QB Justin Fields, NYJ (12 Viewers)

Can you expand on your thoughts here?

LOL.

I had quite a reckoning with my Jets fandom around early August (?) and it has lasted until at least today. I covered what I thought of this upcoming year and their past, present, and future direction in detail.

Honestly think Fields might be permanently broken. I said it when they signed him, but the Jets was probably the worst possible landing spot.
Did you want him to land a backup job? This was the best-case scenario. Unfortunately, he hasn't progressed enough and will end up as a journeyman backup moving forward.

Just a bad team for QB development. They are where young QBs go to die.

I feel like he's more... permanently "rookie" than broken. Not that I have seen every game he's played, but I can't recall him ever looking comfortable throwing the football or looking like he knew NFL offense and defense.

There was a span in Chicago where it started to click.

If Daniel Jones can turn it around and look like this, then maybe if you’re Fields you go and understudy with Shanahan, McVay, O’Connell, or Steichen, but you gotta work your *** off while you’re there or it does nobody any good.

Yep. Ain’t happening with the J-E-T-S though.

Terrible owner. Terrible GM. Terrible coach. I can’t listen to one more excuse about it as if we could give it time and that would get better. It won’t.

what are the scouts looking at when evaluating these guys? fields was in the zach wilson draft class if i’m not mistaken. was it that you couldn’t watch games live to evaluate? there must’ve been plenty of tape to figure out he simply can’t play or is it just a situation where the pro game is just that much harder than top college.

I "suppose" there is a flicker of light that says one day Justin Fields could have a Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold "rise from the ashes" moment, but right now it feels like that flicker of light is like that hole in the clouds at the end of Perfect Storm.

This is what we know - 1st stop, Bears, traded him away for a bag of chips... 2nd stop, Steelers, let him walk with literally no starting QB in the house (hoping Aaron Rogers would come visit)... 3rd stop, Jets, have the ball at mid-field w/ 0:30 to go before halftime in a tight ball game, after faking a punt to extend the possession, and they decide to just let the clock run out because they are terrified of what might happen if they let Fields execute a play.

Tough to defend that performance. But. It was agains the Broncos in London. Panthers and Bengals are the next two. Should be interesting.

Fields looked like a beast at Ohio St. - check out his performances in the college playoffs. Took shots, threw darts, scrambled around - Definitely had his issues like most prospects but looked the part of a franchise qb base potential. IMO like most QB busts he was never developed properly.

Looked serviceable in Pitt- whats the difference? They knew his strengths and weaknesses and played around both - Jets have shackled him and then give him plays where he cant succeed. Im not defending him - he's had his chances like Wilson but dont underestimate top coaching development with a consistent coaching staff

Also I wouldnt be shocked if he goes out and puts up solid numbers next week

When it comes to QBs, we can throw out the college highlight reel. Many of these guys play on super-dominant teams and 2/3 of their season are cupcakes. Once in the NFL, every team, especially on defense, is exponentially better than anything they faced in college. Grown men getting paid to ruin your life, the physical violence is different, and (reportedly) the verbal/mental abuse is very different. Quite simply - some guys just shrink up when exposed to that for the first time.

He was also throwing to Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, JSN, and Jameson Williams, which sure didn't hurt his tape

I feel like the Jets have shackled him. I'm not some Pro Fields guy. I've rostered, traded, dropped, and added Fields to my teams as much as any player. I think how I feel about him today is exactly how i felt about him in Chicago. Dude has the physical tools to be solid. Coaches are simply over coaching him. He is never gonna be this low turnover Aaron Rodgers type. Let him just take chances and rip it. You continue to shackle him and is isn't even a big play guy. It's pointless really.

completely agree - they are taking away what made him special. The guy isnt a drop back passer. Coaching is a big issue - no screens, no quick pass plays - drop back 6 steps every time.

Also it doesnt help he has literally no one to throw to - Wilson is usually great but he got Surtained which happens - but I watched a lot of the sacks and there was no one open at all. Whats the guy supposed to do - no one open, he doesnt want to throw a pick and it seems they are instructing him not to run and stay in pocket until the end.

Its a perfect storm - the guy is not great but he can easily be a serviceable QB with a solid coaching staff and roster. In Pitt he looked decent enough - in Jet land hes a mess. guess we shouldnt be shocked

I’d actually put better odds on Zack Wilson having the Sam/Baker redemption arc.

I don’t wish injury on Tua, but if Zack gets a shot in MIA I will be absolutely not surprised if he comes out balling.

Yeah, I said as much in the game topic - why even have Fields if you’re not going to let him play like his head’s on fire?

More often than not he’s gonna pull a rabbit out of his backside and either scramble to buy receivers time to get open, or be a threat to take one to the house.

If you’re trying to make Fields into a pocket passer, you might as well try off-roading in a Hyundai Elantra. Gotta play to a player’s strengths.

They came out in the 2nd half and Fields ran for like 20+ yards on 3 carries. Like they suddenly remembered they had Justin Fields. It’s bonkers.

