QB Skylar Thompson, MIA (1 Viewer)

I was surprised the Dolphins sat Tyreek and Waddle after Tua got hurt last week. Thought that was a good chance for Thompson to get some reps with them. I would say to avoid injury except for the fact they kept Achane in the game

Can’t imagine he’s getting more than a couple starts before they roll with Huntley. Lucky for me I can enjoy him in my starting lineup for those couple starts in my SF league all I have to do is click accept offer and part with Malik Nabers and Brian Robinson to acquire Skylar. What an opportunity!

Really?

All-22 from Buffalo, many of the issues are dropped balls, nobody open, you can see that Thompson does a lot of good things as well.
He was a rookie that season, 7th Rd pick and i don't know how much Huntley tape you have seen but he doesn't look anything like Skylar IMHO
Why anyone would think a practice squad QB is going to walk into Miami Dolphins HQ and take over the starting job from a QB that was hand selected by McDaniel in the 7th round so they didn't have to compete with other teams for an UDFA...just saying he has a special relationship already with McDaniel, doubt Huntley is going to develop that in a couple weeks

Skylar's mom passed away from a battle with cancer when he was just 6 yrs old...
Somebody said he was tough as nails a few posts back, I agree.
Win, lose or draw, I think Thompson by far gives Miami the absolute best chance to succeed going forward this season

I don't think Huntley is any better, and ST has been in the system for almost three years now. I don't see anyone besides ST starting for Miami unless he stinks it up like Young.

ST is a past Waldman fav, too. The fact that he beat out White is telling. I'm rooting for him to succeed. Imagine if ST goes out and tears it up. He's got the coaching and weapons to do so.

I scooped up Huntley in my one SF league he was available.

Skylar sounds like a great guy, but I’ve seen him play football. Huntley was a smart pickup off the Raven’s PS.

Hey, maybe Thompson will surprise us - someone in one of my leagues bid $382/500 on him. 😬

Miami needed somebody to back ST up. Huntley was QB3 In CLE and on the practice squad for a reason.

I don't want to hype this guy but many down here remember him fighting hard vs Buffalo in the Playoff game from the '22 season in Orchard Park i might add.
-Why folks judged him late 3rdQ down 31-10 vs the Bills on TNF after Tua had another vicious concussion is anyone's guess.

He's had a full 8-9-10 days by Sunday since that TNF Horror Show, he will get ALL the reps and snaps in practice
I reserve judgement until we see him play over the next several weeks, he's in no danger of Ty Huntley taking over
Miami is going to roll with Thompson and I think even if he throws a couple interceptions that he is likely to toss 250/2TDs in McDaniel's offense.

I drafted Tua in almost all my redraft leagues, many times as the back up because he sat around so long in the Drafts, value seemed good
It hasn't been that difficult getting guys like Baker, Carr and even Purdy has been put on the waiver wire in some of my redrafts so QB is one of the easier spots to fill it seems

I don't think he will be an instant pick up on redraft but he is worth keeping tabs on. If he does come out hot on Sunday, you know folks will be running to the WW
What makes you think he will toss 250 and 2 TDs?

He’s tossed one NFL TD in 105 attempts.

“In his two-year NFL career, Thompson has started in just three games. In 2023, he wasn’t even on an NFL roster. During those games, he had one against the Bills where he went 18/45 for 220 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. In one of the other two games, he threw for 166 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. In the third game, he went 20/31 for 152 yards 0 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Needless to say, it’s not been great. Despite an elite passing attack with Tyreek Hilland Jaylen Waddle.”

And Cleveland still kept DTR over him. He was the 4th QB and odd man out. They tried to trade him briefly but couldn't before cutting him.

Yes - the reason that they paid Watson the GDP of a developing nation, making their depth chart entirely irrelevant.

In 8 starts with the Ravens he put up decent numbers. 67% & 65% completion %, made some plays with his legs. In 4 games in 2021 he threw for 1080 3:4, adding ~300 yards and 2 scores on 47 rushes.

And he wasn’t throwing to anyone resembling Hill/Waddle then either.

