Belichick denies tampering accusation by Davis

By HOWARD ULMAN, AP Sports Writer

Oct 1, 6:00 pm EDT

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Patriots coach Bill Belichick denied Wednesday the claim by Raiders owner Al Davis that New England had a workout with Randy Moss before obtaining him in a trade with Oakland.

Davis said Tuesday that the Patriots had tampered with Moss before the deal in April 2007 that brought the wide receiver to the Patriots for a fourth-round choice that year on the weekend of the NFL draft.

“I’ve told the story about Randy many, many times,” Belichick said in a conference call with members of the media covering the 49ers, “and the first time I ever talked to Randy was the Sunday morning of the second day of the draft last year.

“So that’s the first time I met him. That’s the first time I talked to him. There was no workout. There was no other contact with him.”

Davis made the tampering accusation after ending a news conference in which he announced the firing of coach Lane Kiffin.

Asked Wednesday if he had a response to Davis, Moss said, “No, not at all.”

Belichick sidestepped the question when asked by New England reporters, saying he was concentrating on Sunday’s game at San Francisco.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday, “No tampering charges have ever been filed with our office with respect to Randy Moss.”

Moss, disgruntled for most of his two seasons with the Raiders, set an NFL single-season record with 23 touchdown receptions in his first season with New England.

Davis said other teams didn’t want Moss before the Patriots obtained him.

“You know how many teams turned him down?” Davis said. “That guy in Green Bay thought he couldn’t run any more. Even Denver, where they’ll take anybody, turned him down.”

He did not identify the person in Green Bay.

Davis said former Raiders senior personnel executive Michael Lombardi, who was fired 10 days after the Moss trade, spoke to Belichick about Moss.

“What’s his name knew he could run, he’s a friend of Belichick’s. Mike Lombardi,” Davis said Tuesday. “Mike sold what’s his name, Belichick, on the idea that he could run. They tampered with him. I remember (Patriots owner) Bob Kraft saying that he had to look him in the eye and all that. They went down and worked him out, he could run. He’s their team, of course, with the quarterback.”

Moss had 98 catches during the regular season last year, 22 in the first three games. With Brady out for the season after hurting his knee in the opener, Moss has 12 catches in three games.

Lets see... the Patriots ask permission to talk to him, based partly on some 3rd party information that Randy could still run, and Davis granted permission to talk to him, then takes the only deal they were offered for Moss.

How exactly is any of this tampering?

Davis is a joke.

:lmao:As further evidenced by this, from Davis' own mouth:

Your own personnel guy is talking to the Patriots, and the Patriots are "tampering"? Al, who's tampering with your grip on reality?

Because Davis "knows" things. Like he "knew" that Monte Kiffin wanted to join the Raiders, even though Kiffin never actually said so. But Davis was able to read between the lines and decipher all the hidden messages.

It's not easy being a Raiders fan this year. I still think we could so easily be 3-1. Instead, we're 1-3 and have an owner that needs to be taken away in a rubber truck.

"An 80-year old"? So you agree that the fact of Davis' age is more significant here than the fact that he's still THE person pulling the strings in Oakland? This attempt at a defense of Davis would make Lionel Hutz shudder.

a) He's either too frail of mind to run the team and thus shouldn't be - which is what his critics are pointing out with these threads, or b) He's still keen enough in his mind to take his lumps like anyone else for his boneheaded moves and statements - which is what his critics are pointing out in these threads.Don't play the age card. When he's gibbering to himself at home or at the park, he'll get a pass and sympathy from everyone here, I promise you. But as long as he's climbing into the ring, he's got to take his shots like everyone else.

Eh??? Did you see that press conference? Even if every last word he said is true, a person of sound mind doesn't air his dirty laundry in public like that, with some laughable PowerPoint presentation. You fired the guy. Be the bigger man and move on. But he felt the need to publicly explain the fact he fired him for "cause" so he could save a few bucks. This is not the act of a rational person. It's just too easy to attack the guy for how he looks and the things he does. We get it. He's well on his way to full-on dementia. It gets old.

People make fun of those who have difficulty relating to regular society. See, for example, Raider fans ridiculing Belichick. How old was Al when he chose not to pay Shanahan? Was he demented at that time? It's just your turn in the barrel. Quit making excuses.

The press conference convinced me of two fundamental things:1) Al Davis is still very much the same guy who has wielded autocratic power with the Raiders, and he's not lost a thing mentally. To wit, it was a not-so-subtle attempt at building the Raider organization's defense against the sure-to-be-filed Kiffin lawsuit seeking the rest of his contractual salary. And,2) Al Davis' still suffers from the same character flaws that he always has, namely the inability to delegate power and allow subordinates to appear more relevant to Raiders success than he is; the inability to accept any significant responsibility for failure rather than push it off on someone else; the unwillingness to honor contracts or even judgments against his organization; the inability to realize that his evaluation and management of players and coaches is at least two decades into a steady decline and well past where it needs to be for the Raiders to operate well. We're not picking on Grandpa Simpson here, we're criticizing the latest underhanded antics of Monty Burns. I'm sorry that he's your team's owner, and I mean that. You deserve better.

It's been at least 24 hours since Skeletor has had some crazy juice and been allowed to speak to the public.A'll about the CRAAAZZEEEEEE TRAIN!

 I do think he's nuts, but in a sort of sane way. He's very conniving (and cheap). If you check wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Davis as I did, you'll see that he's been that way for years. He's declining for sure now, but he knows what he's doing.

Not many people can make the great majority of non-Patriots fans take Bill Belichick's side on anything. Al Davis is one of those people. To call him an embarrassment at this point would be an insult to those who simply are embarrassments.

Give me a break. When all the comedians on the board wisecrack about Al needing Depends... or when they say Al drools... or when they call him the Crypt Keeper, is that ALL a reference to how he has "difficulty relating to society?" Or is it simply a cheap shot at an old man's appearance?

A far better question is, "Would they be making those wisecracks if Al Davis wasn't responsible for the dysfunction in a high profile NFL organization?" I don't recall people slamming, for example, Lamar Hunt in his final days of running the Chiefs, and he was only 3 years younger than Al Davis is now when he died two years ago.

In other words, try again. Al's earned this ridicule.
