QB Mac Jones, SF (2 Viewers)

Yeesh. Just saw the video of Jones getting the stiff arm. Wow. Embarrassing. I don't know if the Sanchez Butt Fumble was more embarrassing or this.

C.Jones looked like he was stiff arming a child.

I don’t really care about him getting trucked by a tank although it is funny. He just seems to be constantly chirping and always pissed about something but then when he has a chance to make a play he misses guys that are WIDE open. It’s one thing if you can make the plays and are frustrated with others but if you consistently fail to make the plays that you should be making you just need to shut up. I have to imagine people are just tuning him out at this point…I know I would. You can’t have Brady’s attitude if you can’t make the plays…not a recipe for long term success IMO.

I know what you are seeing, and it isn't pretty, but the word locally is his ire is totally directed at the coaching staff and the players are onboard with him because they all know how inept they are (and they have been somewhat vocal about it)...that being said he is not playing well either, so it makes it that much worse.

Ya, the play calling/late play calling clearly seems to be a big issue which is understandable but you have to try and compartmentalize. I can understand though how it would screw up your rhythm during the game. BB is a hell of a coach but this Patricia thing seemed dumb from the start and the evidence seems to back it up.

He does seem to point fingers quickly.

He is becoming what we thought he was when in college. Just a game manager QB who is onyl really effective when his team is bullying the opposition everywhere else, Meantime Bill is trying to build an offense around him - a rare mistake from him.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would not comment on whether or not Mac Jones will start the final three weeks of the season.

"Yeah, the plan is to try to beat Cincinnati," was Belichick's response when asked about Jones on Wednesday. The 2022 version of "we're on to Cincinnati" echoes the frustrations Belichick and company are likely feeling this season, especially after an embarrassing loss to the Raiders in which jones threw for 112 yards while completing just 41.9 percent of his passes. If Belichick is to bench Jones at any point this season, he would pivot back to rookie Bailey Zappe, who became a fan-favorite during his brief stint as the team's starter earlier this season. Those banking on Jones being active in 2QB and superflex leagues would be wise to have a contingency plan in place should Belichick pull the plug on Jones during the fantasy playoffs.

It would be very Belichickian if Bill put Jones on IR for some trumped up injury. That way, it could look like he was forced to go back to Zappe instead of just benching Jones, and Mac would be shut down for the season. But I don't think Bill would just flat-out bench Jones at this point. I wouldn't be shocked if it happened, I just don't think he would actually do it.

I would like to see Zappe start one of the last 3 games…it may not be all Mac’s fault but the O is not happening with him…start Zappe without any streamlining and see what happens.

Found this interesting... a little confusing in that he mentions Josh Allen who obviously isn't affected negatively by this, and also doesn't mention Zach Wilson who seems to be.

“I heard you talking earlier about the Mac Jones body language,” Crowder said on FS1’s “The Herd.” “It’s called affluenza. [If] you’ve been given too much, you have too much money, you’re a little different. I was around a bunch of rich dudes growing up and I played with rich guys. They just have this little demeanor and you know it gets to you. You brought up Jay Cutler. I would bring up Josh Allen in this conversation. Kyler Murray was a trust fund baby.”

MassLive's Mark Daniels reports Mac Jones is "very excited" to work with new Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

Jones and O'Brien overlapped briefly at Alabama, where Jones worked with O'Brien during the pre-draft process in 2021 and helped O'Brien learn the ins and outs of Alabama's offensive system. O'Brien served as New England's offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2011, before he landed the Texans head coaching position. "Considering O’Brien learned Josh McDaniels’ system first, he now can mix and match the Patriots former system and Alabama’s current offense," Daniels said. "That should create an offense that best fits Jones’ skill set." Jones took a major step back in 2022 following a hopeful rookie campaign. How much of that can be pinned on former OC Matt Patricia is up for debate.

this is pretty bullish for NE offense. BOB was way overmatched in Houston, but he's a good offensive coach.
BOB was in NE for 5 seasons. The Pats scored 500+ points in three of them (and another 550+ the year after he left). How much credit we want to allocate to him vs. Brady / Moss / Welker / Gronk / McDaniels / etc. is open for debate. But there's no doubt the offense was generally in a good state when he was around.

