Rams sign WR Steve Smith (1 Viewer)

Filed under "could be great if he's healthy" along with Danario. I like the signing, since it should be cheap and could help significantly.

Don't the rams already have their slot receiver in amendola?
A healthy Steve Smith is infinitely more valuable than Danny Amendola. Signing Smith to a one-year "prove it" deal is very smart, IMHO. Much more than what some of these teams have done guaranteeing crazy money to the likes of middling receivers.

I don't have much more hope for him than any of the other guys in the mix there. Understandably, Smith was just a year removed from his injury last year, but he showed virtually nothing in a pass-friendly offense last year, and with a greater opportunity when Maclin was hurt.

I think it may be case where he has little left and just depth material.

This is a guy who is only 27 and had over 100 catches one year, but signing just a one year deal after most impact WRs are off the board says NFL teams are still pretty skeptical. Therefore I would be too. Last year NYG said he wasn't ready (microfracture surgery), PHI said oh he's ready and will contribute... and they were wrong.

Now I have three roster spots taken up for the slot guy in St. Louis and I don't even have Amendola... Yeah, nobody cares...

I think he will surprise. I'm not seeing WR1 numbers, but I think he could easily hit 75/850/6, as long as Amendola or Salas doesn't emerge.

Jeff Fisher is the head coach everyone...are we really trying to figure out the slot receiver in the Rams' offense? You'll be lucky if 1 guy can hit 1,000 yds on the roster. Bradford will be lucky to throw for 4,000 yds and 25 TD under Fisher if ever. I would not be shocked if St Louis took Richardson at 6 or Lamar Miller should he be there in round 2. I look for a big 1-2 punch at RB if not a bell cow to emerge and for the passing game to accompany the run not necessarily leading the way.

Before Fisher got saddled with Vince Young in 2006 the Titans passing offense was ranked 29th, 15th, 13th, 16th, 8th, 20th, 5th, 10th, and 9th in the NFL in total passing yards under Fisher. Young struggled as a passer early on and Fisher's other option was to turn to the ancient mediocre Kerry Collins - he had little choice but to play it conservatively during his last couple of years in Tennesee. As you can see from the prior years the Titans had some years where they moved the ball effectively through the air. If Bradford proves capable I'd expect the Rams to not be a one dimensional team. Shottenheimer clashed with Ryam mostly because he wanted to pass too much while Ryan preferred the "ground and pound" and Fischer hired Shotty Jr. anyway.

Lloyd's pro-rated stats with the Rams were 74/993/7 in a terrible year for Bradford and IMO if they take Blackmon he should be able to pick up those numbers. Kendricks looked horrible but he's still a very talented guy and Jeff Fisher loves TE's. I'm not expecting Bradford to get 4000 yards this year but the 3500 he had his rookie year isn't unreasonable. The team isn't nearly as bad as they looked last year and they will be adding a lot of talent early in the draft #33, #39 and #64).

Meh. Surprised if he made the roster. The name and his game have worn off.

The familiarity Amendola/Clayton/Salas have with Bradford (and that all 3 are slot guys like Smith), he's fighting a very uphill battle. He's only got a couple months to prove he's got something left. If he wanted a 1-year "prove it" deal, he should have took a min contract to go back to the QB he's got a ton of chemistry with.

Rams need another outside WR.

Who are you guys projecting at 4 and 5?
Are we really having this conversation....its not fantasy football. RB's just don't go that high in the NFL draft, there is no need anymore.
The Browns are at 4. There RB situation is a disaster. The RBs currently on their roster have 8 starts in their career...combined. They could very easily grab Richardson at 4. TB is next up at 5. Blount struggled for the Bucs last season - both with injury and poor performance (especially in the latter part of the year.) The Bucs tendered him for only $540,000 for 2012 (i.e. that are not on the hook for much at all). They also could easily snag Richardson if he falls to them at 5. I, for one, think Trent will be off the board by the time the Rams picks at 6. There is no way both the Browns and Bucs (who both need a good RB) pass on a prospect like Richardson.

Spiller, McFadden, Peterson, Bush, Brown, Benson and Williams have all went top 10 recently. RB's still big contracts so clearly they have value. If RB is a need and the team thinks he's elite then RB's will still get drafted early.

(Rotoworld) According to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, WR Steve Smith was signed after an "extraordinary" workout with the team. Analysis: Fisher feels that Smith can get back to where he was in 2009 when he caught 107 balls for 1,220 yards and 7 touchdowns. After suffering a knee injury that required microfracture surgery in 2010, Smith was not the same player with the Eagles in 2011. Considering the Rams underwhelming wide receiver situation, the 26-year-old possession receiver has a chance to play every down if he is, in fact, back to 100% health.

Smith is an excellent route runner and if he becomes the safety blanket for Bradford as he had been for Eli when he was starting this would be huge news in fantasy circles.

Smiths health remains to be seen but maybe Fisher envisions a role something like Derrick Mason for him. Smith has proven himself capable but some never rebound from that type of injury.

Curious how Spags feels about this, signing a Giant WR after he's gone yet he was available last summer.

Well, sure looks like Smith is slotted into a starting spot this year. Based on the rest of the WR's on the roster it looks like they're going to be banking heavily on Quick transitioning quickly because there are a ton of slot WR's on this roster now.

Guessing these guys want nothing to do with the WR's the old regime left for them, Amendola's in and let the rest battle for the #5 and #6 spots if they want to keep an extra one for special teams purposes.
