QB Situation in Zona (1 Viewer)

Kolb trade looking like a HUGE mistake right now and things likely won't get any easier against Pit this week. How much leash does Kolb have? Any chance that if he doesn't improve there might be a QB battle between him and Skelton this offseason? Any chance he gets benched this year?

So he's a franchise failure after five games? Cards traded a good defensive back and a second round pick for Kolb, he'll get every opportunity to succeed/fail.

Skelton isn't the second string QB in Arizona right now; Richard Bartel is (and he looked terrific during the preseason).

Zero and None - The Cardinals thought when they made the trade that this was the guy who would be a very good NFL quarterback and be their starter for years. They still think he has the talent to do that although they may certainly wish that he had a better grasp of the offense and was more comfortable out there. In fairness it is a totally different system than he came from (where he didn't have that many starts anyway) and there was very little time for him to learn it all. BUT not all the problems are Kolb and they are committed to him and if this season is learning on the job they will have to deal with it.

I think it would take an injury for Kolb not to be the starter for every game this year - hopefully next year they have a better defense and a better offensive line in front of him - but he will still be the starter.

Where are you getting this info?Cards site and rotoworld has Skelton as #2http://www.azcardinals.com/team/depth-chart.htmlI know Bartel went in when Kolb was pulled, but thought that was because of ankle injury to Skelton...

Skelton has been inactive the last 3 games despite not being listed on the injury report (he was active along with Bartel in week 2, so he is clearly healthy enough to play). Even though the stats may look similar, he was thoroughly outplayed by Bartel in the preseason.

Has he even had 10 NFL starts yet?
actually I think he has 12, but this is the 1st time with 5 in a row. However, it's pretty obvious that the whole team is playing bad. Another case of QB gets too much/little credit.I'm sure he'll turn it on before the end of the season because the Cards will keep riding him until he gets the offense figured out and gets comfortable

You know who looked terrific in last year's preseason? Max Hall. And that turned out to be a disaster.I think we can stop with the "[insert Arizona QB here] looked terrific in the preseason" arguments.

What argument is being made here? The OP suggested that John Skelton might have an opportunity to compete for the starting job in next offseason. John Skelton has not been active that past 3 games while Richard Bartel has. It seems quite reasonable to point out Bartel's preseason play as a possible reason that Skelton has fallen to third on the depth chart in Arizona.

Kolb is obviously a HUGE mistake?

That's quite a call given he's made 5 starts in a completely new system. Its also quite a call given he's on pace to throw for 4,100 yards, 16 TDs and is completing nearly 60% of his passes. His YPA is a very respectable 7.45 as well.

I don't get to watch many Arizona games, and I'm sure it's not always pretty right now. I think the guy deserves a chance to learn the system and players a bit before writing him off however.

Skelton was drafted as a project and they have kept him around. Just thought that he might get a shot going into year three.

I agree it's not a mistake yet. He'll get this year as a free pass to be adequate and he'd better show signs of improvement and/or greatness next year.

Whiz and Graves have basically hitched their jobs to Kolb's success IMO.

One thing that annoys me about his play is how he scrambles to his right, almost like a bootleg every single time there's a hint of pressure. Of course, I'm not seeing what he's seeing, but it seems the dude needs to stand in the pocket just a little more and slide around a la Brady/Ben rather than reach for the eject button at the first sign of trouble.

ETA: Levi Brown is a turnstile.

So do people think he will improve, or just think he'll be given the chance to literally run this team into the ground? His play has deteriorated since game 1.QB rating: 130.0, 92.5, 69.6, 67.9, 46.9Put another way, what reason is there to think this trend reverses? We don't have a big sample size and what he have isn't promising.

Right now the main excuse they're running with is that he didn't get a full camp with the team.

DING DING DINGNo QB outside a HOFer like Warner could do anything behind this OLine. They are decent run blockers but couldn't stop my grandpa from putting pressure on the QB.

It was a mistake when they signed him, it's a mistake now and it'll still be a mistake 2 years from now when the Cardinals finally get around to admitting it.

This is how bad teams stay bad - they give up the farm for bad players.

I do agree with the OP that Skelton's a guy worth watching in the long run. But he was a pretty marginal prospect from a small school so even if he pans out it's likely to take four or five years (c.f. Ryan Fitzpatrick).

Tue, Nov 15

Coach Ken Whisenhunt was non-committal when asked about the possibility of Skelton remaining the Cards' starter even when Kevin Kolb returns from his turf toe injury. "I'm just going to enjoy this," Whisenhunt said of the win over the Eagles, "and worry about that later," the team's official site reports.

Recommendation: Skelton passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns to go along with two almost-costly interceptions in Sunday's surprising win in Philadelphia. Interestingly enough, both Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Roberts have improved with Skelton under center: Fitz posted his best numbers in a month, while Roberts had back-to-back solid games. It's also worth noting that Roberts' breakout games in 2010 came with Skelton as the signal caller. Keep an eye on this situation; the rumblings of a quarterback controversy are starting to be felt in the desert.

Well, the absolutely inconceivable didn't take long to become conceivable.
