Ok, longtime player/fan here..........and I DO understand the rule that if a baseball game gets rained out during the 1st 4.5 to 5 innings, the stats are completely wiped clean and the teams must "start-over" from the beginning.
My question:
When in baseball history did this practice start?
WHY did they feel the need to completely start over? (I have a theory, but will wait on answers)
and more importantly, to create some discussion on this topic:
In this day and age with Doppler Radar, etc.........Do YOU think they should re-visit this rule and possibly change it?
Also, I was trying to figure out what other major sports do when a "rainout" occurs in the middle of a contest and compare it to MLB:
Football - ?
Basketball and Hockey - N/A
Golf - Weather Horn goes off......I do know you can A) Mark your ball and resume play tomorrow or B) Elect to finish out the hole you're on if you want to
Soccer - (Ok, I know it's not a major sport....but would like to know)
Tennis - ?
(and finally, no.......I'm not a Yankee fan in any way, shape, or form)
