QB Jayden Daniels, WAS (6 Viewers)

I think Sinnott can give us that TE upgrade in his 2nd season. TE's rarely ever hit year one. They loved his metrics coming out. And I'm pretty sure Ertz mentored to him all year what a great pro to learn under. I'd rather see us spend draft capitol on the line, upgrading our #2 WR, possibly upgrading at RB, and of course improve our secondary. Future is definitely bright because Jayden IS that dude.
Sinnott looks like an eventual starter but Ertz also seems to have some gas left in the tank. Personally I think we're okay at TE right now - I'm hoping the Commanders are able to find some talent at OL, RB, WR, LB and CB in free agency and the upcoming draft. Protection for Daniels is key. But if BPA in round 3+ is a TE, I trust Adam Peters to make the right choice. He has been outstanding in his brief time in WAS.
Why upgrade RB? Robinson/Ekeler is solid. They need a roadgrader or two up front to create the occasional opening.

No doubt, OL is a top priority. But this draft is deep at RB and I wouldn't mind if they snag one. A better running attack takes some pressure off Daniels.

That defense needs to be entirely rebuilt.

A good bit of it does but not all of it. Sainristil, Allen, Payne, Newton, Luvu, and Wagner are decent or decent+; just my opinion as a weekly viewer and fan since they sank the Maine.
Safety needs help, and cornerback needs even more help. And the D-line produces no pressure to speak of.
A better defense will help Daniels by getting him the ball more often and in better field position.

But what will really help him is a big effort by the front office to improve the offensive line.

Wagner is 34. Jonathan Allen is about to turn 30. Newton & Payne had below average PFF grades (admittedly I don't watch WAS closely enough to know if they have any utility going forward, but I would guess if they did it would be solely as rotational pieces but neither are "studs"). I'm not saying that upgrading the offensive line wouldn't be a good thing, but I would put it behind upgrading the defense, especially the defensive line.

Top 5 QB as his floor?
See Stroud, CJ. I think both are good QBs, but the sophomore slump is real. DCs have a full offseason to know Daniels' tendencies. I suspect his floor is 15 with his ceiling being 5 or so.
For sure but Jayden has something Stroud doesn't': wheels. His rushing should keep him high up in the fantasy points department even if his passing takes a big step back. Justin Fields has been a top 10 QB in ppg twice and he's maybe the worst passer in the NFL. Daniels is getting on average 7-8 points a game just from his rushing. If he passes at the level that last year's washed Kirk Cousins did and then throw in those extra 7 points from rushing, he's at 24 ppg which would have been QB5 last year.

for sure. a really good pulling guard would work wonders for the run game.

alternatively a good fullback may be helpful though I dont know if that fits with the scheme they run there.

either way upgrading the O line is never a terrible option.

Anthony Richardson is worse than Fields. Guy can't even do a simple game of catch.

True. We know Jayden Daniels won’t be that bad as a passer. He might have a setback but nothing like that.

Yeah. What are they going to do about it?
They will likely scheme to keep him in the pocket more and force/bait him into passing left. He's definitely favored the right and at one point in the season didn't have a completion while moving left. We'll see if it works or not.

100% agree with this, and I'd add that Stroud was NOWHERE NEAR as good as Daniels was as a rookie. Daniels was a legit MVP candidate.

I wouldn't be against someone taking Daniels at QB1 overall in fantasy. I'd very much argue NFL-wise, he's already a top-5 QB.

I think CJ Stroud is getting dinged too much for bad luck and organization failures. I only saw a handful of Houston's games last year but, in every one, he was running for his life 0.2 seconds after the ball was snapped on passing downs. He also had all of his receivers get hurt. He's not a runner like Daniels, Allen, or Jackson. For FF purposes, his cap is probably somewhere around what Goff has done the last couple of years provided Houston gives him something to work with. In NFL terms, I think a whole lot of teams would trade their QB rooms for Stroud right now.

I'm not sure the league catches up to players like Daniels. If he's as smart as he seems, he'll find a different way to make them wonder how to stop him. We've seen this before recently with Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Hurts.......

His FF numbers may take a hit a little this season but, barring injury or some type of scandal, I don't see how he can't get drafted as a top 5 QB. If I were in a startup dynasty draft, I'd strongly consider him at #1 overall.

Assuming that statement is referring to SF leagues?

I am not even really knocking Stroud, just saying the performance fell off. I do think it was due to coaching and roster construction. However, would anyone be surprised if Washington has organizational failures this season? They have on average the oldest team in the NFL. The backfield is about the least inspiring in the league. Their TE is 34 year old journeyman who lacks any semblance of explosion. McLaurin is holding out. Their big offensive addition is Deebo who has had a lot of wear and tear on his body and comes with a lot of question marks. I could easily see a world where through no fault of his own, Daniels struggles more as a passer this year. But like we are both saying, his rushing ability will buoy him. Injury is the one big concern with him IMO. He's thin and willing to take a lot more hits than it seems Lamar is.

Yes, though I think he'll go really high in non-SF startups. I would not take any RB over him in either format. Chase, Jefferson, and the usual QBs are also in play.

Sure. And people were saying (some still are) that Lamar Jackson was going to get killed because he was too thin and ran too much. He learned how to protect himself. How many hard shots have you seen him take? His one "real" injury happened in the pocket. He also had COVID 29 times and - IMO - hurt his back performing a stupid somersault into the end zone a couple of years ago.

