make the play, and he got the pick.

TV replays showed Goff livid on the sidelines afterward.

"I was upset, but I'm not going to talk about why because I'm not going to talk about the officiating," Goff said.

"I'm not saying anything, either," Dykes said. "I'm not going to get into talking about it. It's pretty obvious."
My seats are on the other side of the field from where the play occurred, but I'd have to say that it didn't seem like it was obviously PI from where I sat. But the play would have been just in front of Dykes.

An NFL scout says Cal junior QB Jared Goff will be one of the first two signal-callers drafted this spring if he declares for the NFL.

"I think he's going to be a pretty solid first-round pick," the NFL scout told The Los Angeles Times. "He'd be one of the first two QBs taken in this year's draft if he were to come out." Said a second scout asked by the Times about Goff: Scout 2: "He's an elite-arm talent guy and he's got a much higher ceiling than Cody [Kessler] does. [Goff] needs to protect the ball a little better and needs to play a little bit more and kind of know what he can do and can't do." NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein wrote last week that Goff "will have checks in most of the boxes NFL teams are looking for in a quarterback."

Rotoworld:

CBS Sports' Rob Rang believes Cal junior QB Jared Goff has shown "greater instincts and accuracy from the pocket than Kaepernick," and mocks Goff to the San Francisco 49ers at the No. 5 spot in his latest mock draft.

"Unless Colin Kaepernick makes significant progress over the second half of the 2015 season, general manager Trent Baalke may have little choice but to consider other options, especially if Goff were available to him," Rang writes. The California signal caller has shown NFL traits that evaluators have fallen in love with. However, Goff has shown he's human in the last 4 games, as he's thrown 8 interceptions. Either way, a QB-needy team will have a hard time passing on Goff's upside, if he's on the board in the top half of the first round.

Jared Goff - QB - Golden Bears

An NFC personnel director advises Cal junior QB Jared Goff to return to school next year.

"He's been the hot ticket and talk in college football this year, and there is no denying his talent, but I see him as best served by going back to school," the personnel director said. "He needs more heft to give him a bit more padding and body armor, and the more starts and situations that he sees in college, the better. Plus, his team keeps improving, and success can never be underestimated for a QB." Regardless of the merit of this argument, we'd be stunned if Goff returned to school because of his first-round grade and possible ranking as the class' best QB. Goff has little left to prove in college, though NFL teams do want him to bulk up.

Rotoworld:

Cal junior QB Jared Goff's "rash of interceptions in recent Pac-12 games is concerning," according to CBS Sports' Rob Rang

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Goff does flash traits that evaluators can fall in love with at the next level. In 32 starts, Goff has put up solid numbers, with 10,347 yards passing, with a 77-29 TD-to-INT ratio on his resume. However, Rang notes that "Sonny Dykes' up-tempo spread offense" has helped inflate Goff's stats. Rang still has Goff as his top QB prospect and believes Goff "offers exciting traits: good anticipation, impressive accuracy on short and intermediate passes, functional mobility and toughness."

Finally got around to watching the Oregon game all the way through. People who didn't watch it may draw the wrong conclusions.

First, it was raining all game, pretty hard much of the time. Goff had a low completion percentage in the first half almost entirely due to passes that went through the hands of receivers, and balls thrown away under pressure. He was under a lot of pressure throughout the game. One thing that I noticed is that the offense is designed to get the ball out quickly, but Oregon was doing a good job covering the fast reads. Oregon does not have a good secondary; I'm wondering if DCs are starting to figure out what Dykes is doing in terms of play calls.

The defense gave up over 440 yards in the first half, so Goff had limited opportunities after the first two drives (which included a nice TD throw). He made a mental mistake going into halftime. With Cal down by 21, we had the ball on the 15 with 9 seconds left, time to take one shot at the end zone. Goff did a good job of feeling pressure in the pocket and floating out to his right, but he took too much time, so after the pass was incomplete, we didn't have time to kick a FG.

Now, a rant. On that play, Goff did a great job of keeping his eyes downfield and finding Lawler cutting back from the sideline to the middle of the end zone. He threw a great ball that should have been completed, but Lawler got his head taken off by one of the Oregon safeties. It was an obvious targeting call, which by the rule should have been half the distance to the goal and another down for Cal (plus an ejection). Both players were injured on the play; it's exactly the situation that the targeting rule is meant to address. And if you're going to screw up the game by calling that penalty on meaningless passes in third-and-20 situations, you'd better damn well call it when it happens in the end zone with no time on the clock. Cowardly on the part of the officials.

Still, he should have gotten rid of the ball earlier.

In the second half, the defense continued to suck. Goff was a little off, missing a deep receiver in one on one coverage, and another on a slant. He got lucky when a slightly underthrown deep ball got tipped by the defender into Treggs' hands for a long TD.

