Raiders to make run at Michael Vick (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
The Raiders are preparing to make a run at Michael Vick, according to NFL sources. The Raiders package would include receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter plus the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 draft for Vick and the Falcons first round pick (10th overall).
LINKLet me break this down: The #1 pick and our trash in exchange for Vick and their #1.

Not saying its completely out of the question, but there would be almost $35 mil in dead money combined for those two teams in 2007-2008.

Not sure why Blank, who has said he doesnt want someone of Moss' character before (and presumably that would extend to Jerry Porter also) would want to make this deal.

If this werent from SI, Id think it got made up on a message board somewhere, as it doesnt really make any sense.

Interesting concept. It would appear (on the surface) that this would be close to "cap neutral" (though I could be off based on some numbers I have seen for a Vick cap hit). I may turn out to be in the minority, but I think this could be a win/win. They could go with Schaub (and based on a "Petrino offense", that's probably good) get an upgrade at receiver (talent, not attitude per se) and have more options in the draft. The Raiders get their QB and would be at the right spot to take make a pick for their O-line.

What are the new rules with cap hits? You can spread them out over 2 years?

Seems like if a deal like this was EVER going to happen, this would be the year for it. It will be the second year ina row the cap gets bumped up, and a lot of teams are going to have a lot of room under the new cap. Maybe they can take the cap hits and actually make this work.

I don't think this can happen before the draft. I might be wrong, but I think Atlanta would take a HUGE cap hit if they trade him before I think its June 1.

If I'm the Falcons, I take this deal and run like a madman. The Raiders must completely be disillusioned with the choices at 1.01 this year.

Its ~$22mil in 2007 before June 1, or ~$7mil in 2007 and $15mil in 2008, I believe.Blank would have to be REALLY mad at Vick and REALLY want him gone to deal him before 2008.

Schaub to Moss, with Porter, Jenkins, Crumpler, Dunn, Norwood & White?Doubt it will happen with Blank's previously stated position on Randy, but Atlants could have a potent offense if the deal were made.

This will be 6 pages long by midnight.

Lets play along

What would ATL then draft at the #1 slot?

Or would they trade down?

I guess Oak at #10 could go Ginn or Jarrett?

SI's Truth and Rumors page is just a compilation of stuff from other sources. They cite foxsports.com on this one. And when the term 'according to NFL sources' is used, it could mean just about anybody with a pulse.

Vick wouldn't agree to it otherwise. How can you perpetuate a myth without built-in excuses? The last thing Vick wants is quality receivers.

Curry is a better receiver than Porter, as he was showing the year they started together prior to his injury. As for Moss, as unmotivated as he had become, almost anyone would be better than he was showing this year. So if this trade did happen, with Moss and Porter gone Curry becomes a #20-25 fantasy WR IMO.

So what happened here? Al Davis heard the news about Vick and his water bottle and thought he'd be a perfect fit for the Raiders?

...and as a Moss owner I'd be very happy with this deal. Schaub to Mossi a dome on a fast playing field? :fishing:

Won't happen, for all the hype about schaub the fact is vick has a better career completion percentage, a better TD - INT ratio, and more importantly schaub has never won a game he started while vick has won around 60% of his games. The raiders' might have had a chance if blank had given up on vick last week because of the water bottle incident, but now it's known by the NFL that whatever vick was hiding wasn't marijuana.

so you actually think Atlanta would be getting screwed here

Right, because the cure for laziness and a bad attitude is a QB with 161 career pass attempts, a roof on the stadium, and some carpet.

Absolutely not, Atlanta would be fools to pass on that trade. I mean they could have the chance to start a qb with a winning percentage of zero, they would have to pay $8 mil a year to a wr who hasn't had more than 1,005 yards since 2003, and on top of all that the falcons would get the raiders' third best wr. What's not to love about that deal?

If they were looking for someone to throw the ball they certainly would be better off looking elsewhere.

Why is everyone saying that Schaub would be the QB? They could draft Russel (my preference) or Quinn. They could trade the number one pick for more picks, and/or they could trade Moss after they get him. If this trade is on the table Atlanta should take it, it gives them so many options, they can basically redo their offense without taking a step back. Moss is a pos, I agree, but I still think this is a great trade for Atlanta.

Even if it is Schaub, they ought to draft another QB just to protect themselves.

JaMarcus Russel would fit in very nicely in that offense methinks.

The cure for laziness and bad attitude is putting Moss in a situation where he is happy and motivated to play well again.Maybe..

It never ceases to amaze me how overrated Matt Schaub is on this forum. He has a limited sample size, in which he has been terrible, and he has never won a game. IMO the Falcons will be worse if they trade Vick and plan to go with Schaub, regardless of who they take at 1.1.

I'm not familiar with Petrino's offense. Is he the type of coach who will adapt to his players? If so, now is a poor time to trade Vick... he should only get better with decent coaching... and how could the receivers not improve? If Petrino is another guy who will try to make Vick fit an offense that doesn't suit his abilities, however, that might be a reason to trade him. But frankly that would make me question the hire.

Completely agree with the Schaub love. Reminds me a lot of Billy Volek after his '04 season. I never understood that either. Keep in mind that ATL may be in love with somebody at 1.1. If that was Russel or Quinn they still may not be looking at Schaub as a savior but more as a stop-gap until Russel or Quinn were ready to take over the team. If you were a huge fan of Russel or Quinn and weren't convinced Vick would ever be more than a good FF QB then I'm not so sure the salary cap hit would dissuade you from making the trade. If you are investing a ton of $ into one of them it's doubtful Russel/Quinn has you in the SB hunt in the next two years anyway... VY like heroics aside. Maybe they don't want to just replace the HC but rebuild the chemistry on the team from the top down. A lot depends on just how "upset" Blank is about Vicks off the field actions. His statements off the field certainly hasn't painted him in the best light as a leader even without his receint troubles.

Ashley LeLie must be just thrilled with that rumor. :tinfoilhat:

If the rumor is to be believed, then the Raiders initiated the talks, so it would seem they are more in love with Vick than ATL is with Quinn or whoever. Some problems with this rumor:1. If Vick is gonna get traded, next offseason makes a ton, a ton more sense. The numbers are out there if anyone cares to look them up.2. They have Shaub for another season, assuming nothing out of the ordinary happens. No rush to move Vick this offseason.3. Vick's just greatly increased his chances of being entered into the league's drug program, and he's gonna get moved for the #1 pick? Okaaaay......4. Even without paying for his prorated base salary, Vick's base salaries down the road exeed 12 mill, IIRC. That's a pretty big investment on a guy with serious questions.5. Any rumor with such detail makes me wonder. It's January 23, and we already have three players and two draft picks named? You know what a true rumor sounds like? "Sources say the Raiders have quietly inquired about Mike Vick."It wouldn't surprise me if this rumor came right from Ben Maller's rear end. Funny, when you click on the story on his web page, it just brings you to Mike Vick's player page.

And why would the Falcons want Moss and Porter included in the deal when they could draft the best WR prospect to come out in years (and the opposite of a prima donna) with the #1 pick...?

:banned: So if this happens, then the Vick apologists can blame not only the lack of WRs but also the lack of an OL for Vick's inability to pass the ball?

And if it is true that Vick's been limited due to crappy WRs in Atlanta, why would the Falcons not try and get a WR to help him (Jarrett in draft?) than get rid of him?
