QB Justin Fields, NYJ (6 Viewers)

This reminded me me of last year when Mason outperformed Kenny in camp. Chris Hoke was banging the drum for Mason. Year before you could say the same thing with Mitch.

Now everyone knows that Mike Tomlin wanted to draft Justin a few years ago. If Russell has another uninspiring start then I can see the Steelers making the switch or holding out a few weeks. But the way things are looking Justin gives them the juice to win.

Hot garbage at QB right now, both ways

-Could one fo them rise above the other and make a decent 2024 run for the Steelers?
Of course but the early look of things is not very good.

I don't have a horse in the race, but the way this article describes the situation doesn't give me much confidence in either guy. Fields and Wilson had 10 series and they came away with a total of 3 points. I think our bias as humans is that if one guy stinks, that means the other guy has to be better. It's quite possible that both these guys stink.

"PITTSBURGH -- For the second week in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers' first-unit offense failed to put any points on the board as the team dropped Saturday night's preseason game to the Buffalo Bills 9-3.

This time, though, Russell Wilson -- making his preseason debut -- led the unit to its scoreless outing in five series, while Justin Fields' unit mustered only a field goal in five series of its own."

Mike Greenberg on the Pat Macafee Show last week may have the situation pegged perfectly and he said this before this most recent preseason game:

"Greenberg was recently on the "Pat McAfee Show" and offered up a scathing analysis of the Steelers quarterback situation. Greenberg made the claim that the Steelers went from having one bad quarterback in Kenny Pickett to two bad quarterbacks in Justin Fields and Russell Wilson."

KP is not anywhere near the same level as Russell and/or Justin. KP was an entitled baby with a noodle arm, small hands, afraid to throw up over the middle, master of the spin sack to name a few.

Kenny is a in a class of his own. Since the merger, Pickett is the only QB with at least 500 pass attempts to have thrown a touchdown on fewer than two percent of those attempts. He is, quite literally, the worst quarterback in recent NFL history when it comes to touchdown rate.

Writers gonna write, and a lot of this stuff is clickbait.

There’s nuance to watching them play. Fields has a stronger arm and is mobile, where Russ looks slow and washed.

That Fields didn’t throw interceptions should be considered an improvement to his game - there were a couple of looks where he could have, but didn’t.

Sure, we all have biases, but Fields demonstrated a better skill set. And to be fair regarding the scoring drives, there was a critical drop that should have resulted in 1st down in the RZ. That’s not on fields, that’s on the WR. At least he pushed the ball downfield.

Now, does that mean the PIT offense is going to be good, regardless of who’s at QB? Hard to say - they’ve played a pretty vanilla scheme, have issues with their OL, and haven’t had their starting RBs in (Warren left after 1 carry with a hammy of TBD severity) so it’s hard to judge based on preseason.

IMO, Fields has shown more skills so far. But there’s one more preseason game. I believe Tomlin when he says it’s still an open competition.

Even though we love rushing QBs for fantasy, they are so risky to end up on the bench sooner or later when there are obvious issues with their ability to play the position.

The offense didn't look good, for sure. But Fields also got them into the redzone twice and instead of kicking FGs they failed on 4th down attempts.

The best think about Wilson's drives was that we got to see the new punter hit a couple 60+ yard punts

Just so glad that KP is now Philly's problem. Love the fact the Steeler's traded him and a 4th round pick and received 3rd round pick 98 overall that ended up being Peyton Wilson. Got so tired last year hearing that he wins games. So tired of watching him play. Loved the comment on one of the blogs that read that Kenny Pickett held back Matt Canada lol

One can run a bit but he lacks most of the positive traits required to succeed consistently as an NFL QB, while the other is a statue who has been reduced to a check down QB that can't pass over the middle of the field.

Pick the one who is less horrible than the other and pray your defense can hang on somehow during the season.
I largely agree, but with the caveat that I believe Fields can improve at the things he’s currently not great at, where Wilson is what he is at this point. And likely declining from there.
I don't think he will ever be able to process information quickly or be poised under pressure. Basically his QB IQ is what it is. One thing Fields can improve upon is his footwork, which I can see he's trying to do. At least with that can come quicker releases.

Wilson is obviously in regression mode, and the signs were evident last season on film.

The missed TD may not be Fields fault, I was thinking this same thing.

Yep - WR ran a bad route. Just watched it again & read this commentary again. I totally agree.

Looks like people blame Russ for missing the FG, but give Fields credit for making one.

