Raiders trade 4th for M. Williams and J. McCown (1 Viewer)

Nice ROI, Millen.

Honestly, 4 first round WRs in 5 years. You cut one and just traded the other for a 4th. There is a reason they are always picking in the top 10

You don't pass on the best player in the draft because you've drafted poorly. They did the right thing. Now the trade for a 4th round pick seems a little ridiculous...

what do you think Mike Williams is worth?
Exactly. Williams & McCown were going to be waived. Detroit did well in turning them into a 4th round pick while also clearing their salaries. LOL when the ESPN heads were discussing how well Williams had played towards the end of the year.

The good news is Mike Williams will have a fine upstanding citizen in Randy Moss to mentor him.

I agree in theory, but what does CJ really add? He'll be replacing a nearly 100 catch/1100 yard WR on the 7th ranked pass offense. Throwing the ball is pretty much the only thing the Lions did well. Thomas would have helped reduce the 63 sacks, or anyone to help the 28th D. If the Lions turned down an opportunity to trade down and acquire more picks to draft their only position of strength, then it dosn't matter how good CJ is, it was a terrible move.

If they got anything for Mike Williams thats an awesome job by Millen.
My point was that they used what a #10 pick on the guy and are now selling him two years later for 10 cents on the dollar. That's not a great job. A great job would be drafting a pro bowler at #10. And its even dumber to give up on him after two years for next to nothing. We all know lots of WRs take a few years to get it. Cutting your losses so quickly for only a 4th is a bad move IMO.

If I was a Lions fan, I'd prefer to keep McCown than draft Stanton in the 2nd round considering all of their needs. They definitely needed to get rid of all the negatives surrounding BMW, though.

Well, to me, McCown meant nothing. Williams? Eh, good riddance. Was a completely wasted pick. He's fat. He's lazy. Maybe he works out for the Raiders, but I'm glad he's gone from Detroit...

 People act like BMW has some value left. The pick is wasted, it's gone regardless. Better to get something back than have a fat, lazy player riding your bench. Good move by Millen.

Rogers and Harrington were wasted picks. But I have an uneasy feeling that BMW will be getting the last laugh on Millen. The fat, lazy, empty uniform tag might go away if this guy could actually get some playing time. They never let him play in Detroit. BMW was in the doghouse for all but two games last year. Sure maybe he deserved it, but I would like to see him actually be allowed to play in a complete game before ruling him a bust.

BMW seems to have some upside again!Okay maybe his money is running out, he'll need to get a new contract soon. Back in socal. Back with his coach. Back where he was a decent WR. If he actually wants another NFL contract he'll get his butt in gear. It's the best case for him, and if he has any shot at starting in the NFL, this is it. In a dynasty league he's a decent 25th-30th round flier. I'd take him as my 12th WR.

Good day for Oakland yesterday.

I like McCown and think he can do very well until Russell is ready to go. Denny Green knows a thing or two about QB's and he thought very highly of McCown. I know, things didn't work out for McCown there, but come on, that line was absolutely horrid and Arizona had no running game whatsoever.

Yes, I know everyone is going to argue that Oakland's line isn't any better, but I think the O-line is going to be very much improved this year. I love the new coaching staff and the way they are changing up the blocking schemes to play into the strengths of Gallery. I love the combo of Rhodes and Jordan.

In short, Oakland plays hard for a new and well liked coach and with a chip on their shoulders. Everyone looks past Oakland when they play them this year and Oakland is going to be a surprise. I stand by my prediction in another thread that Oakland goes 10-6 this year!

Yipee!

I wouldn't get too hung up on Mike Williams. It was an absolute steal for the Raiders to acquire both McCown and Williams for a 4th round pick that they picked up by sliding down a few slots in the 2nd round.

In other words, we got a vet QB which will give us insurance and added competition and a 1st round Top 10 talent (Williams) for a pick we didn't have at the beginning of the draft.

Yes I know Williams has been a bust ... so far. However there is ZERO risk in acquiring him. If he does well in camp, great. If not, he is cut. Where's the downside? Williams was AWESOME in college and was picked in the 1st round because of his talent & abilites that to date have been unrealized. Kiffin was his position coach at USC so you got to think that if anyone can get through to him, it would be Kiff.

I was very pleased with our draft day moves. I agree with RT that Higgins was a head scratcher. I would have liked for us to take DT Thomas or a OL prospect. The last thing we needed was another developmental WR prospect.

Needed a franchise QB. Check

Needed a complete TE. Check

Needed a pass rushing DE. Check

Needed a Vet QB. Check

Needed OT depth/comp. Check

Overall a very good haul. DE Q.Moses in particular was an awesome choice. He is a very impressive prospect. Henderson is a very good athlete (basketball background) with good agility and footwork which is well suited to zone blocking.

Agree. Teams that have good defenses in place with a struggling offense are usually the ones that surprise the next year. If Russell and co. can put anything together on offense, they'll be 8-8 or better. (That's what I love about this league.... :goodposting: )Williams is definitely an intriguing gamble in deeper leagues. With Moss gone, and looking for a new contract, a new start could be exactly what he needs. There are a lot of times around this league where people just needed a change of scenery for one reason or another - put it behind you, and get back to playing football.

WILLIAMS' RESURRECTION: Kiffin recruited Williams to USC and has known him since he was a junior in high school. He hopes to be able to bring an end to the struggles he has had as a Lion.

"He was a little heavier than what I was used to, but not much," Kiffin said. "His weight can go up and down. I know the kid very well. In the Rose Bowl when we played Michigan, he played at 242 pounds. Nobody knows that ... and he played extremely well. He is less than that now."

Kiffin said the Raiders planned to try to swing a deal for Williams even if they had to do it separately. Williams has 37 catches for 449 yards and two touchdowns in two years with the Lions.

EXTRA POINTS: Kiffin said second-round pick Zach Miller is expected to be used as a full-time tight end instead of the end-by-committee arrangement that has prevailed recently. The coach said Miller was Oakland's top-rated tight end in the entire draft because of his versatility ... According to a source, the Raiders have informed TE Courtney Anderson, a starter the last two years, that he is on the trading block and free to seek another team.

I agree with this and hope BMW can turn it around in Oakland. But from the Lion's point of view, he was done. For whatever reason, Marinelli and Martz turned the page on him. He was never going to get out of the Detroit doghouse, so it's best for the Lions to recoup whatever value they can. A fourth round pick isn't great, but it's more than we got back for Charles Rogers.

All I know is... if BMW doesn't succeed with Kiffin as coach then he'll never succeed in the NFL.

He's setup to get the best chance to maximize his abilities with his college coach running the Raiders ship, a nice young QB to develop chemistry with, and Moss gone.

He's one of those canidates for dynasty teams that you could take a flier on for cheap and worth the risk.