Eventually he threw an INT, but it was well into garbage time by that point (we'd already run a hook-and-ladder). The throw was to his third read on the right side of the field after he checked his first two on the left side, and in moving his eyes he failed to pick up the underneath DB.

Overall, not a great game, but given the conditions he ran the offense reasonably well. You don't win many games where you give up 770 yards on defense.

So, now Goff gets a home game against a team we should beat easily; this should get him on track and make Cal bowl-eligible. Then next week, Goff gets his last chance to make a statement, as we go to play Stanfraud in the Big Game.

Against Oregon State on Saturday night, the Bears started out badly; passes on first and second down that would have gone for big gainers were dropped, and on third down it looked like the receiver lost the ball in the lights.

After that, though, it was all Goff, all day. 453 yards and 6 TDs, plus two beautiful 50-yard bombs that didn't result in TDs. He looked awesome. Now, OSU isn't a great team and he wasn't under pressure, which makes a huge difference. He did have one awesome play on third and 20 where he rolled right, thought about running, backed up, reset, and completed a pass for 17 yards. (We went for it on fourth down but didn't make it).

TD highlights from the game: http://www.calbears.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?&db_oem_id=30100&id=4688503

The INT (in garbage time with Cal up by 20) was a mistake, and also Dykes getting a little cute. We have a set we use a lot, where the RB sprints out just before the snap, and the wideout on the opposite side sprints in on the snap for a bubble screen. We scored a TD on the RB swing pass early, and then later pump-faked the RB swing pass and turned around and threw the bubble screen, which also went for a TD. On the INT, we pump-faked the swing pass, turned around and pump-faked the bubble screen, and then threw long down the sideline. It was single coverage against a deep zone, so the read wasn't terrible, but Goff needed to put the ball five yards further upfield. It was a little similar to the INT against Oregon, where he went to his third read and didn't fully evaluate the situation before throwing it.

Other than that, a great game that should calm some of the questions about him. Goff is definitely on the downswing in the hype cycle right now, but with the Bears now bowl eligible, he'll have a couple chances to rise back to the top of the pile, starting this week at Stanfraud, which is a very beatable team. Gotta get some help from the D but it should be fun.

It was definitely a melancholy day of "what might have been." If we had a running game. If we had a defense. If the officials didn't curiously miss obvious penalty calls against the home team while calling ticky-tack crap away from the play against the visitors in crucial game situations. If Goff weren't missing his top WR and top RB. Because Goff looked amazing despite being the only thing the Bears had going on the field. Avoiding the rush, passing with speed and accuracy, making good decisions, and consistently digging Cal out of holes. 10/18 on third down conversions, with 9 of those 10 coming on passes from Goff. He even picked up a first down on the first reception of his Cal career, on a throw-back pass from Enwere.

Cal coulda been a contendah if Goff had arrived at a different moment in the program's history. As it is, he'll be all over the record books but without a particularly happy legacy. Unless he decides to come back, which seems unlikely (though he's strenuously avoided saying anything about it).

On the first two trips down the field in the Big Game, Goff had two great end zone post passes dropped by two different receivers. Lawler would have had them. Stanford was determined not to get beaten deep, so they played a deep zone all game, and Goff just picked them apart underneath, completing passes to 9 different receivers and going 37/54 for 386 yards and 2 TDs, and limiting Stanford to 2 sacks (one of which was a BS intentional grounding call) on his 60 dropbacks despite spotty OL play. The last TD (in garbage time) was an amazing throw threading the needle up the seam to Treggs.

In 54 passes, there were maybe three that were off-target. Really impressive performance.

Now we get our last game, at home against Arizona State, a game we should win. Win or lose, we'll be going to a bargain-basement bowl game, which may provide Goff with one more chance for a high-profile win.

Rotoworld:

Cal junior QB Jared Goff went nuclear in Saturday's 48-46 win over Arizona State, completing 30-of-51 passes for 542 yards and five touchdowns.

Goff and the Cal offense trailed 27-10 at the half, but he found himself a phone booth, donned a cape and returned after halftime to fire four touchdown passes against the hapless Sun Devils. Monster effort on the part of the future NFL gunslinger. Saturday marked his first 500-yard passing effort this season. He's thrown at least five touchdown passes in two of his last three games. For the 2015 regular season campaign, he finished with 4,252 passing yards (64.2% completions) and a 37/13 TD/INT ratio. His numbers as a junior are, almost across the board, the best he's posted in his three-year starting career.

Wow.

If you didn't get a chance to see it, find it and watch it.

After being down 21 in the second quarter, and 17 at the half, with the defense toast, Goff put the team on his shoulders. A beautiful bomb to Hansen went for 52 yards and set up a TD to bring Cal within 10, and then a perfect throw on the slant to Treggs for 49 set up another score to pull within 6. A solid drive including a 20-yard run by Goff on third-and-10 resulted in another TD and brought Cal within 2 at the start of the fourth quarter.