Just to be accurate:
Wilson - 5 series - 1 missed FG.
Fields - 5 series - 1 made FG.

Field Goal No Good
( 6:45) C.Boswell 52 yard field goal is No Good, Hit Left Upright

Field Goal
( :07) C.Boswell 43 yard field goal is GOOD

Justin should be the starter. If T.J. Luther catches that deep pass over the middle then there'd be more talk about his arm and passing. Except T.J. awkwardly slows up and makes a leap that looked out of place.

They need to just start Fields and go full Lamar Jackson as a rookie offense that they ran in Baltimore. One read and run. Play great D. Run the ball.
Kind of late to build that specific (and limited) team structure. Would require some overhaul on personnel with no prime free agents and draft selections to use towards it.

Takes more than 1 player to make an offense work.

Arthur Smith's offense is already run heavy and the Falcons were a great rushing team. The Steelers have traditionally been run heavy.

That's his only chance at any limited success.

Agreed, it's telling that you need to treat a 4th Year QB like he's Desmond Ridder or a rookie Lamar Jackson in order to get the best out of him and that everyone essentially agrees. I don't think he processes information fast enough is what the issue is, so yes, dumb it down for him as much as possible.

The only problem with this is, he literally has the 3rd worst fumble rate in NFL History at 0.95 fumbles per game. On average, he literally fumbles once per game and I don't think that number goes down if you give him more carries. Only Ryan Leaf (0.96) and Daunte Culpepper (0.97) have fumbled more. Appearing on a list with Ryan Leaf makes sense to me (biggest bust of all time) and Justin Fields wishes he was Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper once threw 39 TD to 11 INT, so I think I'll give him a pass.

What's nice about the fumble stat is that it's the one stat that Fields' truthers can't say isn't his fault, because nobody else can make him fumble but himself. Who knows? Maybe if he gets to start in Pittsburgh a few times this year he can take back the #1 spot on this list. He held it briefly last season. Statistically he is the 3rd most fumble prone QB in NFL history.

It’s not the worst idea other than the fact that Fields has already shown he can do more than this.
I should have said Lamar's second year, but he still went 6-1 as a starter his rookie season and ran for nearly 700 yards. That offense was still really vanilla. He also won the MVP that 2nd year. He threw it over 400 times and completed 66% of his passes in his 2nd season. We will agree to disagree that Fields has shown he can do more. He's still not processing fast enough. He should have a couple half field quick reads, and if it's not there take off.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about that, but I would note that offenses tend to be extremely vanilla in the preseason.

I’ve read more than once that the Steelers have used a pretty limited playbook so far.

Maybe they open it up in week 3 of the preseason, but it doesn’t seem particularly fair to make blanket statements about what they should do considering the context of what we’ve seen them actually doing.

Quite a bit can be divined from the preseason. Offensive/defensive play-calling typically isn’t one of those things.

This is what shows up repeatedly on film over the years when it comes to Fields.

He simply cannot process information fast enough and will pass up throwing with anticipation more often than not. Watkins was about to run wide open over the middle and even with Justin staring at it, he doesn't pull the trigger. Asking him to be a pocket QB is simply not playing to his strengths. He is mostly a one read game manager with some running chops. Can still be viable as your backup FF QB, but his overall skillset at the position limits him from having any consistent success as an NFL QB.

Correct. The fact that the WR I've circled in yellow (look at me, I'm a play-by-play guy) isn't targeted let alone gobbling up yards downfield is not surprising to anyone who watched this guy play in Chicago.

Fields has started 27 games the last two years. He has thrown more than 1 TD in 7 of those games.

Justin Fields career: 40 TD passes.

Lamar (year 2): 36 TD passes.

That entire drive was a disaster. Got the ball with 2:04, and Fields did nothing. Luckily, the future insurance salesman playing QB for BUF did nothing, and they got it back, and highlights was what an amazing drive by Fields! :lmao:

NFL talking heads really want this guy to be a thing.

Sorry, but one play doesn’t summarize his entire career. It’s simply not true.

Fields has shown quite a bit over the years. I hate that you’re making me defend him - he’s not a great processor, but he’s better than you’re alleging.

Doesn't the stat you just laid out actually support Fields being better than the consensus shows? Lamar with less TDs in his first two years than Fields would seem to indicate that Fields is on a good track toward production, no?

