QB Patrick Mahomes II, KC (1 Viewer)

He needs better weapons in the future. Looked terrible without Kelce looking All-Pro in the past. or without Tyreek.
Worthy and rice could be a good combo. Hopkins isn’t the guy he once was, but I think the line looks like a higher priority. Or maybe the Eagles were just that good?

Agreed. Mahomes was still all-world on a consistent basis after Tyreek left, but I don't think it's a coincidence that his overall play has not been the same the last two years since Father Time has started to catch Kelce.

That was his SB line vs TB 4 years ago, and it didn't tarnish a thing. It was just another game like last night where the line got outclassed leaving him zero time to process anything. No QB will ever succeed getting that type of pressure vs a 4 man rush. In all 3 SB losses, Tom Brady was pressured more than in any of his SB wins. That's how you beat the best QBs in history.

I will preface this by saying that Mahomes is obviously great, but I think it goes without saying that many want to annoint Mahome as the GOAT regardless of what happens. He is still 4 Super Bowl wins behind him, he was 0-2 vs Brady in the playoffs including in a Super Bowl (head to head stuff like that matters to most more than it should), and he already has thrown more INTs in the Super Bowl (7) than Brady (6) despite having played in half as many so far. He has a long way to go to catch Brady.

Not everyone can play with the best wr in the league, his weapons aren't bad, comparable to what Allen and Jackson have.

Agree with all of this. One curb stomping by a better team doesn't derail their accomplishments and talent.

I think they have weapons with Worthy and Rice even with Father Time having caught up to Kelce. Could use a bit more depth though if Rice is suspended and Brown/Hopkins/Juju probably not coming back. Also a more consistent running game may help, but there should be plenty of options late in the draft.

Many are focusing on Mahomes' declining fantasy stats over the past two years, but a lot of it has to do that he doesn't need to air it out like he used to.

He and the Defense willed this team to this point. The KC offense is not good. The Bills and Ravens were better teams and would have made this a great SB. Props to Mahomes for doing enough to get them by this season. They are old on line, and need many personnel changes to get back again.

It also has a lot to do with the defensive coordinator of the Eagles, who introduced the NFL to the way to make Mahomes human again. Cover two and don't get beat deep. Don't blitz. Send seven guys in coverage if he's going to throw. That's how you beat Mahomes.

And I know it was garbage time, but the Chiefs still racked up 22 points in the end because QB can flat-out still play. That was a dime to Worthy for the third score.

10 years from now, we'll probably look back and say Mahomes had a good game based on his stats.

I won’t. Eagles d gets credit for being great but those interceptions were so awful. He made it easy for them. And that was the end of the game at that point.

Clearly the offensive line is a problem and contributed to both picks but Pat can’t make those 2 throws, and not the only problem for Veach/Reid to fix this offseason.

Mahomes weapons weren't the problem last night, it was his line. The Eagles were getting pressure with 4 guys all night. If the Chiefs want to get back here, they need to fix the line first, not the weapons.

I seem to remember that's the way the Giants were able to beat Tom Brady in two Super Bowls. People seem to forget that even great QBs are dependent on good OL play.

Exactly.

Mahomes still has a ways to go vs. Brady.

Ironic Mahomes has arguably his worst game of his career...with Tom Brady on the mic.

That’s some serious Mahomes love there. He was terrible. Anyone who watched the game saw that. It happens to even the best players sometimes.

Very good pass on the last TD but backup DBs in the game. That’s why it’s called “garbage time”.

Would have been a good drinking game based on how many times Brady said he did lose 3, but happened to win 7.
Yeah, hard not to laugh at Brady patting himself on the back all game. But yeah, you would nave a massive hangover this morning if you had played that game.
Still wish it was Greg Olsen in his place, but that's for another discussion.

I'm not reading that stupidity. If the Chiefs went on a three-peat, they would have had to be in the discussion for all-time great dynasties. They didn't. But that drivel is click bait.

Same stuff they said after the Tampa Bay Super Bowl when his line was just avalanched all game. Sacks are a QB stat, too, but not last night, nor in that TB game. They revamped after Tampa and they'll do the same this time with the line.

"Being blown out in the Super Bowl" is going farther than 94% of the league. I don't care if it's 73-0 -- a season in which your team makes it to the Super Bowl is never a negative on your resume.

Not as stupid as Stephan A Smith's take that Mahomes would be the GOAT if he won yesterday.

We'll see a lot more of this today.

That only works if the 4 man rush can get to guys like Brady and Mahomes, or else they'll just tear you apart. The Giants did it twice to Brady.

The second throw he got hit during release, so I don't put too much into it. The first throw was all Mahomes trying too hard.

People putting Mahomes in the conversation of GOAT were jumping the gun. That's a lot more left to do for Mahomes to get there. To me it's

Brady

Montana
Mahomes

the rest of the greats
Putting Mahomes as the GOAT was just an unhinged take, can he get there yes but he's got a ways to go and who knows what will happen over the next 6, 8, 10 years.