ASU then mounted a 6-minute drive ending in a FG to go up by 6, and on the ensuing series, Goff made the perfect read and perfect throw on the swing pass to Muhammad (1:48 on the video below). The blitz had come from that side and even before Muhammad went anywhere it was obviously going to be a big play. He made the most of it for a 49-yard TD to put Cal up 37-36.

The defense again held ASU to a FG, putting Cal down by 2 with 7:43 on the clock. This would be Goff's first real chance in his career to mount a game-winning drive. (Though, as it turned out, not his last). After keeping the drive alive with another run on third-and-long, Goff connected with Powe on a beautiful back-shoulder throw, for 49 yards this time, putting Cal up 45-39 with 5:58 to play. For those scoring at home, that was five consecutive drives resulting in TDs, four of them including passes of over 40 yards.

The defense still was incapable of stopping ASU, which drove down the field and scored with 3:29 on the clock to go up by 1. So Goff got another chance to mount another game-winning drive.

The key play in that drive came on first and 10 at the Cal 42 (2:17 on the video below). Goff got pressure and stepped up in the pocket, but his primary receiver wasn't open. The ASU rush got to him, and looked like they were going to sack him, but he twisted out of the tackle, reset his feet, and found Hansen for 17 yards. Another completion and then a strong pile-moving run by Tre Watson (remember that name, folks) put Cal in position to run down the clock and kick a game-winning FG. 48-46, Cal, and Goff finally has his signature win. 30/51 for 542 yards and 5 TDs.

Now we get to play in a mediocre bowl instead of a crappy one, and Goff will get a little more exposure.

http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2015/11/29/9422363/california-golden-bears-arizona-state-sun-devils-jared-goff-2015-watch

A couple of other notes: Goff threw for at least two TDs in every game this season, and his lowest yardage total was 277 yards. He's at 8.6 YPA on the season. In his last three games, two against bowl teams (including #7 Stanford), he's averaged 460 yards passing and thrown 13 TDs with just one INT.

Right now some mock drafts have him going as low as #10, but I think you're going to see the hype cycle ramp up over the next few months and he's going to be a top-3 pick.

Jared Goff - QB - Golden Bears

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline reports that "those close to the situation" say there there's a "99%" chance that Cal junior QB Jared Goff enters the draft.

Apparently, HC Sonny Dykes' conflicts with players and the school's administration may have the effect of encouraging Goff to skip town. "As I reported weeks ago the junior has a team of people fully engaged in vetting agents and setting up meetings," Pauline wrote. "Many inside his circle believe it makes no sense for the highly rated quarterback to return to Cal and get pulverized next season the way he has this year. I would expect an official announcement that Goff will enter the draft soon after Cal’s bowl game." Goff has 4,252 passing yards (64.2% completions) and a 37/13 TD/INT ratio.

NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah noted that Cal junior QB Jared Goff's arm "isn't" on Jay Cutler's level.

The analyst added that he "scouted both guys and watched them play live." Jeremiah was referencing an anonymous scout that mentioned that Goff's arm talent compared to Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler. While Jeremiah is a fan of Goff's live arm, back in November, he remained concerned about three things about Goff: The air-raid passing system (because coaches make decisions for him), deep-ball accuracy and rushing throws when pressured.

It's interesting how completely off some of these reviews are. Maybe it's just smoke screening.

PFF's take on Goff is pretty much 100% opposite of this guy's. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/10/06/why-jared-goff-is-the-best-qb-prospect-in-the-country/

(as of Oct. 6)

Goff’s deep ball is among the best in football. If we look at just passes that travel 20+ yards in the air, Goff has completed 19 of 26 passes this season, and two of the incompletions were dropped.

...

The figure is in fact unsustainably good, and if we look at 2014 we see it back down at human levels, but his deep ball numbers remained excellent and plays like that are clearly one of his biggest strengths.

he is willing to stand in the pocket and wait, knowing he is going to take a hit if it buys his receiver the time to uncover. He will happily take the big hit if it allows him to make the big play down field.

PFF is right on both those counts, and I don't know what Jeremiah is looking at.

Here's a better critical account. There's a bunch I don't agree with but it's at least from someone who's paying attention.

Goff's stat line from the Air Force game was outstanding: 25/37 for 467 yards and 6 TDs. He did have a good game, though not quite as good as the stats indicated. He started a bit off, throwing behind Treggs on a crossing pattern and overthrowing Powe on what should have been a TD. Treggs then dropped a perfectly thrown TD pass. The Bears still scored on the drive, on the ground.