Coach is enamored to be the guy who unlocked Fields as a passer.
That's not how it works.
You threaten the defense with Fields' rushing ability first. Then they have to play up. Then the back is open.
Fields has to rush 15 for 100 yards per game and throw on the run.

This is spot on. Some guys just "have it"... the 2.5 second clock in their head, and throw with anticipation based on their read of the defense. And then some just won't let it rip until they SEE the receiver coming open... which is usually too late in the NFL (busted coverages aside). Justin Herbert comes to mind... his first start was on 20 minutes notice in his rookie year IIRC? He came in and immediately looked like he knew how the plays were designed. We're seeing a little of this with Jaxson Dart in NYG. Caleb was a "hold onto it too long" guy, but I thing the coaching change is helping him... let's see tomorrow night.

Mmm, and what would we think of Caleb if he still wouldn't throw the ball on time THREE years from now? Will anyone have patience for him in year 5?

Thank you for that info. Watching the game live I was literally screaming at the TV like Duke Evers from Rocky IV except instead of screaming "Throw the damn towel!" I was screaming "Throw the damn ball!"

Yeah, I’m not sure Fields processes information quickly enough to be a decent starting QB. We wow about a QB’s arm and leg talent, but it’s really brain speed that differentiates the good ones from JAGs. Pre-snap recognition, reading coverage, going through progressions, getting the ball out on time, etc. You gotta be a fast thinker.

Note: This doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with intelligence (that is, I’m not saying he’s stupid). For example, I know a lot of super smart people with ADD, which is something that’s often caused by excess slow brain wave activity.

Caleb, 1st overall draft pick... he'll get as much time and repeated opportunities as he wants. Otherwise, everyone would have to admit that they were wrong about him.

I don't think it will happen though... I believe that Ben Johnson is showing Caleb what he did with Goff, and Caleb has every "physical" advantage over Goff, and he will become the superstar QB that everyone expected him to be...

...or not. Who knows?

That last part is insane. Speaks a lot more about the Jets coaches to me.

Late to the recent talks about week 6 tanking but everyone, all pass catchers on both sides stunk. Nix didn't do anything either. Weird game.

He should have walked off and screamed at Glenn and the OC for having him run out the clock with something like 30 seconds left in the half on the freakin 47 yard line. Most disgraceful, cowardly move I’ve ever seen. Just say you only want to lose by a little and don’t care about winning.

but what if no ones open which it seemed to me - assuming he has shackles and the coaching staff doesnt want him to run hes going to take a lot of sacks.....where was the adjustment? Screen? quick out on 2 steps, RPO - the lack of talent and coaching plan is just as much a part of that disaster as Fields himself.

assuming he has shackles and the coaching staff doesnt want him to run
What's this talk?

I've long been under the impression the reason he was hand picked by Glenn was because Fields ran wild on his Lions defenses.
Maybe it's the concussion but it feels like they've drawn up plays to utilized his legs less and less since he returned. This past week would have been the perfect game to get him out on the edges but they stubbornly called drop back passes with him. It was very, very confusing.

He’s had exactly 7 carries in 3 straight games.

I really don’t think they are trying to limit his running.

Not designing quicker and easier throws against Denver was coaching malpractice. That part I see, but I think he’s always got the green light to run.

HSG: Did I hear you say NYJ were QBs go to die. Same goes for Steelers Bell, Holmes, O'Donnell, Fanaca, Burress, to name a few

I think it's pretty known that I like Justin he has a few course corrections that he needs to accomplish. For now I don't think it's going to happen for him. He's had bad luck being drafted by the Bears, getting traded to the Steelers then signing with the Jets. If he gets another opportunity he needs to sign with an offensive minded head coach. If anything to take a step back becomes a backup in a shanahan offense or McVeigh. All of his head coaches have been defensive minded. Justin conversing with his defensive minded head coach is like a vegan chef trying to explain the versatility of tofu to Texas Pitmaster.

The craziest part is that it followed a rather gutsy call of a fake punt to pick up the 1st down and retain possession on their side of the field! It's almost like they thought the fake punt conversion was so successful... beyond their wildest dreams... that they all just stood there, like deer in the headlights, while the final 30 seconds ticked off the clock.

It was one of the weirdest sequences I have seen.

I'd like to see a breakdown of how many of those were sneaks/broken plays versus how many were designed runs. As a Jets fan watching it certainly didn't feel like getting him out on the edge was part of the gamelpan as i watched it live.

Nah. I mean, I could say don’t go to San Francisco unless you want to wind up being out half of the year every year if you’re a starter.

If you’re ready as a QB, you’ll be average as a Jet.

Darnold is in his seventh year and this is the first year ANYBODY intended to have him start.

Geno’s time playing for both NY teams and his start in LV leads one to believe that Seattle ADDS twenty QBR points given what Russ did when he left.

If you’re going to reiterate this about the organizations, I’ll have this on recall and cut and paste. That goes for anybody’s org.