Good hire...I think he is being a bit overrated around here because of how bad last year was but he is a solid, professional OC...this was step 1 (and the most important one) but there is still a ton of work to do on the offense if they are gonna start competing with the top dogs in the AFC...the O line (tackle in particular) needs to be upgraded, they need a legit #1 WR and they could use more depth at TE and possibly RB...the good news is with O'Brien by the end of 2023 you will know whether Mac is the long term answer or if they will need to look elsewhere.

We've been banging this drum for awhile now. Not sure RB is an area of need compared to the others and other position groups. If DHarris moves on, Stevenson, Strong, and KHarris should be capable of handling the majority of the workload. I've seen several media guys suggest they need to add or develop a James White type back, but I am not sure they need that. White with Brady was lethal, but the play calling was very predictable. This season, they had more variety in terms of pass / run calls with the guys they mixed and matched in the backfield. I guess if we had a to do list, a true third down, pass catching specialist might be on the list somewhere . . . but it would be pretty far down the list.

BOB will forever get flack for moving away from Hopkins and getting a moldy ham sandwich in return. He did get a lot out of Moss / Welker / Gronk / Hernandez / BJGE / Woodhead in his time with NE. He certainly helped Hopkins get on the map and got Fuller to be productive (when he was able to play). Who knows how much he developed Deshaun Watson, but Watson looked way better under BOB then he did this year in CLE.

If Harris moves on and Stevenson gets hurt that could turn into a serious deficiency...O line and WR are far bigger needs, but they could use one more back just in case Strong and/or Harris aren't the answer...they should be able to accomplish this with a low-cost veteran FA or a mid-to later pick...as for the James White type of back it is not the need it once was since Stevenson is good in the passing game...I'd like to see them add another RB with home-run hitting ability...the team just needs more playmakers that defenses have to account for.

Strong averaged 10 ypc in limited use for NE last year and 7.2 ypc in college to go along with a 4.37 40 time. Not sure if that is enough playmaking ability for you or not. I agree finding a cheap but capable RB is always on BB's list, but again, they have much bigger fish to fry than figuring out who their 4th RB should be.

maybe it’s the three beers talking but I’m one tier above ‘cautiously optimistic’ about bob. Tried talking myself into the dumpster fire of Matt P / J Judge and.. let’s face it, all we have is hope. 😂

Jones looked like an NFL qb in 2021. Let’s see if bob can get us back there. A little worried that myers might be gone. As mediocre as he is, he’s been their most reliable wr for 2 years.

Maybe bob can more effectively integrate Bourne and Smith into the passing game. Good lord, couldn’t be much worse.

They do...and I think I have been far more vocal about needing those bigger fish about that than you have been in the post-Brady era...that being said I think adding another RB is not simply a throw away...if Stevenson goes down, I am just not comfortable with just having Strong and Harris...the last thing they need is for their rushing O to take a big step backwards.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Patriots QB Mac Jones is expected to be the team’s starter next season.

Second-year backup Bailey Zappe will get a shot to compete this offseason, but it's expected to be Jones' job to lose. This doesn't come as a surprise after the Patriots hired OC Bill O'Brien, who coached at Alabama and is close to Jones. With O'Brien calling plays and Zappe pushing to start, Jones is entering a make-or-break 2023.

ESPN's Dan Graziano reports there is "some chatter" that Las Vegas might try to trade for Mac Jones.

Graziano added, "it seems unlikely New England would consider moving the 2021 first-rounder." We tend to agree as the move would leave the Patriots in the position of needing to hit on another quarterback, restarting the process all over again. Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels worked with Jones in New England, making a potential transition easy for the third-year quarterback. A far more likely outcome would be the Raiders signing Jimmy Garoppolo. McDaniels has also worked with him before and Garoppolo would be far cheaper than Jones, only costing a contract that will likely come in at roughly $30 million per year. It's a pricey deal, but most teams would find that more palatable than the picks required to get Jones away from the Patriots. As Graziano notes, Aaron Rodgers remains the top option for the Raiders. Garoppolo would only come into play if Rodgers lands elsewhere.

Patriots HC Bill Belichick was non-committal about Mac Jones starting in 2023.

