Help! I'm drowning in spam!! (1 Viewer)

I made a bad mistake and now it's haunting me! I answered an unknown number from a local exchange which turned out to be spam so I hung up quickly. That opened the flood gates and now I receive a couple dozen calls a day from these jokers and it is driving me up the wall! I am using the Verizon spam blocker and have reported my number the fed registry, I block and report every new number that pops up but still it persists. Going on 3 weeks now and I effing hate this! The calls are from multiple different area codes so no rhyme or reason that I can decipher. Any one got any tips, tricks, recommendations for me??

I do 3 things -
#1 - Subscribe to Nomorobo. It works to block auto-dailers. As far as I can tell, it works quite well.
#2 - Keep doing what you're doing - block every spam call you get on your phone. I just use the iPhone blocked number feature.
#3 - If it gets really bad, I just don't answer calls not in my contact list. My Voicemail indicates as such, and instructs people to leave a message and I'll call them back.

Thought about it but easier said than done, had the # for 15 years so it's what all my contacts know.

Thanks for the rec, obviously you trust this app but how long have you used it and did you install it as a preventative or after you got spammed?

I usually wait and talk to them. After a couple minutes I ask them:

what company they are calling from?

do you have a number or extension I can call if we get disconnected because i'm really interested.

I then tell them thank you. I am going to report your company to my state's attorney general since you are about the 5th spam call I've had today. It will work.

I don't know if this actually helps or hinders, but, if I get a call from a number that is not in my contacts, I answer and immediately put it on mute. Like clockwork, either 15, 30, 45, 60 seconds it will hangup. Then I block that number from calling again. I got tired of all the VMs that were robo's or nothing at all for several minutes. IF it is someone that I need to hear from and they call back, it automatically goes into VM.

This is why I don't give my number out to just about ANYONE. The list of people that have my number is very short: Family, friends, doctor, mechanic...MAYBE some others.

Facebook doesn't have it. Neither does google. Same for Amazon, Yahoo, and every franchise in existence.

I walked into Papa Johns the other day to order a pizza and wanted to pay in cash. They said they could not complete the transaction until I provided a phone number. Ridiculous! I gave them 555-1212.

Is this fullproof? No. Some get thru, sure. However, I get about 1 every 2 months.

For me the calls aren't the issue. I silence unknown callers and fortunately I only get maybe 3-4 "spam" voicemails a week.

My issue, especially lately, has been the spam texts. 99% of them are political, and 99% of them are from "one side of the aisle". I won't divulge which one... but i inherited my dad's phone number and he apparently signed up for a bunch of stuff using this number and so now they inundate me. The "stop = end" thing doesn't do anything but confirm to them that they have a legit number and that you're actually reading the text. I hope they die down after Election Day because it's driving me effing crazy.

Probably used it for 4-5 years. Started after I started getting spam calls on my home land-line. It works on cell and landline. I think it's free for cell, but pay for land-line. I should in fairness turn it off for a little bit and see if it is currently making a noticeable difference.