I've said a bunch of times across threads here that I can see an easy path for Washington to backslide this year. I think the team has more talent top-to-bottom, but that doesn't mean much until they spin the ball.

I think Daniels will figure out how to minimize the damage when he runs. Jackson did. The QB who actually worries me for his safety is Josh Allen.

To me Lamar has always been pretty good about protecting himself. He has no interest in getting hit. I will be honest, I didn't see enough of Daniels as a rookie to say whether he adjusted but in college he was regularly taking massive shots. And it is funny that Lamar's biggest weakness is his own immune system.

I thought Stroud had a lot of good luck in 2023, he wasn't as good as his numbers were as a rookie, and that caught up to him in 2024, and was helped along by WR injuries. Stroud's also one of the cases where he'd greatly benefit from running more. He's mobile, but he plays like he isn't.

I thought Daniels showed a better pocket presence and more accuracy as a rookie, than Stroud has.

The Texans offensive line not doing Stroud any favors.

As I have said before Daniels reminds me a lot of Lamar and I think he is further along in his development as a passer than Lamar was as a rookie.

Sky's the limit with him.

Jayden took the league by storm in a way very few rookies have. It felt like no moment was too big and he was must watch like OBJ or Barry. But memories of RGIII have to make Washington fans a little nervous. Even as an Eagles fan, I hope Washington surrounds Jayden with a competent supporting cast, he deserves every opportunity to grow into an all time great.

Washington has definitely upgraded their offensive line this year, so they see the need to protect him.

The only comp between Jayden and RGIII are the wheels. Jayden can see the field far better and is a much better passer. Jayden looks special!!!

26 attempts/game 66% 1.3 passing TD/game, 0.3 INT/game, 213 passing yards/game
28 attempts/game 69% 1.5 passing TD/game 0.5 INT/game, 210 passings yards/game

Aleast for that rookie season, they seem like pretty comparable passers

I think a lot of fans these days - especially Commanders followers - downplay just how good RGIII was in his rookie season. That guy was electric.

Besides the unfortunate injury suffered late in the season, two things happened that turned RGIII from the biggest sports star in D.C. since Darrell Green into being retro-bashed for eternity.

1. Dan Snyder - who was already getting heat from some segments of the fanbase and media - needed some good stuff around him to take the pressure off. so he and RGIII became friends. Griffin was completely complicit in this and his ego ate it up. He had that town in the palm of his hand 1/2 way through his first season.

2. Mike Shanahan - no shrinking violet himself - hated that Griffin would go over his head whenever he had a complaint about how things were being run on the field (& probably off the field, too).

I don't know anything about the off the field dynamics there but I agree people are getting a little mixed up on how good Y1 was for RG3. Injury and perhaps other things derailed It but he had a monster rookie season and looked like the future of the NFL. I do wonder if the whole knee thing where he came back and played and there was talk the doctors hadn't given him the OK but he was playing anyway is what cost him his career.

Yeah, that didn't help. I think he re-injured it against the Ravens when Ngata fell on him - or, maybe that was the initial injury. My memory is slipping and I'm too lazy to parse out the details

As for the Daniels/Jackson comparisons, Daniels is by far the better passer at a similar point in their careers. He throws a prettier ball and has a cannon for an arm. Jackson was faster, more elusive as a runner, and IMO could run his receivers open better.

The biggest thing I think Lamar Jackson has done for some of the QBs that followed him is that he learned. And, by that, I mean coaches have also learned. You don't hear people like Accorsi and Lombardi hollering "he should be a RB or WR" anymore because these newer QBs are so much more prepared (& in much more welcoming environments) than they were just 8 years ago.

I think you said Jackson a bunch of times there and meant RG3. Maybe. I don't know if I really see a difference in their arm. RG3 threw a nice ball, could make all the throws too. So can Lamar. Also we have to remember Daniels is working with an age and experience advantage. His rookie year he was 23-24. Lamar won MVP at age 22. RG3 was 22 his rookie year as well.

No, I switched to Daniels/Jackson in my last two paragraphs. I just didn't preface it very well. Apologies. I should've done a separate post.

daniels will absolutely be impacted if Terry doesn't play for the commanders. Terry may not be considered elite and I agree with the assessment, but there are some things that you just can't replace. particularly, from google search:

Terry McLaurin has a strong reputation for contested catches, with a high catch rate in those situations. According to NFL and PFF stats, he had the best contested catch rate (70.6%) among wide receivers with at least 20 contested targets in a season over the last six years. In 2024, he led the league in contested catches, with a 65.8% catch rate on such plays, and his 134.1 passer rating when targeted on contested catches was also a league-leading mark.

I’m scratching my head as to how Daniels will be a top QB with the current WR/TE room.
He should improve his understanding of the offense and I mean, he can run still.

Guess it depends on definition of “Top QB” but QB10 without Terry is the absolute floor, could be QB 1 this year but he won’t do that without Terry.

Stats are stats but they aren’t representative of the assignment in this case. Jayden was running hurry up, calling everything at the line, audibling and changing protections, all within the scheme of a legit nfl passing offense. Griffin was doing none of that in a RPO offense that mostly asked him to hit the first read on the pass portion. Massive difference between what they were actually doing on the field. Even still, Griffin became a turd in the off-season after his rookie year. Major, major turd. Daniels has been the exact reverse opposite.