Belichick was asked whether or not Jones would be in a quarterback competition with Bailey Zappe, to which he responded, "Everybody will get a chance to play. We'll play the best players." Zappe saw a brief rise to stardom last season when he started two games for the injured Jones, leading the Patriots to a 2-0 record while throwing for 497 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in those two starts. It's not farfetched to think Zappe could earn the starting job in camp after Jones struggled in his second season. Still, Jones will hold the inside edge given his first-round pedigree and familiarity with new offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

To be fair, BB was non-committal to Tom Brady when asked the same question on a number of occasions. Bill just doesn't usually do that (with the rare exception being Cam Newton).

NBC Sports' Tom Curran believes Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was "agitated" with Mac Jones for seeking outside help in 2022.

Belichick was reportedly unhappy with Jones' constant on-field screaming and gesticulating, and was particularly put off by Jones going outside the team for "counsel" on how to improve New England's lifeless offense. "That really pissed Bill off," Curran said. "Disloyalty, I think, in Bill's mind, is almost worse than bad play." Seeking advice from outside Patriots headquarters was widely seen as showing up Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, a bumbling duo with no previous offensive experience before inexplicably taking charge of the team's offense last offseason. Last week, Belichick refused to commit to Jones as New England's 2023 starter, opening the door for a training camp battle between Jones and Bailey Zappe, who has limited success in two 2022 starts. While Jones is clearly the superior option, he's going to have to get back into Belichick's good graces in the coming months.

I guess there isn't much to report on these days. A lot of the off season chatter has been stuff that has been hashed, rehashed, and re-rehashed from 6 months ago. Not sure why the media needs to report on things all over again. The other takeaway this offseason is a lot of the Boston media is campaigning for the ouster of BB. There have always been a few people driving that narrative, but now it seems like there is a majority of Boston sports media eager for NE to move on from Bill.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports the Patriots have shopped Mac Jones to several teams.

A full list of potential suitors for Jones isn't yet know. Florio said the Patriots have talked with the Raiders, Texans, Buccaneers, and Commanders about Jones this offseason, and that a trade could still happen. "The Raiders are the ones to keep watching," Florio said. "Jimmy Garoppolo‘s contract lands in the low-end of middle class for starters, and Jones has two years left under a slotted rookie deal, before his fifth-year option would apply." Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was reportedly "agitated" with Jones for his on-field tantrums during the 2022 season and for seeking outside help in improving the struggling Pats offense. "That really pissed Bill off," NBC Sports' Tom Curran said. It's possible the Patriots would take a quarterback in the 2023 draft if they deal Jones, as Bailey Zappe doesn't profile as anyone's idea of a long-term starter.

Something similar happened after Miami's 1995 season with a 9-7 record. Finished 3rd in the AFC East, lost to the Bills in the playoffs where BUF rushed for over 300 yards. Some say Shula was pushed out by Jimmy Johnson who was a hot coach in waiting. Is there a better choice in NE ... maybe Payton but he's no longer available.

Before FA started I was mulling stuff over and for a few reasons thought to myself if NE traded Mac to the Raiders and signed Jimmy G it would not surprise me.

I figured it's to late now, and it is if JG has a no trade clause he does not want to waive, but I just checked his contract breakdown and there has been no upfront bonus paid, he can be traded for zero dead money.

@Anarchy99

"I guess there isn't much to report on these days"

-Oh really?

I expect that this is a case of due diligence. I have heard many times that NE (likely most teams) keep tabs of who is available throughout the league, throw some names around, and generally stir the pot to see if there is interest across the league that they may not have expected. I doubt the Pats are married to Jones, but I also doubt they are actively trying to move him. It's more like, "If we were ready to move on from Mac, what might you offer us?"

I will absorb what gets reported the next couple of days and report back.
First two paragraphs sum it up for me. Unless they did go after Jackson it makes zero sense to move off Mac now. What’s the alternative?

That's the big question...it is pretty obvious there is some type of disconnect between BB and Mac...but if you want to move on from him who do you bring in...if BB deals Mac (who I am still not sold on) and the QB position and team takes a step backwards with his replacement the BB era will be over in Foxboro.

Tank for Caleb Williams?
Don’t worry, be Zappe might get the job done.

I just want him to get the start so I can sell him.

The BB era was over once Tom Brady left and the rest of the AFC East finally drafted good QBs after two decades of collective futility. Well except for the Jets...
