Rams WR thread (1 Viewer)

Not sure why so many on this board thinks he hasn't earned his spot in the starting lineup.
People refuse to see him as legitimate. Might be because Gibson was not a high draft pick or some high profile college player. These kinds of players are often overlooked because they don't jive with the preconceived notion of what a team's WR1 should generally be. But there have been guys that took the same path as Gibson. Why can't he be the next Rod Smith or Keenan McCardell?
Great player comparison with Rod Smith as his upper potential. Smith was high on tenacity and guts with average talent and a great quarterback chucking him the rock - all similarties with Gibson's situation. Who knows if it will happen, but the opportunity is there.

Clayton was placed on the PUP already today. He can come off before the season starts, but is this an indication he will miss the first 6 games?
:link:Where did you see that he was placed on PUP?
it's preseason pup, not regular season pup.he can come off pre anytime, and he still counts against the roster on pre, but if they regular pup him they save a roster spot, so we should have more info by saturday, when they cut down to 53.they put him on pre (active) pup to leave their options open for regular (reserve) pup, or they've already decided he'll be on it.
what he said. The two OU guys had an instant connection and rapport. Several other WRs are injury concerns or fragile or whatever term fits. For a while. Clayton is somewhat ideal to have as insurance.

If he's playing (and the signing pretty much indicates he will be) Clayton becomes the late flier with the most upside. The rapport between him and bradford last year was undeniable. IIRC Clayton was a top 3 WR every week until he got hurt or close to it.

I do not think his knee is 100%, or the Rams would have signed him earlier. They let him walk, he tested free agency with his knee and he came back empty handed. I am pretty sure they signed him on the cheap and are willing to give Clayton another year to see if he can work back up to full speed. Taking the guy with the bum knee out of this WR competition is a waste of a roster spot. Looks like a perfect taxi squad dynasty play for one year.

This is where I am at. If he was going to be the Rams #1 guy, they sure didn't seem to be too worried about securing his services. He did have really nice numbers to start the year, I can't ignore the targets he had early on. However, I feel that his draft spot will be so low, why not do it. I think if the opportunity presents itself, I am going to try and grab Gibson and Clayton back-to-back late (Deep rosters--40+ spots).

Clayton: Seems like if things break right, he can be a Derrick Mason type. Has put up numbers with Bradford (very small sample size.)

Amendola: Going the highest of the Rams WRs, and most likely to underperform that spot. In PPR, if someone was to let me have him, I would take him, but he is being drafted as a starter. I think if Bradford improves as much as people expect, he won't need to dump off the ball to the poor man's Wes Welker as much. There's little chance of anything amazing happening after Amendola gets the ball, I think McDaniels would prefer it going down the field more. Amendola is traing wheels, and I think the training wheels come off for Bradford this year.

Sims-Walker: I assumed the perpetually overrated Sims-Walker would be drafted too high for my liking, but he went pretty late in the two drafts I have done, to the point where he might represent value, even if I don't believe in him. Always thought he was a guy that had the tools, but couldn't put it together. He was let go by a WR-desperate team, and that always makes me leery. But I feel like he is a known quantity for the most part, and #1 WR is not that quantity.

Donnie Avery: Another known quantity. I think he is just a guy, can have some nice games, but I don't see him being a guy the team actively tries to get involved.

Danario Alexander: Lottery ticket, and can't write him off yet, but I think he is broken. Sucks, but has had some serious leg problems that don't seem to be going away.

Brandon Gibson: Still a mystery, we don't quite know what he can do yet. But so far, he is starting. I mean, he is starting. Sounds good to me. Love his draft spot too, the price is right. His ADP is WR 80 or so. Starting WR for the Rams, with no obvious #1, is WR 80. Gonna go ahead and call that value. I am sure it is a lot higher in dynasty and keeper leagues, but is still in positions where people are taking backups.

I dont see the point of signing him and immediately putting him on the pre-season pup unless they also plan to pup him for the regular season. At this late date wouldn't you want to see just what he can do in practice if there was some chance of him playing early in the year?

Personally I don't think he ever sees the field if the guys who start the season do well. I know he had chemistry with Bradford last year but that doesn't men someone healthier cannot do the same this year.

What a pile of poo. Are there any #1 WRs available for trade?

I think the talented Bradford has average, at best, receivers to throw to. McDaniels' helped make Lloyd a stud WR last year. If you can get MSW in the 10+ round, I would seriously consider taking him.

They will run 15 plays or so with the starters in the 4th preseason game. I think those will be critical for the WR position

Considering they've got so many guys in the mix, I figure they'll have to be playing some/all of them throughout the game, right? I guess it'd be an indication that a guy has his role wrapped up if he doesn't play much.Considering all the craziness with these receivers, is Kendricks really the guy to have here?

Some news on Clayton:

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- The newest member of the St. Louis Rams, wide receiver Mark Clayton, didn't make the trip with the team to Jacksonville, and he may not play until October.

Clayton, coming off 2010 knee surgery, was placed on the physically unable to perform/active list after signing.

