This comment/question is based on the Santana, Haren, Blanton, Bedard, Cabrerra and all other rumors.
I understand the you never want to overpay, or give up too much of your future for any player. But looking at the Santana deal in particular, you would be getting an all-star pitcher in his prime. Yanks and Sox both say that their young pitchers (joba & bucholz) are untouchable, but IMO they are HOPING that either of these guys will ever amount to what Santana is right now. You never want to give up too much, but the Sox could probably include Buch and leave out Ellsbury and the Yanks could probably make a easier deal also. The same could be said for the trading for Miguel C. by either the Dodgers and the Angels. Both of those teams have alot of potentially good prospects, but they will be hoping that they could become what Cabrerra already is, a STAR.
Am I way off base here, in thinking that you trade potential for proven players. With that in mind, you will notice that I only used younger players, because this changes when the "proven" player is older and on the downside of their career.
Opinions??????
