"Racist" Halloween Costumes Cause For Expulsion? (1 Viewer)

I think the pendulum has swung to far to the left on matters like the above.  Watching my local news and a bunch of kids from expensive, private high schools are in trouble because they wore prison jumpsuits to a private Halloween party and one of them had Freddy Grey written on the back.  The picks showed up on social media naturally.  The dude with Freddy Grey on his back apparently goes to the College of Charleston and the head of the black student union called for him to be expelled.  The university said it is investigating.

The university is investigating?  What are they investigating, the fact that one of their students made a stupid choice at a private function?  At what point is enough enough?  Why not let social media ridicule the kid and just move on?  Why do institutions have to get involved in issues that they were not a part of at all and that no one would connect with them other than peripherally.  I think we've gotten so uptight and so politically correct these days that real issues are getting buried beneath all the constant noise.

How about we make huge issues out of the huge issues and let the small ones get sorted out by those involved.  That way we can save our outrage for actions worth being outraged over.

Why shouldn't the College of Charleston be able to hold their students to some sort of moral/honor code if they so choose?

Are you going to start expelling students who get traffic tickets, DUI's, etc. They are breaking the law so they should be expelled.

Ahhh, more poor babies offended by stupid sh@@. Better run to mommy and get some comfort. The people in this country are a joke. Why don't all of these whiny babies move to another country. They do know I hope they don't have to stay here.

Maybe we should focus on the adults that think it would be funny to mock a person killed by the police. That costume is horrendous.

Does this include the people calling for the firing of players who kneel quietly during the national anthem?

Yeah. Let's start with you

Who's Freddy Grey?
Black male arrested for possessing an illegal switchblade, died from spinal chord injuries in the police van. Ruled a homicide by the coroner. You know, just a really funny Halloween costume.

Should the school choose this tack, they may have to demonstrate that ( a ) this moral/honor code was actually codified and distributed to students, and that ( b ) the student's costume was an unequivocal violation of the letter of what code existed.

...

The student wearing the costume ... he was definitely trying to get a rise out of people, right? His closest cohort probably thought it was humorous. But people out and about in public -- another story altogether.

I want to be a bothersexual - one who gets their rocks off on the daily outrage, more ridiculous the better - for Halloween. What should i wear?

If the school has a code of conduct that students are suppose to uphold then the school should have the right to take action.  If not then the students can wear what they want for the most part.  If you don't want your students doing specific things then make sure they know what's acceptable and what's not.  Seems simple enough.

We live in very Hyper Times.  And that goes across the board.

Brutal times to start a career as an insult comic.

I have a question about "black face". It seems that it's frowned upon in ALL circumstances but what if a white person just wants to portray a black character in a respectful manner?

I remember a couple years back when Julianne Hough got backlash for dressing as "Crazy Eyes". She ended up apologizing but I don't know....it didn't seem to be mean spirited or racist in any way.

Thoughts?

Timshowicjie?

Not that I'm defending the university here, as I think we live in outrageously PC times, but the university has the right to uphold its public image. If they felt this shines a poor light on the university, that's entirely within their right to expel the kid.

Unfortunately this is just another thing individuals have to take into account with social media and constant cameras around these days, nothing stays within an enclosed social circle anymore.

What is racist about the costume?
nothing...that term is used way too broadly and has really lost its meaning.

I got into a discussion w/someone at work about it. I made a joke with a Chinese accent and someone called it "Racist" When in reality, it wasn't racist but instead stereotypical. But they could not see the difference.

Apparently wearing a Moana costume is racist also.
My daughter is going as Moana tonight.  I hope my community has enough common sense not to bring it up.  Dumbest thing I've heard this week and I hang out in the Politics sub-forum.

They investigate it because the student "represents" the College.

Uh oh. You're THAT guy.

Same.

I tried to have the conversation with my 4 year old about her white privilege and cultural appropriation and she wants to dress like Moana. Can you believe it?? :alsonotreally:

would they have worn this costume with them of "s breaking out of prison" if this were a diverse school or did they only do it because it was a white private school?

other white kid had the full N word written on his body with swastikas.

The question you have to ask is do you want to teach a lesson or let these kids just carry on which begs the other question.  If these are your kids would you tolerate it and do you want them to be more like Greg Popovich or RBM?

Yeah honestly anyone who wears a costume like that is a piece of ####.  They deserve whatever happens to them.

did not know that...All I saw was the kid in the prison jump suit w the guys name on it. That obv changes the conversation.

That said, and not defending, but the kids IN the picture were in prison suits that you can buy at any costume store. The caption written by the person taking the photo is the slur. Are the 2 connected? Was there anything else ON the costume of these 2 that was derogatory? Just saying its a slippery slope with SM and the context. Again, I don't know anything about the school, community or otherwise. But I know a lot of white snot nosed teens who use the N word as part of their regular vocabulary. As ignorant and racist as it sounds, they have no problem pulling it out in general conversation within their groups.

As for the kid with the Freddy Gray, costume, again its stupid and in ####ty taste. But it is focused on one person, not a whole race. I'm sure there was some bonehead who wore a Jon Bonnet Ramsey costume the year she was killed, and that doesn't speak to all blonde haired white girls any more then this...its just an idiot trying to capitalize on a news story for halloween.

I honestly can't see what is the 3rd photo. some chubby kid with marker on him.

and in either case, i'd slap my kid stupid(er) if that was him.

The Gray costume isn't about being racist so much as outing yourself as a POS. Also let's not compare social feelings about blonde haired women and black men.

That is dumb and nothing at all like the Freddie Gray costume. I hope nobody bothers you or your daughter- if anything imo it's an honor and a sign of progress that a white kid wants to do fully embrace another culture.

I didn't compare "social feelings"

I pointed out that there are #######s who will use a news tragedy to make for an "iconic" (in their ####ty eyes) halloween costume. It doesn't make it "racist" though.