Thompson has a career 57% completion percentage with 1 TD 3 & picks.

Seems like a nice enough fella. Stats say Huntley is a better QB.

Thirty other teams could've picked Huntley up. Didn't Cleveland try to trade him, too?

We know that Huntly is a backup QB (third stringer). We don't know as much about Thompson. Your stats mean little to me due to the sample size. The odds are against Thompson. I'll be rooting for him!

We know Huntley has been a backup. it’s a little weird to put him in a box saying that’s what he is when he’s played in the NFL at a fairly high level.

I’m also a little weary of labeling a player just because of how the Cleveland Browns used him. They’re not exactly the high water mark of football knowledge.

I’m certainly not rooting against Thompson. I’m just not at all confident that this is a Cinderella story. Don’t be shocked if he goes out and turns into a pumpkin.

He's a seventh-round pick who has been in the league for three years. He's already won, and performing at a high level on the national stage would be the icing on the cake.

He was a Miami Dolphin in 2023, that's incorrect
He was drafted in the 7th in '22 and most Miami fans were miffed that Mike White was signed in '23 but Tua had just ended '22 with his 2nd or 3rd concussion
Tua was not even cleared for football activities until well after the Super Bowl, maybe March '23?
Many Miami fans have also watched Thompson in 3 preseasons now, usually catches the eye of most Miami fans

We'll see what happens over the next several weeks, the production will speak for itself
Nobody is saying or feeling he's a better QB than Tua, far from it
But he understands the offense as well or better than any healthy QB on the roster or practice squad.

We can agree to disagree, I'm usually pretty sour about Miami since I've suffered with them for a long time now, just feel like Thompson has shown more than we've seen with other no name journeymen that have graced the doors at Dolphins' HQ

Thanks for correcting me on that. Just pulled directly from that article.

I also got a little sidetracked thinking you were stating he’d be throwing 250 and 2 tds in his first game. When after rereading it you seem to think he can grow into that role.

You are closer to the team than I, and I you may very well be right.

His downside IMHO is his inability to get rid of the ball quicker.
When i watch that All-22 from the Buffalo game, seems obvious that guys are covered a lot, not many wide open receivers
It's going to fall on Hill and Waddle, they have to get open and not just half a step.
Can you think of a better tandem at WR to step in as a back up and throw the ball to?
Seattle is 2-0, they had to go to Overtime to beat the Patriots last weekend, I don't think of Seattle as world beaters so it will be interesting to see how he responds on the road

-Sidenote, MoP has been very honest about ride and die with Skylar, I don't care if they lose the next 15 games and pick 1st overall next season
Not likely to happen but even worse than this Offense is Miami's defense right now, especially on the ground
Thompson won't have the ball much if Miami can't improve on their run defense.
I think these 2 teams are pretty much same level with a few differences.

If Miami were to pull off the upset in Seattle, you could make an argument it's a whole new season vs the end of the season which is how many felt last Thursday Night
They've had extra time to get this team ready to play, if Mike McDaniel is the HC that so many in the media claim he is then Miami should at least be competitive

But in theory I want them to lose and start getting in on the Cam Ward sweepstakes, not everyone knows about him just yet but he is going to emerge as one of the top QBs taken in the Draft next year and he happens to play for my Alma Mater and I'd be elated if Miami were lucky enough to bring him here.

In the meantime though, I'm happy to watch Skylar Thompson and hope he is the Brock Purdy for the Miami Dolphins
SF-MIA, Shanahan-McDaniel, Purdy-Thompson both 7th Rd QBs
San Fran East as I like to refer to the Dolphins right now

Adam Beasley
The Dolphins now have run 59 drives with Skylar Thompson as their QB since 2022.

They have scored five touchdowns on those 59 drives.

Omar Kelly
Skylar Thompson forced to throw it away after going right even though every aspect of the play is to the left.

Skylar is not processing fast enough. This isn't good.

We love to judge QBs on small sample sizes. Which isn't to say Skylar looked good (he didn't) but the OL and playcalling was abysmal yesterday.