He can be an accurate passer when given time especially in the intermediate areas of the field, (him and DJ made a living there in 2023), has a live deep arm as well, and can make plays happen while on the run.

Those are his main positives that I've seen over the years. I never said he's useless, but his deficiencies will always limit his success.

From Walter football,
  • Poor pocket awareness
  • Can get rattled by the pass rush
  • Can freeze when seeing the blitz
  • Must get better at passing in the face of the rush
  • Blitz recognition needs work
  • Needs to check the ball down more
  • Field vision needs development
  • Needs to get quicker working through progressions

Those were some of his listed weaknesses coming out of college and you can find similar on other scouting reports. I haven't seen improvements in those areas.

Think you may have read those stats wrong.

Lamar, in his second season ONLY, has almost as many as Fields' entire career.

Even in the clip you posted is a perfect example of actually having an exorbitant amount of time by NFL standards. He hits his drop. Pats the ball. Then sees the rush and evades. If he'd just hit his drop and cut it loose he'd be fine. He had plenty of time. Same thing I said about him in Chicago when I continually pointed out he had the most time to throw in the league.

He needs to just let it rip.

Isn’t it possible be saw the DB bearing down towards the receiver and thought he could get more yards with his legs?

Making a bad judgement call isn’t the same as being unwilling to throw. In the moment he may have thought he had more room to run.

Still not ideal, but it’s just a suggestion that many narratives can be spun from watching a single play.

Sometimes the game is just too big in a players head. Fields has all the tools. Just looks like he is overthinking it and allowing the pressure to slow his game speed. Let it rip buddy.

Definitely!

Is it possible he's been seeing this for three straight years??

:sneaky:
Not every play is that play.

There was a stretch where Fields played winning football - it didn’t often show in the W column for the bears because they coughed up a bunch of leads, but for about 7-8 games they were an offensive powerhouse.

That’s still in his range of outcomes.

i know it’s more fun to make him the punchline, but he’s not an unskilled player. Steelers would be smart to see how much they can elevate him.

It's so silly though, it's a play-action pass and there's only two receivers running routes. Both are on the right side, one of them is wide open. It's not like it's a difficult read to make, he literally only needs to read one side of the field. You have two guys you're looking for and one is wide open. The safety isn't even on the screen at the time the wide receiver is running wide open, which means he's at least 15 yards away from the defender at that point. 75% of QB in this league are ripping the ball to the open receiver with no defender within 5 yards of him in any direction. It was the definition of a broken play, all that WR would have to do is beat a safety and it could have been a house call and we'd all be saying how awesome Justin Fields is.

Instead he then goes on to miss his check down option to the RB who leaks out that would have gotten more than the 2 yards he ends up rushing for. He had two players wide open and he didn't throw to either of them.

You can't defend that. You have two options to throw to, you already waited too long on the guy running downfield and then you decide not to dump it off either.

Something I find being left out of the Fields evaluation... the Bears did a piss poor job surrounding him with talent to make his development easier.

Now that they draft Caleb Williams the Bears appear intent on rectifying what they DIDN'T do for Fields. Yes, they traded for D.J. Moore a year ago. But that was a drop in the bucket as their WR room was still well below average. Acquiring Keenan Allen, D'Andre Swift, Gerald Everett and drafting Oduzne to go along with Moore and Kmet are MAJOR upgrades. Now they actually look like a competent NFL offensive skill group. Would have liked to have seen Fields with those weapons. Without a doubt, he would have fared better.

The Bears are giving Williams the chance they did not give Fields. Fields deficiencies aren't hard to pin down. But I'd also argue he had little to no help in Chicago beyond Moore and Kmet (meh). And that's not even touching the O-line. To be clear, I would say this about any young QB... Mac Jones, etc., name the guy. You have to protect them, first... but also give them skill players who can help them along in their progression to competent NFL QB play. And yes, a Mahomes can come along who can transcend some of this... but even in his early stages, having protection and weapons around him certainly benefitted his development.

It's not just that one play I posted though. I don't want to start spamming with 3 years worth of his film outlining the apparent deficiencies in his game that anyone can find online. Check QB school videos like vs GB last season.

I don't want to start spamming with 3 years worth of his film outlining the apparent deficiencies in his game that anyone can find easily, so I'll just post this last one from QB school that has multiple instances where he just does not pull the trigger on anticipation throws. The weaknesses outlined in his scouting reports are still prevalent today.

Stopped watching after dude clapped right after his intro.

Don't come at me with that NLP ####, bro!
