QB Russell Wilson, NYG (1 Viewer)

Russell Wilson (concussion) will return to Broncos practice Thursday and participate in a limited capacity.

It gives Wilson a chance to get cleared for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after he was held out of Wednesday's practice. He still has a ways to go in the concussion protocol, but in general, concussed players who practice in any capacity tend to end up playing. That is the norm, but hardly an iron-clad rule. If Wilson does go, he will be a bottom-barrel QB2 with Courtland Sutton (hamstring) remaining on the shelf.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said Russell Wilson (concussion) is "full go" this week.

It's safe to assume Wilson will be listed as a full participant on all three practice reports before playing on Sunday. Wilson missed Week 15 with a concussion despite being cleared for action prior to kickoff. The team held him out as a precaution. Closing out a lost season as his first year in Denver, Wilson is not on the fantasy radar for Week 16.

The Broncos don't *have* to keep Russell Wilson. There is a strong case to cut him with a post June-1 designation, swallow your cap medicine and move on.
I'd expect some coaching candidates to make that case.
@greggrosenthal@greggrosenthal
Broncos are retaining GM George Paton, who made the Russ trade. That makes a release less likely. But if the Falcons can eat $40 million dead cap to trade Matt Ryan, the Broncos can eat Wilson's guarantees.

According to http://Overthecap.com, Wilson’s dead cap hit for 2023 would be $107,000,000 for pre June-1st cut but only $39 mil for a post June-1st cup.
Could you explain the reason for this? I don’t really understand.

Not happening. Not following what the strong case to cut him is. Yes he's been awful and this year has been a disaster but for what they gave up for him they're not going to give up on him without making at least one attempt to fix it with a different coach.

This is unfortunately true.

I know they have the richest owners in the league now but does anyone have faith in a HC search that’s being led guided by Rice?

I am not opposed to having Russ on the squad... but with that contract? No way!

I realize this is a fantasy but I'd support EITHER a huge renegotiating of that contract downward and without all that guaranteed money OR (ha!) cutting him, eating the cap hit and then bringing him back at perhaps $1M year or with most of the salary legitimate performance-based incentives.

His teammates hate him
do we have proof of this?
Tons of info out there from both ex and current players. Just google Russell Wilson teammates dislike him.

Wilson + Kyler Murray + Deshaun Watson... lots of $$$ spent for 3 QBs that will be watching the playoffs from home.

Lamar Jackson next to cash in.

I can't believe it. I started the year with Russell Wilson, dropped him like a lead balloon after 4-5 weeks in, and now picking him up to play him in a league where we go 18 weeks. I do have one roster pick up left though for this week. Is it Stidham my other choice.

Agreed completely. When I was in school I remember specifically talking about charities and there very low "rate at which donations were returned to the targeted population." I went away thinking this is something I will pay attention to when donating in the future. There were some organizations in the 90% and thought that will be where I donate moving forward. Now 90% is very high and an outlier. But to put no context behind the fact that 24.3% is around the average it screams hit piece.

Guy just signed a $250M contract, seems a bit absurd to think he's trying to bilk a few hundred thousand from charitable donations.

This is logical thinking, and Benjamin Albright made this point as well.

But it's incorrect in the assumption that people will not steal what they don't need. See: Danny Snyder.

Rich people steal stuff they don't need. It certainly looks like Ciara and Russell had one of their assistants on the charity payroll.

Absolutely a hit piece. The guy who did the "investigating" should be castigated for not knowing the part about partners accounting for contributions that the Wilson charity helped to generate. That is fundamental to the "story."

How is it a hit piece? Facts are facts. By their own tax filings, they showed multiple years of only giving out around 25% of their money to charities. That by itself is borderline criminal, and no one should ever give to a charity that does that horribly.

Wilson should send 90% of his paycheck to Marshawn Lynch and the SEA Defense. Those are the guys that made them good. Wilson so overrated.
Remind me again what the Seahawks record was with Lynch and the defense before Wilson arrived?

Here I will do it for you: Once Lynch arrived in Seattle in 2010, they went 12-16 before Wilson arrived.

They went 11-5 in the first season with Wilson as the starter.

The math is easy.

Tarvaris Jackson was Seattle's QB before Wilson got there. He was...awful.

