Rabies Question featuring a strange bat (1 Viewer)

So a kid was in the woods this afternoon and found a bat just laying on a log in the sunlight. Why the kid disturbed it, I do not know but the bat tried to bit her and then calmed down and she pet it before it flew away. She said she doesn't think the bat bit or scratched her. To me it sounds like the bat was acting weird and there was physical contact so the kid should probably get a rabies shot. Anyone have more knowledge of this than me?

Daytime bat has rabies for sure.....

I would seriously consider getting rabies shots

ETA: I shouldn't say for sure - but most likely especially if it was acting "odd"

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. It is almost always fatal. The most common form of transmission is through direct contact with the saliva of a rabid animal. This can occur through skin broken by bite or a scratch, or secondhand contact with infected saliva via the mucous membranes in the victim’s eyes, nose or mouth.

Because bats have tiny teeth and claws, you can be scratched or bitten and not feel or see the point of entry. That makes it important to take close encounters with these flying mammals very seriously. Your brother did the right thing each step of the way. He captured the bat without contact and took it to his local health authorities for testing. And while it may seem an extreme precaution, he was wise to agree to the series of injections that are used in cases of rabies exposure

ok my instinct was that because it’s fatal, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t overreacting

I don't have experience personally with this but if it was my kid I would at minimum monitor extremely closely/take her to doctor....

There's nothing to monitor, once the first symptom appears, it's too late. Given it can spread without a bite, just from aspirated saliva from the animal, way better safe than sorry here.

I wasn't 100% if that was the case as in if you get a symptom you can get a shot. 100% agree

This. Get to doctor immediately

Within 24 hours is strongly recommended, but in any event get the shots asap.

Yeah, they like to give that first injection on day 0

Walgreens or CVS may have a PEP shot available - I know they do preventative. Or as mentioned the Emergency Room

Yes, 💯 get seen.

You can go to a local ED and they can manage this. If you have a local Children's hospital, you can also reach out to their ID department (infectious diseases) and they can facilitate but it's getting late, so ER may be the only option.

Agree with the others saying get treatment today.

I'm not sure about your community but where I am we have to send kids to the ER to receive rabies immune globulin and rabies vaccines.

Good luck to the kid. I'm sure those urban legends we heard when we kids aren't true that you have to get 100 shots in the stomach.

And it can take months to years for symptoms to develop.

Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is unpleasant, but absolutely indicated here.

I’ve had preexposure and post exposure and a booster in the past 22 years. Worst thing was the sore shoulder that he next day.

Just make sure to get all of the shots and don’t stop before the last.

FWIW- there's lots of different bats. I don't know that one sitting on a log in the day time is automatically weird. We once encountered a bat while hiking. We were in a section where we had to do a little scrambling and one of us put his hand down within inches of a bat that was attached to a boulder. The coloring of the bat kinda blended in with the rock and that's why he didn't notice it at first.
Kid needs to learn not to pet wild animals.
That being said. Any bats I've encountered in my house end up dead. Creepy little ****ers.

Waiting at ER now, thanks again everyone
Update?
Got the two shots in the arms and said they hurt like hell. Plus a shot in the hand where it looked like there could have been a mark from the bat. She said it hurt real bad but is ok. Her hand is pretty swollen though. She’s 15 (well 16 today actually) but a big baby so she was freaking out. She’s an idiot for touching it but if anyone has followed the teenager support thread they know that I’m basically the first responsible parental figure she’s pretty much ever had.

The real problem now is because her family is a disaster, they let her state health insurance lapse and she’s uninsured so god knows how much this is going to cost. And they probably will want me to pay for it because it was me who wanted to take her. They thought it was no big deal.

If they try to bill you, maybe you can talk to a social worker there. I think most hospitals have charity programs that will pay for the bill if the parents cannot pay it. The parents do have to prove they can't pay for it. You did the right thing bringing her in.

Hopefully you did not sign anything saying you would pay. My wife's hospital just billed someone $49,000 for rabies shots.

No absolutely not and they had to call her guardian to get her verbal consent for ER services. Legally no way I am bound to pay. That’s absolutely an insane price. If it’s like $1500-3000or something whatever I’ll pay. But obviously I’m not paying a bill like that.

I don’t know how much the other shots cost, but the one they injected into the wound is a monoclonal antibody, and those tend to be extremely pricey.

They are probably never seeing that money. As you can imagine a family that lets their kid not have health insurance for 6 months out of general incompetence and laziness doesn’t have the money to pay a pricey hospital bill.

Some Googling says 3k-7k on average with as low as 300 or as high 10k. Not sure if that also factors in the 3 follow up injections.

The low end is for the vaccine I believe, not the post exposure stuff. I know this because we travelled to Belize a few months ago and the rabies vaccine was recommended. Our provider suggested we call our insurance to make sure it is covered because each shot (3 shot series) was $600 a piece. I called, got the "yep, it's covered" only to then see three separate $1800 bills for the shots (wife already had hers, so it was 5400 or so for me and my 2 kids). After some battles, they relented and ended up covering it because of "incorrect info given to us over the phone". Apparently it wasn't supposed to covered under our plan