For the time being, that means Clayton counts against the 80-man roster. The Rams are expected to place Clayton on the PUP/reserve list by Saturday, when teams have to cut to the regular-season roster limit of 53 players. As a PUP/reserve player, Clayton won't count against the 53-man roster, but won't be eligible to play for a minimum of six weeks.

But Clayton wanted to sign, St. Louis is a good fit for him, and the Rams obviously are interested in having Clayton catch passes from Sam Bradford, even if that doesn't happen until October.
rumor is that it's between Pettis and Gilyard for the final spot.

"perpetually overrated Sims-Walker" - how many years was he overrated? One, last year?"let go by a WR-desperate team" - didn't MSW say he wasn't coming back period?

"couldn't put it together" - the guy played in Jax; since Jimmy Smith has anyone put it together in Jax?

Josh McDaniels who created the Orton/Lloyd run from 2010 is now OC; no Clayton, and who do you think they will be throwing to in the end zone (besides Kendricks)? MSW looks like a decent bet to me.

On 8/24 Rotoworld said he was 2-3 months from being ready. They quoted Owens as saying that no team has called him with interest. Has something changed since last week?

Players don't refuse to stay with a team purely because the team is not good or because they weren't making enough friends, no matter how much they publicly want to state this is the case. They do not return because they are not getting offered a big enough contract, or because their role on the team is being diminished... which leads to a smaller contract in the future. So if a team without two good WRs doesn't want him then yes it does say something. Sure, the team could be wrong, but it is still at least legitimate to say something is up when a guy can't even hold onto his job there.

I was told sign week 4, ready by midseason. Anyhow...the Rams aren't winning it all in 2011. This thread shows a slew of young players they want to groom. TO for a year doesn't fit for me.

Donnie Avery is this years Brandon Llyod. Rumour is that Gibson has turf toe.MSW = Gaffney & Amendola is Royal.
Can you give any details/insight why Avery is the best option there this year? He's suffered through some injuries and did look pretty good in the past. He seems like a darkhorse, but certainly a possibility to emerge there.

Per Rotowire:

Gibson is dealing with a sore toe, 590 The Fan's Howard Balzer reports.

Spin: There hasn't been any mention of the dreaded "turf toe," but this is something to watch. Gibson is primed for a significant role in what should be a pass-happy and fairly effective offense this year.

The point is, someone is going to emerge as a startable WR. Amendola and MSW should not be relied upon early while we see how the situation shakes out. If Gibson is healthy, he has a good a shot as any to be that person. Definately the type I like to take a late round flier on. Potential number one receivers plucked off the waiver wire or in the last round of the draft don't grow on trees.

Right now the only person looking like a good start week one is Kendricks. Amendola in PPR.

How did they not throw some cash at Braylon or Floyd? Braylon got nothing and the situation in S.F. is nothing close to St. Louis.
Because the Rams looked at Braylon and probably thought 'no thanks'.
Not exactly the best teammate but not R. Moss either. He'd immediately be their #1. You are a weak head coach if you can't make this work. Where you should earn your money.

I agree - he's the guy I'd want to own. He definitely showed "something" and generated some buzz in Jax, which is actually saying a lot. Yes, it didn't all come together, and he deserves some blame, but out of everyone there, he could be a FF monster with prolific qb, which he now has. Not saying run out and grab him at all costs, but if you need an even-upper in a dynasty trade, I think you could do a lot worse than MSW.

I agree about MSW. I traded for him in one league and I'm crossing my fingers he stays healthy. I still believe Kendricks will lead all Rams in receptions this year. Next year look for the Rams to draft one of Alshon Jeffery, Justin Blackmon, or Michael Floyd.

How did they not throw some cash at Braylon or Floyd? Braylon got nothing and the situation in S.F. is nothing close to St. Louis.
I think the question is "why did they not throw some cash at Braylon or Floyd".The answer is that they were happier keeping their current WR's than throwing money at those guys.Keep in mind that it wasn't only the Rams that turned their noses up at Edwards and Floyd. It may just be timing. They are actually getting pretty young, and Edwards and Floyd don't help that. Kinda like when GB cut ties with Favre when he still had another year left in the tank, sometimes it's better to take your growing pains this year so that next year you are a step closer to that Super Bowl. If you try to minimize the growing pains, you sometimes take longer to get where you want to be.

Because the Rams looked at Braylon and probably thought 'no thanks'.
Not exactly the best teammate but not R. Moss either. He'd immediately be their #1. You are a weak head coach if you can't make this work. Where you should earn your money.
I think it's time you go and apply for an NFL HC position. It's so easy a caveman could do it. :D

I think it's time you realize it's an extremely difficult job to attain but most are not geniuses or even that special. Haley and Singletary? Many of these guys aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

so Danario made the team? hmm...
Gilyard and Avery gone. Clayton to the PUP.That means MSW+Gibson+Amendola as the starting 3 with a gimpy Alexander and the two rooks as the depth. :excited: I really think this is shaping up well for Salas. There's really not a lot in front of him in terms of talent and health.

Yet there they are and here we are. :D