There were a couple more off-target throws in the first and second quarters, but then Goff got on track, with an NFL-level 30-yard TD throw to Treggs, dropping the ball in perfectly over his outside shoulder. Air Force tied the game, and then Goff completed a 40-yard pass to Harris and then threw an easy TD to Powe. Air Force then fumbled on the next play from scrimmage, and Goff threw a 24-yard TD to Lawler on the subsequent play, and the rout was on.

The pass to Lawler was beautiful; Air Force was trying to double-cover him, but the pass came out so quickly (one-step drop on a timing route) and was so perfectly placed that the safety couldn't get there in time.

Overall, this game wasn't a great test for Goff; go look at the Arizona State footage for that. Air Force's secondary was overmatched, and three of the six TDs were easy throws to wide-open receivers. (The third quality throw was to Lawler on a jailbreak screen, notable because he looked the defense off to his left, and came back and made the throw to his right in a place that Lawler could catch and run with it). He missed a few throws early but was pretty solid through the rest of the game, and completed a few big throws while getting hit.

In his last four games he's thrown for an average of 462 yards to go with 19 TDs against 1 INT. He'll finish his junior year with 4719 yards at 8.9 YPA with 43 TDs and 13 INTs. Considering the offensive line problems he's had, it's really been an exceptional career (everyone expects him to leave), and I think he's more prepared to start in the NFL than Aaron Rodgers was when he came out.

Get on board!

On board. Goes to either CLE or SF but my bet is SF. CLE may want Lynch after today.
Really looking forward to seeing Lynch today but my Gawd did Goff look amazing yesterday. Neither Lynch or Goff come from Pro Set offenses and neither grades as highly as Jameis/Mariota from this year's draft but I like both of them right now and I also like Wentz and think Cook from Michigan State will go high since he is from a Pro Set and can make throws and has the measureables but with questions on leadership or he'd be a lock as the top pick.

I like this QB crop but taking a QB in the top-ten may not be the only way to get a 'decent' prospect. I think at least one falls to the top of the second round ALA Derek Carr or bottom of the first where someone moves up ALA Minnesota did to land Teddy Bridgewater.

But yeah, looking forward to seeing Lynch today. Game starts in about an hour.

all 4 are franchise level QBs. There are more than 4 teams that could use them. CLE, SF, HOU, desperately need a franchise QB. If Bradford moves on PHI joins that list. Also there are teams on the verge of losing their franchise guy. NO is at the top of the list. ARI is about 2-3 years away from Palmer being done. If they are smart they are looking at Wentz. All 4 could go in the 1st. No one wants to be the guy with out a chair to sit in. I could see some trading up for Cook. STL doesn't have any faith in Foles. I don't have any faith in STL turning it around unless they get rid of Fisher the dinosaur.

Taping the Memphis game and the one after it. I forget who is in that. A WR I think.

Disagree about Lynch. The Browns would be fools not to take him.

I liked Lynch a lot heading into the bowl game that is airing right now but Lynch is not have a good game. He's been under duress but he hasn't looked good.

Game is tied mostly due to a Memphis defensive TD and the fact Auburn's first and second string QBs are OUT and the backups have thrown three picks not so much due to Lynch making any offensive headway.

Not having a good day...just threw an INT.

Aaron Rodgers had a lousy final game though.

At this point I'd be surprised if Goff makes it past the #2 spot in the draft.

The Browns picked the PERFECT time to tank.... Another half assed 6-10 would have killed us.

Sitting pretty at 2... Dont see any reasonable explanation on how they pass on Goff there... Hue is gonna get his man.

I don't know about being the PERFECT time to tank. That probably would have been a few years ago when Luck came out but we won a meaningless game and wound up taking T-Rich and Weeden so..... but here is another new story on Goff's updated draft status that also has a short video that has a nice tidbit or two.

Jared Goff: Latest News, Rumors and Buzz Surrounding QB's Draft Stock

NFL Draft: Titans willing to deal No. 1 pick, so what can they expect to get?

This will be an interesting scenario to watch. The Titans will shop the pick, and if Goff aces the combine and evaluation process leading up to the draft it is feasible that the Browns or another team will pull the trigger on trading up to the #1 pick.
From the linked article.

When teams have dealt the top pick, they have lost draft value 4 out of the 5 times.

"Basically what we're looking at here is the fact that only one of the teams to trade the No. 1 pick in the past 28 years has won the deal in terms of Draft Value (the 2004 Chargers) and even that was only because they managed to squeeze future picks out of the deal. Amazingly, they probably had the least amount of leverage of any team in the group, because everybody and their mother knew the Mannings didn't want Eli to play for San Diego.

... More picks are usually better than one, but you have to get lucky and actually nail those picks to make it count. If Robinson feels particularly good about the top player on the board, he should probably just take that guy..."