Lynch and the D had tons to do with Seattle's success, but let's not pretend Russell didn't play his own part.
I'm a Seahawk fanatic. I've watched all but 3 or 4 of their regular season and playoff games since 1976. As far as the reasons for their success during those Super Bowl seasons, I'd rank the defense #1 by a large margin, then Lynch but then Wilson a close 3rd.

He was key to those offenses back when he actually was quick and more mobile. I've felt for the past 5-6 years that he came into the season 15-20lbs overweight for what he needed to do from the QB position. He still is. When defenses didn't have to worry nearly as much about his running his production took a big downturn. Granted, part of that is he is getting older but if he comes into next season slimmer again you will see a major improvement from the past few. And I'm not talking about last season, which was an abomination and hopefully an aberration.

I'm rooting for him again now that Seattle no longer has Denver's 1st and 2nd round draft picks on the line. I hope he turns it around and think he just might, especially with the new coaching staff.

Glad to hear that. Clearly Vegas trusts Sean Payton and thinks Russell will bounce back.

And they have a great defense.

The Athletic reports Russell Wilson in February 2022 asked Seahawks ownership to fire head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

It's a bombshell allegation -- one that Wilson quickly denied in a Twitter post following The Athletic's damning report of his final season in Seattle and his first disastrous year in Denver. Wilson wanted Carroll replaced by Sean Payton, according to The Athletic. Wilson was reportedly "convinced that Carroll and Schneider were inhibiting his quest to win additional Super Bowls and individual awards" and was frustrated by Carroll's conservative offensive approach. It seems Carroll understood better than anyone that Wilson is more of a game manager than a quarterback who can singlehandedly carry a team to championships. That Wilson wanted Payton to take over in Seattle could be a good sign that Wilson will follow Payton's lead in 2023 after reportedly being detached from his coaches and teammates in 2022. Rotoworld's Denny Carter outlined how Payton might get the most out of a declining Wilson this season.

The Athletic reports Russell Wilson in February 2022 asked Seahawks ownership to fire head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

The Broncos gave Wilson an office at the team facility, a rare perk (Wilson did not have an office in Seattle and Heaps had only limited access to the Seahawks’ facility). Several Broncos veterans said they didn’t mind Wilson having his own office, especially because the quarterback spent so much time at the facility.

“He’s got a whiteboard, the sides of the wall, and it’s just littered with (motivational) quotes and new play concepts,” receiver Kendall Hinton said. “It was crazy to see his mind thrown out on the (wall).”

Running back Melvin Gordon said the TV in Wilson’s office was always tuned to NFL Network. “It was just strictly football,” Gordon said. “Anybody could go to his office, and he was like, ‘Hey, if you want to learn extra plays, you want to go over this, you want to go over that?'”

But from the outside, the existence of the office worked against Wilson when his on-field play failed to measure up. And the location of the office — on the facility’s second floor, where Broncos coaches and executives also worked — created an unusual team dynamic.

“The players were always on the first floor; they never really came up to the second floor,” one coach said. “If you came up to the second floor as a player, it honestly wasn’t a good thing because you were probably getting released.”

One offensive player said Wilson told teammates he had an “open-door policy” with his office, which to another coach seemed problematic. “So, are you a coach or are you a player?” the coach asked. “Your open door should be you sitting at your locker.”

Tuesdays are typically players’ only off days during game weeks, but Wilson asked the offense to meet with him at the team facility for “state of the union” meetings, something he also did in Seattle. Broncos guard Dalton Risner said Wilson had the offense “watch film on the next opponent and kind of come to an agreement on what they’re running … and what we can do to beat them.”

While some players grumbled about the meetings, several said they were helpful and well-attended. Risner said the meetings showed the “type of leader Russell is and what he’s willing to do for his team.”

Early in the season, without much Denver film to go on, Wilson occasionally showed clips from his time with the Seahawks. “It was kind of like he was going down memory lane with stuff he’d done in Seattle,” said one offensive player. “It was very strange some weeks.”

:lmao:

Two days before the Broncos played the 4-10 Rams on Christmas, Denver running back Latavius Murray texted Sean Payton, his former coach in New Orleans, Payton recalled during a Super Bowl-week appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

According to Payton’s account, Murray said, “Hey, my backfield teammate and I hope you come to Denver.” Payton said he was confused and thought about the other running backs on the Broncos’ roster before finally asking Murray who he was talking about.

Murray responded, “No. 3,” according to Payton: Wilson’s number.

Weird dude. So glad the Eagles did not make a play for this loser.
