Question About Internet Connection Speed & Verizon FIOS (1 Viewer)

SIDA!

I have the option of signing up for Verizon FIOS and have a question about their internet service. Maybe it is a dumb question so forgive me.

Is 50mb connection on Verizon FIOS the same as 50mb on a regular cable connection?

Yes, but with Fios you'll actually get that speed.

Yes, and 50 is faster than you will likely ever need at home. That should stream things without buffering and download HD movies in about half an hour.

Running 3.84mb here at work. :lmao:

Ran 14.2mb last night at home with Optimum while a pal of mine- in a totally different neighborhood- was getting 18mb with FIOS.

Check here.

Edited to add that I believe both claim 2015mb. FIOS pal is obviously paying for more...

The speed test registered 44.21 Mbps download speed for me. We are paying for 50 Mbps. I am going to check it a few times throughout the day to see what happens.

I am assuming that 44.21 is decent performance based on our plan? Will I actually get close to 50 Mbps with a fiber connection?

We have a 50 Mbps plan with Time Warner and I still have bouts of connectivity issues or slow page loads. I am on a wifi network and don't know much about this stuff so I am assuming that it could be due to a variety of factors...not just my internet plan with them.

But I am under the impression that having fiber will eliminate some of the issues I have with peak usage by my neighbors in my complex impacting my performance. Or am I misunderstanding all of this works?

If you are on a 50mbs circuit then issues with page loads shouldn't be happening. Our business is on a 40 and that's enough to power a server with about 80 concurrent users outside as well as 8 phone lines, a dozen wireless devices and 10 workstations with very little hang up.

What are you using for a wireless access point? Any chance the circuit is split among everyone in the complex or building? If it's slower at night (when all your neighbors are steaming Netflix and porn) compared to the middle of the day then that's a pretty good indicator that you are sharing bandwidth somehow.

Just ran the test from the link that Glock posted earlier and my speed was 36.62 Mbps at 10:40 at night.
