If Nagy wasn't so silly and desperate , Fields might've lasted to pick 20 or worse.

Cardale Jones played in 23 games at Ohio State and threw 15 TDs. He wasn't nearly as accurate as Fields. He didn't play like Fields at all. He wasn't nearly as fast as Fields. What exactly do you see in Jones and Fields that is at all similar beyond the color of their jerseys? 

Joe Burrow couldn't beat out Dwayne Haskins. Josh Allen played at a junior college out of high school. Kyler Murray had to transfer. Aaron Rodgers had to play at a community college out of high school. 

 
Fields is definitely one of the more polarizing rookies to assess for dynasty purposes. We all know Ohio State QBs have largely flopped in recent years, which may very well be a factor as to why he slipped in the draft. That said, just because others have failed doesn’t mean Fields will. Just hope he gets the right coaching to assess what he can do rather than be a product of both the OSU and Bears systems.

That's exactly why people should stay away from this Mahomes guy.  Texas Tech produces system QBs and has never had anyone have success in the NFL.  The next Kliff Kingsbury if you ask me.  Same thing with Justin Herbert.  Remember Joey Harrington and Akili Smith?  Bust written all over him...

Should we avoid Saquon Barkley because Kijana Carter and Curtis Ennis busted?  Write off Joey Burrow (who spent more time at Ohio State than LSU) because of Jamarcus Russell? 

It's just an odd stance to take and I hear it repeated a lot. Which overhyped Ohio St guys are you referring to?  Dwayne Haskins is really the only recent bust. Cardale Jones?  Different coach and drafted in the 4th Rd.  Troy Smith? Another different coach and drafted in the 5th Rd.  Seriously. How do the NFL performances of past players, in different systems and with different head coaches, correlate to performances of current players? 

I'm not gung ho on Fields.  He has a chance to be very good but he has a slow release at times and can try to be too perfect.  I could easily see a world where he busts. He has struggled in a few big games (2020 vs NW and Alabama) but even that is overblown.  He played well in the playoffs vs Clemson in 2019 and was other worldly against them in 2020 (385 passing yards, 6 TD, 6 incompletions).  He's had a QB rating under 120 twice in two seasons at Ohio State (65.1 vs NW, 110.9 vs Bama). Just make the evaluation based on actual things.  If you have no faith in Nagy at least that's something that actually has to do with Fields potential.

if it were easily done, i'd love to go back and read tweets and articles from these same beat writers describing mitch's first training camp. i'm far more optimistic with fields than i was with mitch

The Athletic's Adam Jahns reports Bears coaches have been impressed by Justin Fields' "natural arm talent." 

Fields has reportedly made off-platform throws look routine during Chicago's training camp, delivering accurate touch passes and sidearm throws with ease as he practices with the second-team offense. It's hardly a surprise: Fields was college football's fifth most accurate QB in 2020. Head coach Matt Nagy, meanwhile, said the rookie's understanding of the team's offense is catching up to his passing ability. "He's getting close," Nagy said. Jahns said "Fields’ side-armed throws and deep-ball hits haven’t altered the Bears’ plan for him just yet. ... But you’d have to think that the Bears are, at the very least, thinking about slightly deviating from their plan for Fields, whether it’s occasional snaps with the Bears’ best receivers and tight ends or different calls in practice."

Agree.  I was LIVID when Chicago took Fields 4 spots ahead of NE, and we got the Matt Jones "consolation prize".

Will be interesting to compare their journeys going forward.

 
Wow. Haven't been in this thread in a little bit and just scrolled through like a dozen posts in a row talking about how they can't believe so and so passed on Fields. 

I am taking that as a very good sign. It also makes me wonder what kind of offers Atlanta turned down and what (more) that says about how they view Pitts. We know they viewed him highly but I have to think there were some good deals on the table. 

 
As a Bears fan, I am really excited about this kid. The reports out of camp just keep getting better. I haven't seen anything negative about Fields. Seems smart, athletic, hard working, and just a generally good kid. Bears fans have been waiting a loooong time for this.

 
Fields is composed. He made an ill-advised throw off his back foot and was stripped of the ball on a run. But made a good throw on the run to get the Bears near FG range. I think he'll be starting early in the season.

Yes if you think you have a chance at a franchise star QB you don’t pass because you have Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater or Drew Lock in your roster.

Totally agree. Just think that turning the ball over in preseason is not going to win him points to start sooner.

They seem to be going down the Indy path of having a really well built team but trying to get cute/cheap with the QB.

Heck, the Jets could surely end up regretting taking Wilson over him as well of course. It wouldn’t be the first time for them.

 
I LOVE that drive for Fields.

Scrambles with his eyes up field and makes the pass when the defense breaks down. Scrambles, nothing is there,  runs for a couple yards rather than force it. Scrambles, sees the lane to the endzone, takes it to the house. That is exactly what you want out of an athletic QB. Thats what can make you great for a long time in this league, rather than a flash in the pan running QB.

 
I mean, its backups against backups, so Fields should look good. But his decision making is what is impressing me. No red flags on bad habits, aside from a little ball security. 

 
I actually like that he didn't explode in this game. Should keep the price down in superflex/2qb leagues. I think in those leagues he could be a difference maker in the second half of the season.

 
He looked bad against the Fins' 2nd string defense, but great against the 3rd team defense.

To be fair though, the Fins' 2nd string defense had the Bears' 2nd string WRs absolutely draped in coverage.
