Question for the board? (1 Viewer)

This comment/question is based on the Santana, Haren, Blanton, Bedard, Cabrerra and all other rumors.

I understand the you never want to overpay, or give up too much of your future for any player. But looking at the Santana deal in particular, you would be getting an all-star pitcher in his prime. Yanks and Sox both say that their young pitchers (joba & bucholz) are untouchable, but IMO they are HOPING that either of these guys will ever amount to what Santana is right now. You never want to give up too much, but the Sox could probably include Buch and leave out Ellsbury and the Yanks could probably make a easier deal also. The same could be said for the trading for Miguel C. by either the Dodgers and the Angels. Both of those teams have alot of potentially good prospects, but they will be hoping that they could become what Cabrerra already is, a STAR.

Am I way off base here, in thinking that you trade potential for proven players. With that in mind, you will notice that I only used younger players, because this changes when the "proven" player is older and on the downside of their career.

Opinions??????

I read a story about Cabrerra and the Dodgers that said that the Dodgers were hesitant to include 3B prospect Andy Laroche and thought the very same thing that you bring up in your post. I mean for the love of Pete, if they want Andy Laroche included in the Miguel Cabrerra deal, friggin do it! I think what's going on here is nothing more than high-stakes poker. If you were the Sox or Yanks and you could get Santanna without losing one of your "can't miss" prospects wouldn't you try as hard and as long as possible to do so?

I think most teams are banking on paying the big dollars to free agents. Thus, keeping their prospects allows them to afford these free agents. When you have to give up the top tier of your farm, and also pay big bucks....well, that is the problem most teams have.

In the case of the Red Sox/Yankees/Mets/Dodgers/Angels, they can afford it a little more, but you can see the problem some of them have with their albatross contracts....but they are manageable. Imagine if the Yankees had given up a Hughes + and then had to sign Clemens/Giambi, etc. Same with the Sox. They have been trying to unload Manny and his 20 million every year...fortunately they can stomach that, but imagine if they had traded a Buchholz/Ellsbury type in order to then have the privelege of paying him his contract.

There is that fine line of not giving up too much, but yet giving up enough so you acquire the guy and have exclusive rights to sign him so he never gets to free agency...where he would be scooped up by the Sox, or motre likely the Yankees.

It depends where they are in the building process. BOS and NYY are in line to contend now. Not only that, but they are competing against eachother in the standings as well as in FA/trades.

I would be pissed if BAL made a deal trading away prospects for a big name right now. They need to rebuild and are not going to contend for quite some time.
