He seems good at progressing through reads. No doubt this week they will work on him throwing ball away if nothing develops. It was inevitable. The Brady comparisons have started. Charlie Weiss said today that Jones is further along at this point than Brady was. Doesn’t mean he will turn into Brady, but Mac’s knowledge and understanding is greater than Brady after his first training camp. Making reads and making adjustments at the LOS.
Well, the guy that called him Mac and cheese can be hired easy enough.
Mac Jones completed 28-of-39 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots' 17-16, Week 1 loss to the Dolphins.
It was a solid debut for Jones against an elite defense, as he counteracted the Dolphins' pressure by getting the ball out quickly. That was what coach Bill Belichick wanted to see. What BB did not want to see was Jones' fifth play from scrimmage, where he panicked trying to spin out of a sack and turfed the ball for a fumble. The Patriots managed to recover for a nine-yard loss. Thankfully, that moment was the exception and not the rule for a 23-year-old who looked plenty poised making the jump from the SEC West to AFC East. Jones gets an easier test in Week 2 against the Jets, though Gang Green's defensive line is not to be trifled with. With his weapons still sorting themselves out, Jones is a low-ceiling superflex option.
More so than any other team, NE is game plan / opponent specific. I think they didn’t want to overwhelm and expose Jones in his first game. They had to change up the OL a few times with guys getting dinged, which didn’t help any. Overall, any NE fan should have been thrilled with what Jones showed.Jones stats could've been a little better if not for a holding penalty negating a 32 yard deep pass to Bourne and a ~30 yard pass over the middle tipped away at the last second by Jason McCourty. The same for Tua who had a potential TD to Wilson tipped away at the last second and a drop by Waddle on a 20 yard crossing pattern. Jones converted multiple 3rd downs on three 14-play scoring drives. A lot of short passes to the open guy, reacting to blitzes and I'm guessing presnap reads. A lot of it is scheme, think Garropolo who also got rid of the ball quickly during his brief play in NE. The floor is Jimmy, which is not bad, the ceiling is Brady-like. They need to let him attempt more deep balls IMO, it's not easy to have 14 play drives. They need to move the pocket at times, otherwise he's a sitting duck for a team with a better pass rush than Miami, who only has one good pass rusher, as most of their pressure comes from blitzes. I think he was only sacked once, but got hit hard on a few pressures.
He'll have some easier defenses in coming weeks. Miami has 4 good CBs, Howard, Jones, Needham and McCourty who's playing safety. Jones took advantage of his TEs later, they should've used them earlier. Him arm is good enough to attempt a few more long passes to Agholor and Bourne in the next game vs the Jets. Jones will then face 2 more top defenses in NO and TB. Miami Herald writer Barry Jackson did an analysis last year showing that it usually takes about 5 games to know if a QB will be successful in the modern era, there need to be a few good games. Jones has 1 under his belt.More so than any other team, NE is game plan / opponent specific. I think they didn’t want to overwhelm and expose Jones in his first game. They had to change up the OL a few times with guys getting dinged, which didn’t help any. Overall, any NE fan should have been thrilled with what Jones showed.
His selling points are recognizing coverages, getting the ball out quickly, accurate throws, and making good decisions (backwards passes not withstanding). Clearly he is not a dual threat like many other QBs these days, so we’ll have to see if the more traditional pocket passer is still a viable option in today’s NFL. If his blocking holds up, the chances are he’ll deliver a catchable ball.
Mac Jones completed 30-of-51- passes for 270 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions in the Patriots' Week 3 loss to the Saints.
Jones ended up the Patriots' leading rusher with six carries for 28 yards. This was a shaky game from Jones, who had an interception returned inside New England’s 10-yard line at the end of the first half and was pick-sixed on opening drive of the third quarter. Jones was able to find the end-zone on a back-shoulder fade to Kendrick Bourne after getting held without a touchdown last week, but there weren't many positives in a game the Patriots trailed throughout. Jones has averaged 246 yards with a 2:3 TD/INT ratio through the first three games. He'll get another tough test in a matchup with Tom Brady and the Bucs in Week 4.
