QB Trey Lance, LAC (4 Viewers)

This is the one rookie QB I am interested in for redraft, and it’s bc he’s the one whose coach/OC best knows how to unlock him.

Agreed also because of his rushing upside, a la Hurts last year, in case he struggles in the passing game. Just obviously need to have other good QB options if he doesn't see the field for a bit.

Right, draft as your backup (start 1 leagues), I should have been more explicit.

I own him in 1 dynasty start up. Choo-choo!

in redraft, my plan would be to take Trey as my 1st QB drafted (7th/8th round-ish?) and then take a "boring" vet like Tannehill, Stafford, etc a little later to start the season.

Love Staff as a cheap pairing for next two years.

It's fairly exciting to read about how well Lance is doing. I don't own him anywhere, bummer.

it is ALREADY interesting to watch SF offense, once they add Lance, that offense is going to be must-watch TV for any O-coordinator in the country.

Struggled today in more "live action" drive(s).  Couple of fumbles and inaccurate.  Totally to be expected with his extremely short experience in-game even in college.  But good reason to temper expectations just a bit.

Yes, probably a good thing he struggled to keep him humbled.

I like Shanahan , but didn't also he think he could unlock Jimmy G? It's a fair question about Shanahan, but is he the QB whisperer that many are implying here?

Lance is struggling as any rookie QB would. SF bye is is week 6, maybe he's starting after the bye?

I think that's a fair point - because his body of work is so small, a lot of the expectation about Lance being great has to do with the Shanahan system, the surrounding weapons, and his incredible athletic ability. While Jimmy G's athleticism can't hold a candle to Lance's, Shanahan hasn't exactly turned Jimmy into a top notch QB (granted, injuries haven't helped).

In these parts, Lance may be more valued here from a fantasy standpoint because of the rushing upside he brings. Then again, you can probably say the same thing about Fields, even if he's not being put in nearly as good a situation to succeed as Lance is.

Shanny creates layups all over the field for his players. It’s not about being a QB whisperer, but just a simple comparison of the rookie QB situations.

Jones/Wilson - the talent evaluation is debatable, the offensive talent around them is not. There a couple shiny flecks that might be gold but those are trash bag offenses.

Lawrence - good weapons around him. I don’t trust the HC. S/b a really good QB down the road but tbh none of us knows.

Fields - aw, the worst of both world. lousy offense and HC about to be (deservedly) fired. Love Fields long term, just thinking redraft here.

Lance - like the player, on a good offense, one of the top offensive minds in the game for his HC. Just from a SRS view, this one probably works out the best for redraft in ‘21.

Related: Lance is +750 for OROY on FanDuel, 4th behind Lawrence, Fields, and Wilson. Seems like pretty nice odds if one thinks he is #goodatfootball, has the best situation, and is likely to start pretty early (like I do).

For this into that sort of thing.

Kid is raw. Fumbled exchanges with RBs and the blurb today is that he was messing up with clock management related drills and scenarios. I have very high expectations but he really is very raw. No reason those things can't be taught up and coached, though. Situational football is so important. So are 300 clean handoffs to Sermon. Ha.

I still expect Lance to eventually start sooner rather than later, but can't see it happening in week 1 with so much to get acclimated to in the pro game.

Paywalled
Sorry, I saw the blurb in it's entirety earlier and now I can't find it. I'm not a sub there either. I'll try to find it but the basic gist was like two plays where the clock would have screwed them. Like a pass to someone at like the 5 where they got tackled short of the end zone and the clock would have expired. And some other small example I forget. He is repping and he will improve. Better to make those mistakes now.

He looked how I think he is going to play.  He will take some bad sacks, make some awful throws but will also make some spectacular plays.  Question is how that all balances out

He didn’t make any awful throws. This is the 2nd time you’ve said this & it is patently false.

He also didn’t make poor decisions, as you asserted in the 49ers topic.

He looked poised & made several good reads & good decisions. Case in point the 80 yard TD. That was his 2nd check down on what should have been an 11 yard pass to the 1st option on a crossing route.

I can’t tell if this is a schtick or what, but it’s not beneficial to the topic or subject.

Pretty crazy how effortless his deep ball looks. He looks like he's about to flick it 15 yards downfield and it's a 50 yards bomb.

Eh, here's every play from the game. There's a lot of good there, but I disagree that he "didn't make any awful throws" or "poor decisions."  There's two throws there that should have been INTs into coverage, but were dropped by the defenders. He also had some inaccurate throws too, but overall it was a pretty good showing for a rookie who basically didn't play last year at all. His stats would have been even better if not for a few drops by his own receivers as well. Very bright future for this kid, but there's some moderate caution flags with the poor accuracy on a couple throws. That was something we saw from him in college, too, but his form is great and he's got a cannon, so it'll probably turn out fine.

That was my take-away.

The most impressive pass might have been the Richie James sideline drop. Threw it on the run, evading pressure, perfect touch pass where only James could get it if he wasn’t Richie James.

that woulda been a 1st down, drive continues.

Really mature level of play. JimmyG simply doesn’t have the club in his bag.

Context matters. Those were under duress when the offense around him was downgraded later in the game.

With the starting offense buying more time & receivers running better routes, I doubt those throws happen.

I thought it was a mistake to leave him out with the 2s and 3s that long.

I mean sure, but objectively they were bad throws. I've got him in a bunch of leagues so I really like the kid, but there's definitely some cleanup and mastery that needs to happen. Barring some huge meltdown (which I don't foresee), I think they should start him right away rather than limit their offense around Jimmy G's much more limited game -- but I'm not the one running an NFL team.

I agree with that statement. Adding context is important in evaluating though.

No doubt he has room to grow. I’m not saying he’s Elway right now. He’s a rookie & an inexperienced one at that.

but the tools are clearly there, and I see no reason why he couldn’t have a solid season if he gets to play with the entire starting offense. He’s reportedly a quick study. I envy that you’ve got him in leagues - I would have loved to have acquired him in my dynasty league.

Just got him last night at 2.4 in my rookie draft.   Planned to take him at 2.7 but started to worry he would go beforehand….and had 3 guys I liked still waiting for me at 2.7 anyway.

Took him at 2.02 about a month ago, and that was after taking Lawrence with the 1.11(!) My other QBs are DWatson & S Darnold so I was in a pickle.

Had another draft last week and grabbed Lance at 2.03.

Part of me hopes they don't rush him so when he's ready, he's really ready. The other part is screaming let 'er rip.

So, what you're saying is ignore this post...?

:P
Nah - in SF he was already a top six pick. But he definitely went a couple of pics higher than I thought he would.

i’m not complaining… I ended up trading up to eight because Pitts was sitting there. Got way too quarterback crazy.

Do you have to fill every thread with your nonsense? Dude almost threw two interceptions, in fact the dbs had their hands on the ball on two different occasions, yet you say "it's patently false he didn't make any bad decisions or bad throws".

Look, I like Lance and think he'll be good. But why do you have to continue with this outrageousness all day long @Hot Sauce Guy?
