QB John Wolford, LAR (1 Viewer)

John Wolford will start at quarterback for the Rams in Week 17 against the Cardinals.

Jared Goff underwent surgery on his broken and dislocated right (throwing) thumb Monday and is not expected to get cleared in time for Sunday's do-or-die game with a playoff spot on the line. Wolford, 25, has never attempted an NFL pass and has been with the Rams since April 2019 after signing following a successful stint with the AAF's Arizona Hotshots where he led the short-lived league in passing touchdowns. It's hard to see Wolford actually pulling out the win, but crazier things have happened in this league. The Rams are expected to sign Blake Bortles off the Broncos' practice squad to serve as Wolford's backup after Bortles spent 2019 as Goff's backup.

Oookay, I'll admit it....I'm John Wolford....so?

 
John Wolford completed 22-of-38 passes for 231 scoreless yards and one interception, and ran for 56 yards on six attempts in the Rams' 18-7, Week 17 win over the Cardinals.

Far more athletic than Jared Goff (thumb), who missed this start after getting hurt the previous week, Wolford was used on some design runs in order to create some sort of offense. The Rams were dominating the Cardinals in yards and time of possession most of the day with Kyler Murray (ankle) missing two-plus quarter of action. All Wolford had to do was take care of the ball enough to get the Rams in field goal spots. The defense did the rest, scoring the Rams' lone touchdown on a pick-six by CB Troy Hill. The Rams earned a Wild Card berth with the win, and it'll now be interesting to see if Goff is ready for next weekend. He was throwing the ball in pre-game warmups.

John Wolford will start for the Rams in their Wild Card game against the Seahawks. 

Jared Goff is active against the Seahawks just two weeks after having surgery on his injured thumb, but won't get the green light. Wolford threw for 238 yards and an interception -- along with 56 yards on the ground -- last week against Arizona. Look for the Rams to implement a ball control offense with lots of Cam Akers against Seattle.

John Wolford was forced from the Rams' Wild Card game against the Seahawks with a neck injury and is questionable to return. 

Jamal Adams missiled into Wolford on the ground at the end of a play and for some reason wasn't called for a penalty. Adams' shoulder made direct contact with Wolford's head. He appeared in agony as the training staff tried to stretch out his neck on the sideline. He then headed to the locker room. With Blake Bortles inactive, Jared Goff and his injured thumb are now the only show in town for the Rams' beleaguered offense.

Rams coach Sean McVay said John Wolford had a stinger in the Wild Card win over the Seahawks.

Wolford was hit in the head while scrambling early in the game and needed to be examined at a local hospital. The results were positive, and he was able to celebrate the road victory in the locker room with his teammates. McVay said Wolford is "trending in a positive direction", so it's possible that he'll return during the Rams' playoff run. With that said, Jared Goff will be starting as long as he's healthy. Goff escaped the Wild Card game without a visible setback.

Rams coach Sean McVay said QB John Wolford (neck) is "day-to-day."

McVay also wouldn't expand on whether Jared Goff (thumb) or Wolford would start in the Divisional Round against Green Bay. Wolford helped move the ball early against the Seahawks but could be looking at reserve duty since Goff came off the bench and sealed a win despite initially being available as the team's emergency quarterback (and only backup). The Rams' first injury report on Tuesday should at least hint at who will be under center in Lambeau.

The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue reports the Rams' "happiness with John Wolford is not fleeting." 

The Rams have made it clear they are looking to shake up their quarterback room, and Rodrigue considers internal competition from Wolford the most likely scenario. Per Rodrigue, coach Sean McVay likes Wolford's "processing speed and the way he can extend plays with his legs." McVay is also reportedly intrigued by Wolford's ability to "move and to reset his launch point," thereby allowing longer-developing plays. Those were not an option for Jared Goff without a deep threat in 2020, as Goff is not a mobile quarterback or one who makes plays outside of structure. What we are probably seeing here is a team talking itself into Wolford since Goff's contract will make it extremely difficult to add legitimate outside competition. We would take it seriously, but it would be a competition Goff would probably still likely win.

Anybody rolling him out?

Had Stafford to replace bye-week Burrow, so now it's either Wolford, McCoy or Ehlinger.

Think I'll fade the ex-Longhorns and hope that "Wake Forest Wolford" is more likely to get at least get me some rushing yardage.

John Wolford completed 24-of-36 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception the Rams' 27-17, Week 10 loss to the Cardinals.​

Wolford's day went about as well as one would expect from an undrafted quarterback making his second-career start since 2018. A garbage-time touchdown to Van Jefferson in the final seconds saved what would have otherwise been a scoreless day, but Wolford and the Rams struggled throughout most of this one. It's unlikely we'll see Wolford in Week 11 against the Saints unless Matthew Stafford is unable to clear concussion protocol.

Rams coach Sean McVay said that John Wolford will start for the Rams against the Seahawks in Week 13.​

Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic speculates that both Wolford and Bryce Perkins could play, making neither of them particularly intriguing in superflex leagues. Wolford has one touchdown in 78 career attempts and has taken six sacks. He did start against Week 13 opponent Seattle in the 2020 playoffs, earning a quarterback win despite attempting six passes and leaving with an injury.
