Question for League Commissioners (1 Viewer)

Suggestions greatly appreciated. (Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but there isn't really a place for commish questions)

Our 4 year 3-player keeper redraft league is running into some troubling issues around trading picks and tanking. In order to keep the out of playoff teams interested in the league, we implemented a rule that teams could trade future picks for good players in order to make runs at playoffs. Again, this rule was in place to keep owners interested once their teams have no shot at playoffs.

The issue we are having is playoff bound teams are giving up 1st and 2nd round picks (redraft - top players get put back in pool and are not kept) for players that are typically drafted in the first two rounds. For example, one team gave up a 1st round pick for Jordy and Jimmy and a 2nd round pick for Lamar and Marshall. This team is now stacked. In order to compete, other teams have begun giving up picks or are basically required if they want to try and compete. They have essentially used the loophole in the rule to stack their teams.

I have mentioned resetting the league (only picks or picks/players) and this have not gone over well with the owners of the teams that have received picks. If we add a rule next season, it will only magnify the disparity among those with extra picks in the first few rounds.

My view is a league that requires you to give up on this season or the next season to try and win a championship takes away the entertainment that comes with fantasy football.

Has anyone had issues with tanking in the past? What was done about it? My feeling is this league is headed for implosion if it continues as is and no one seems to care about it.

Stop using the word "loophole" and stop accusing people of tanking. These owners are doing EXACTLY what the rule was designed to do.

You're coming off like a crybaby and a hypocrite, to be honest.

charge $20 per loss all season long, it builds the pot like crazy..we do.its awesome..keeps guys interested till the very end. or, set up a draft lottery involving all non-playoff teams.

make the trade deadline much earlier, as the NFL does..make it like 2nd week of October, if not earlier.

but at the end of the day unless you have a rule against tanking dont complain when teams tank.you have a right to do as you wish with your team.you dont owe anyone anything, i.e., especially 'trying' in games when the season is lost.youre vying for a playoff spot, theyre vying for a high(er) draft spot next season.

Why are you surprised by this? When you allow draft pick trading, this is what happens. Guys are going to go for it while others are going to play for next year. It's their decisions as owners. If you change the rules this year, you should expect to lose multiple owners. If I gave up on my season to get picks next year, I'd definitely not return if those picks were taken away.

One constructive solution: reverse order of standing picks for the teams that don't make the playoffs. This gives teams an incentive to win games near the end of the season. We're doing this for the first time in the league I commish.

In a 10 team league with 4 teams in the playoffs:

1st pick: 5th place

2nd pick: 6th place

3rd pick: 7th place

4th pick: 8th place

5th pick: 9th place

6th pick: 10th place

7th pick: 4th place (last place in playoffs)

8th pick: 3rd place

9th pick: 2nd place

10th pick: 1st place

I don't understand how this rule would have incentivized anything else -

OK, it's week 11 and I am 2-9. I'll a) trade away my 2015 first round pick for Peyton Manning so I can go 4-9 or b) trade away every startable player I have and stock up on 2015 first round picks. It's going to be A 100% of the time.

Institute a toilet bowl for non-playoff teams for next year, with the next year's pick order on the line.

My keep 4 league, your earliest picks are required to keep players. So to keep 1 player costs your 1st round pick. To keep 2 players costs your 1st and 2nd round picks, etc. Any team who doesn't keep a player with a pick uses it to select a player.

We've never had the kind of problem you do. The good teams have players they will want to keep, there is no way a wise owner would give up a 1st round pick for some extra player for a title run. Doing so would cost them the following season all of the players that made them a contender in the first place.

An earlier trade deadline might help you too.

I definitely agree with the earlier trade deadline. I'm intrigued if this will happen in my league in the future as this was the first year we could trade future draft picks in our keep three league. We moved up the trade deadline one week this year, because of the draft pick trading.

I know this is apples and oranges, but in my fantasy basketball league, we have two trade deadlines: one for draft picks at midseason, then a later trade deadline just for players. That is another idea you could try.
