Got the two shots in the arms and said they hurt like hell. Plus a shot in the hand where it looked like there could have been a mark from the bat. She said it hurt real bad but is ok. Her hand is pretty swollen though. She’s 15 (well 16 today actually) but a big baby so she was freaking out. She’s an idiot for touching it but if anyone has followed the teenager support thread they know that I’m basically the first responsible parental figure she’s pretty much ever had.Update?Waiting at ER now, thanks again everyone
The real problem now is because her family is a disaster, they let her state health insurance lapse and she’s uninsured so god knows how much this is going to cost. And they probably will want me to pay for it because it was me who wanted to take her. They thought it was no big deal.

Same birthday as.... me.
Hope it all works out! What a story...
AmenOur system is so dumb. Insane I can’t ask how much it will cost and even get an estimate. Have to wait weeks later to see what price the magic oracle came up with.LmaoMy wife's hospital just billed someone $49,000 for rabies shots.

I don’t really care if anyone pays, just letting people know one reason rabies immunization is so expensive. They are probably never seeing that money. As you can imagine a family that lets their kid not have health insurance for 6 months out of general incompetence and laziness doesn’t have the money to pay a pricey hospital bill.I don’t know how much the other shots cost, but the one they injected into the wound is a monoclonal antibody, and those tend to be extremely pricey. No absolutely not and they had to call her guardian to get her verbal consent for ER services. Legally no way I am bound to pay. That’s absolutely an insane price. If it’s like $1500-3000or something whatever I’ll pay. But obviously I’m not paying a bill like that.Hopefully you did not sign anything saying you would pay. It's $3000. Just PayPal me the money and I'll handle it for you.No absolutely not and they had to call her guardian to get her verbal consent for ER services. Legally no way I am bound to pay. Why did it have to be that way? It’s 5 shots, in the muscle, not stomach.Good luck to the kid. I'm sure those urban legends we heard when we kids aren't true that you have to get 100 shots in the stomach.
The struggle now will be following up: did the clinic call her aunt to schedule the next shot for TH. Is anyone taking her? Or will they just be like let’s save money and just assume the first round took care of it. I assume it will be me taking her.
It is indeed. Thanks- she’s a lot of work but she’s just a good kid who deserved way more than she got. Yesterday was her 16th birthday and she said ever since she was 5 years old she’s had the same birthday wish: for her dad to come back (he’s basically just been in and out of jail and rehab her whole life). She said now she needs a new birthday wish because hers has basically come true. The struggle now will be following up: did the clinic call her aunt to schedule the next shot for TH. Is anyone taking her? Or will they just be like let’s save money and just assume the first round took care of it. I assume it will be me taking her.
Sorry if I missed it but I assume this is the same young lady you’ve been helping for a while now?
You’re a good dude - kudos to you for making a difference in her life and possibly saving it in this instance.
The original vaccine, developed in the 1800s required 100+ shots, but less potent versions of the vaccine available in our lifetime only needed ~30 shots. I’m guessing they injected into the muscle of the stomach simply because it’s a bigger target, but intramuscular administration in the deltoid is more reliable. Why did it have to be that way? It’s 5 shots, in the muscle, not stomach.Good luck to the kid. And that's why nurses should rule the world. So Thursday she needed the next follow-up shot. The ER told us the lab would call her contacts to schedule an appt for the shot. Wed night I asked her aunt if she heard from the clinic, she said no. So I tell the 16 yeat old to be awake by 10 AM and we will just go. When we get there, the nurses say they called her aunt and grandma several times and tried to leave messages (both mailboxes were full). She was already really feeling some **** knowing I was the only person who seemed to care that she not die. While we waited to get in, she mentioned how disappointed she was that her aunt didn't even get her a cake for her 16th bday (the day prior). The 2 nurses who did the shots were the 2 most awesome women, best experiene I've ever had at a hospital. They quickly picked up on why "a family friend" took her there and her actual family didn't answer their calls. We even talked about her BMI and out of nowhere they put together a gift bag for her with yogurt, ensure drinks, protein bars. I still can not believe it. It is weird to say, but I am excited to take her back next Monday for another shot.
Really appreciate the thought. My wife and are going to surprise her with a funfetti cake with candles (her other complaint was they never even bother to get her candles for her bday cakes) when she comes over next week. And that's why nurses should rule the world. So Thursday she needed the next follow-up shot. And can we buy your friend some cupcakes or something? Not that you can tell her why, but it would still nice.
You are a good dude, ilov80s. Amazing selfless things you are doing to help this girl, and to help her experience some compassion and normalcy. It’s been so much work for sure but also so easy too because she’s like the nicest kid ever and she truly has become my little best friend. We talk everyday. I really wish my wife and I could adopt her now. At worst, when she turns 18, I am pretty sure she will ask me to adopt her. She texted me earlier today:You are a good dude, ilov80s. Kudos to you and your wife. She sounds like a great kid and given all that she has been through, she should be jaded and bitter. It doesn't sound like she is. And the loving and caring you show to her will just make her flourish. It’s been so much work for sure but also so easy too because she’s like the nicest kid ever and she truly has become my little best friend. my mom gave me my baby book there’s like literally no pictures in it buttt as our life goes on we could add to it it def wont be a baby book but it could just be a me book idk lol
I mean like how freaking cute is that. My wife and I are already looking at Polaroid cameras.
I’m very lucky too that my wife has just jumped right in and been totally cool with it. She would have been well within her rights to say this was all too weird or too risky or something and put her foot down. She’s been supportive the whole way and done everything she can to help support us. The kid is super sweet but her tough upbringing certainly didn’t leave her unscarred. When we first really met she was 14, cutting, drinking 7 days a week including in the mornings, taking random pills and she was being abused. I didn’t quite know all that at the time, it came out slowly as she began to trust me. She still has issues and she’s going to feel the impact of that extensive trauma throughout her life but she’s in such a better place now. I just hope it wasn’t all too late and she can stay on a good path as she goes from teen to adult over the next few years. There’s definitely still a big part of her that wants to disassociate from the world through drugs and alcohol.Kudos to you and your wife. Amazing she can be that way after all she's been through and then there are kids that have had nothing but the best and they're little jerks.