I like that list but as great as Montana was, I can't think of anyone else who had the type of HOF support he did. Guys like Craig, Taylor, Rice on the same offense don't come around too often.

Having said that, those 2 belong in the same tier below Brady.

Eagles def backed off. Could have embarrased them worse if they wanted

The frustrating part of that game was Andy Reid.

Repeatedly having Mahomes in deep drops while your line is getting caved in is coaching lunacy.

Quick step drops. Slants. Dump the ball in the flat. Move the pocket. Run some RPO's and get Mahomes moving off the snap. Give him a safety valve.

Instead all I saw were deep drops and long routes. Mahomes played like dog crap but his coaching staff let him down big time yesterday.

Mahomes is still on a path which could lead him to being considered the second greatest quarterback in NFL history.

But, two awful performances in the Super Bowl combined with an 0-2 heads-up playoff record against Tom Brady means it's going to be very difficult to surpass Brady in the GOAT rankings.

Kind of like Tiger Woods chasing Jack Nichlaus, until it isn't. You never know what can happen through one's career.

That's true on the 2nd INT, he was getting hit. It just was very frustrating as that was game over at that moment.

Is he the GOAT? Certainly not yet. I will definitely refrain from that use even though it was partially satire/homerism on my part. I will say we are collectively judging him against the best ever though and he is stacking up just fine so far.

Reid did this 4 years ago as well when TB were swarming on every drop back. How much is on Nagy and/or Reid I'm not sure, but they never even tried to adjust to it.

Even if they did adjust though, I just think Philly dominated the trenches to the point that any game plan was going to get wrecked.

This.

Reid & Co. are typically the "creme de la creme" of adjustment-ing. They did not adjust well at all this game.

MVP of the game was Fangio. He put on a master class last night.

Yup. Reid.

After the first series I said to a buddy of mine "I bet Reid doesn't run the ball the rest of the game." Totally bagged the running game which he's done in the past.

If there is one knock on Reid it has to be his stubbornness of relying far too much on Mahomes to mask their offensive weaknesses, especially with protection. I've seen this a few times in the past, and again last night. They will abandon the run game and keep asking him to drop back the same way time after time hoping the outcome changes. Not even Brady would change last night's outcome with that protection, but I'm sure Hoodie would have tried something different at some point.

The interior of this line is fine, but KC desperately needs two solid bookends.

Been their weak link since Fisher tore his Achilles against Buffalo in the AFC championship 5 years ago. KC was starting backups at both LT & RT against Tampa and they ate them alive. Got by with bandaids the last few years but it burned them last night. They rebuilt their defense and have added new weapons, have to move Thuney back to guard where he’s an All-Pro and majorly address Left Tackle this offseason to keep their engine humming.

100%.

at the NFL level most QB are good enough to pick apart a defense if they actually have time to throw the ball. so once you have a QB that qualifies as 'good enough', the focus needs to be in improving the line and getting playmakers for that QB.

it still amazes me how many NFL teams will bring in a rookie QB and put them behind a leaky line. or with no good WR to throw to. its just not a recipe for success. people then discard the QB and draft a new one and repeat the same flawed process that ruined the first QB.

it is (in my opinion) very important to have a good line for a young QB to play behind. Not many QB out there are good enough to perform behind a bad line. Thats a fact. and this game showed that this applies even to QB like Mahomes. A QB under pressure makes mistakes. Thats the bottom line. you gotta force those mistakes on D or prevent them on Offense.

Kelce looked old and slow last night, and he still looks heavy and out of shape. Living the party life with Swift caught up to him this year. Although I would do the same.

A combination for sure. 35 and visibly out of shape is a bad combo.

Time to retire but I can see him fooling himself that he can eke out another year.

I love Reid, but their strategy for this game was poor. The best way to stop a pass rush is to run at it. They ran 3 times in the first half and 7 in total. That's horrendous. Even if you go 2 yards, at least make them have to play it to slow the DL down. Without the INTs it could have easily been PHI 10-0 at the half. And those INTs were bad, but caused by an OL that was awful. Reid has to do better.

Brady was 0-3 in SBs where he faced a pressure rate of 40% and above.

If you exclude garbage time vs backups, Mahomes is 0-2 with a pressure rate above 50%.

Just shows that many tend to read into things too much, but the obvious fact remains that a 4 man pass rush that gets there at a 40% clip or above with 7 in coverage simply cannot be beat.

I'll add that Brady was a lucky ******* too (in addition to being great).

-Seattle calls the worst play ever to give him one win. Hate the Seahawks so was happy they did

-Atlanta melts down and blows a 28-3 halftime lead to give them another win. Granted, Pats were phenomenal on both sides of the ball the 2nd half, but a total clusterfock for Atlanta on both sides of the ball and that team was too good for that to happen.
