I've searched the internet a bit but can't seem to find an answer. Who ran the defense in the stint of LeBeau's absence? Also, what scheme did they run at that time? Did they stick with the 3-4 or did they use any 4-3?
Here's an awesome link for (almost always) accurate historical depth charts. You can also use Doug Drinen's Pro Football Reference website for some historical data.
The Steelers have been predominantly a 3-4 front since the days of the Steel Curtain in the 1970s. I think there may have been some transitional years in the 1980s, but they ran a 3-4 throughout the 1990s.

Thanks, I was waiting for you to reply. My question was based on the possibility of Cowher coming to Houston and if he had any experience with the 4-3, which would probably be preferred given the Texans' personnel. But, that now seems moot given McNair's comments on Kubiak's job status.

When Cowher was the defensive coordinator in Kansas City, he ran predominantly a 3-4 if I recall. I think it's reasonable to expect him to look for a 3-4 coordinator wherever he lands, but it's not a certainty.
